Which handicap is there exactly, that women shouldn't be able to compete at the same level as men at video games?
Due to social pressures, it is likely that at present the mean skill of female players is above the mean skill of male players (female gamers face more pressure to not play war games, so ones that do are on average more dedicated to it), but that there are many more male players of pro-skill (larger populations tend to have higher peaks and lower troughs in skill). Gender-equalise the social pressures and the community size and there is no reason to expect women to play at a significantly different level to men. Think of the foreigner tournaments in BW. They usually had less-skilled players than Korean tournaments not because foreigners are inherently worse than Koreans, but because the culture surrounding competitive play gave Korean players of professional potential a more beneficial environment to train in - team houses helped players with potential find a supportive learning community, wider social acceptance increased number of players to pick from to join those houses,... Now, in Starcraft 2, many competitions that would have been run as foreigner tournaments with Korean participation neither expected nor desired a few years ago are open to anyone. Koreans still do very well in the scene, but there is a significant enough competitve scene outside of Korea that we are seeing a significant number of top-level players from the rest of the world competing. Hopefully, something similar will happen with female participation. If we're lucky it won't even have to wait for SC3. maybe females are just worse at gaming?

I'm pretty sure females are more than capable at competing on the same level as males but it's a simple fact that the SC2 gamer population is disproportionately male. This game isn't a sport where physicality divides the athletes - it's a computer game where time, dedication, and a certain amount of talent directly correlates to results. Some of you seriously believe that females are inferior to males at SC2, it's just laughable. If there were more females playing this game then I'm sure we'd see more of them on par with the guys. Take into consideration as well: does a girl really want to practice in a tiny house full of dudes?
Actually a female hasn't won a single notable or even online cup that males have been in. I'm not sexist, I'm a realistic. And it isn't "Wow shame on you guys", its more like "Yes you read numbers and observe tournament winners". Considering there have been thousands of these online cups, the "5%" females would have won one now.
Exception: Tossgirl at times.

Can't believe people are finding things to be negative and critical about in this news. You really think the $5,000 she got has some detrimental effect on the chances of aspiring male gamers? And don't tell me she's taking the spot on ST that some potentially great male progamer could take. ST would make room for great talent if they found it..and in any case they can do what they want with their team.

She's pretty good looking....Koreans are often good looking...I LOVE KOREANS. STUFF IT, I LOVE ASIANS. Asians <3

if my girlfriend had fingers fast enought to play so good starcraft 2 then i wouldnt use her for SCII. 0.0 Gz to her tho. lets see what she does

I am extremely happy for her, its good to see female sc2 pro players joining the scene. She should definitely be a more active player than SlayerSEve. Grats to her and StarTale!

they're gona share a room and rail all day all night.... in SC of course

This is what the community needs not a Gold wannabe joining SlayerS for promotion and her cute looks.

Awesome news, love to see Aphrodite in Startale team.
|
Cool news. Now lets see a SlayerS`Eve vs StarTale Aphrodite games, lol. Hope to see more girls getting picked up by other teams.
|
Lots of suprising comments I gotta say :S Lets just see how it turns out, Female gamers have an equal chance to male gamers, that is if they train hard like all the other male gamers... simple as that.
And I hope Eve and Aphrodite do well, and I believe they will be atleast decent or even better when they are both part of such good teams :D

This will be extremely interesting seeing how good she can get. On a side note, why are Starcraft 2 pros complete ballers when it comes to girlfriends?

Did anyone else notice that in that photo, Rainbow is using the pink keyboard, while she is using the black one? I would have expected it to be the other way around .
|
This is pretty cool. I'm really interested to see how she compares to the current Code A players. Best of luck to her. ^_^

Houston Astros cap ftw! International baby!!!

I'm not an extremist feminist or anything like that but am i the only one who finds it kind of weird that half of these comments are about that photo and how scary she looks on it? isn't that a bit weird? why not focus on her gameplay instead of her looks? please.
ont: grats, awesome to see more girls in the pro scene! i hope she'll become really good.

ont: grats, awesome to see more girls in the pro scene! i hope she'll become really good. Literally nobody would be talking about her at all if she weren't female. Can't have it both ways, I'm afraid.

Maybe people would still talk about here, if she was not korean but instead on a weaker server.

Because yeah, StarTale, those scrubs, who cares who joins them. Now of course whether she would have gotten the invite had she been a male is something we could question, but come on TL. "tournaments for just girls are bad", "omg she must have just gotten picked up by a male dominated team because she's a girl".. what do you want? ><
Grats to her and I hope she does well. E-sports has been growing like crazy over the last year, there's really no reason why the opposite sex couldn't join in on the fun. Here's to hoping, because that would actually be a good thing.
