Youtube is starting a game channel and going to be showing IPL. To be honest, this is huge! This makes a lot more sense than ESPN2, the demographic is just right, and this will definitely help propel ESPORTS to the mainstream.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/johngaudiosi/2011/11/02/esports-will-be-part-of-the-focus-on-youtubes-new-video-game-channel-start/
YouTube is investing heavily in entertainment, hoping to lure more eyeballs to its site with broadcast-quality content. The site has partnered with IGN Entertainment to launch the official game channel, START. IGN will also be working with Shine Group’s Reveille, the production company behind internationally successful TV series like “The Biggest Loser” and “MasterChef”. All three companies are owned by News Corps.
Debuting in early 2012, the online channel will introduce new TV-quality content around gaming to YouTube. Among the first shows to debut will be IGN Pro League. This show will follow top-ranked pro gamers as they traverse the globe to compete in a world class professional gaming tournament complete with cash prizes, screaming fans and all the trappings of a nationally televised sporting event. IGN has been streaming its new pro gaming events to fans already, but this new deal with YouTube will give pro gaming a potentially huge mainstream audience.
Other shows that will run on START include: The Next Game Boss, an elimination competition series where teams of independent game producers compete to win funding to build the next big indie game;
Game Over, a game, tech and entertainment news show and Celebrity Assassin, a show that allows celebrities to show off their gaming skills. Roy Bahat, president of IGN Entertainment, talks about the role eSports will have on START and what’s in store for gamers in this exclusive interview.
What type of gaming content will you be rolling out?
It probably won’t be information shows talking about games. It will probably be things that convey the emotion of being part of the video game world. Some of it is going to be competitive gaming and eSports. Some of it could be things set in a game world that use the game characters in a funny or dramatic way. Some of it is just going to be comedy that anchors in the world of games. One of our concepts is basically two guys who are working at a game store and it’s a comedy where they play off of each other, basically. So stuff like that where the references are anchored in the world of games, but it’ not necessarily talking about a game as an information thing. The Siskel and Ebert format applied to games, we think is really hard to make work. It works for like a minute and a half, which is what we do with our Daily Fix on the Web, but to do it as longer form on a television screen, we just think that’s hard.
Within the eSports realm, will you focus on the IGN Pro League or also the other leagues out there?
I think we’re going to want to bring great content to the screen. We obviously believe that the IGN Pro League is great content and so we’re open to talking to everybody. But of course we’re going to focus on the stuff that we’re making because we think it’s of very high quality.
Will reality shows be part of START?
I think there’s some room for reality type formats for sure. One of the things that we experimented with on IGN is a show called The Next Game Boss, which is basically a contest to be a video game creator. It works because what those shows are ultimately about is people and their dreams. I would argue there are few bigger dreamers than guys who want to make video games. These men and women are so determined and they’re working in a visual medium, so it looks great on a television screen. I think there is going to be room to do some reality type programming, competitive programming that’s set in the video game space.
Do you have a sense of how many shows you’ll launch with?
The first thing I’d say is I’d be lying to you if I told you I knew which shows were going to work. Part of the magic of this format is you don’t have to commit to doing a super expensive pilot before you have feedback from the audience. We are going to try some things and then evolve once we see what’s popular. We’re going to start with a handful of shows and I’d be surprised if over time there’s more than let’s say10 or 12 that we really end up focusing on. We may try many, many more concepts than that, but we want to be focused on a few things that we think can really work.
Are these things being designed specifically to exist on YouTube or IGN versus digitally distributed content or television shows?
We’re trying to design all of this content so that it works on a big screen. It will all be delivered on YouTube. Whether it goes from there to broadcast, cable, or other top platforms, all remains to be seen. But this is content for you to sit on a couch and be entertained by, as opposed to on-demand content where you’re looking for something that’s about a particular game because you want to solve a certain level in Angry Birds and you need to figure out how to get the last star.
Most new TVs have Internet channels. Will this feed into that?
One hundred percent. We love the opportunity to create content that’s going to entertain. We’re thrilled to be working with YouTube now and what unfolds down the line we’ll just have to play the ball as we find it.

This is huge. Nice, grats to IGN
Pretty cool, the more the merrier.
I think this will be a great way to introduce e-sports to a more traditional audience. They go to youtube and see some SC2 game and then they get hooked. Glad to see YouTube getting involved in e-sports.
Wow! This is a big step to going mainstream.
Very exciting. I wonder what other channels will be getting this Youtube hookup?
wow. this could be the most important news since a loooong time...
Really great, to ESPORTS
Oh man they need to get MLG going on... that would be so awesome too! Congratulations IGN!
I think this is a great step before showing something on ESPN. I don't think, at it's current state, SC2 could survive on TV alone but an internet channel with a heavy focus on SC2 sounds like a step in the right direction.
WTF, this could be freaking HUGE!! :D
It will be called.... YouTV, TubeTV
I wonder how it would be like if youtube offered streams Bunch of new people would join E-sports. Would be perfect ;]
Holy Daaaamn. Knowing how freaking huge youtube is, this could indeed very much do some major impact!
this is great! i love youtube and esports!!
Oh fuck! This is great. :D
Thank god they're sponsoring IPL and not some shitty tournament. IPL really shows the best of E-Sports and what it is capable of.
Holy fuck, this is pretty bigt ;o
Congratz IPL, and Congratz E- Sports ;o
Congrats IPL!! Hopefully MLG will follow suit as well.
IGN truely doing amazing things for starcraft 2 , and ofcourse youtube for taking this incentive
Holy shit, serious props to IGN since it seems like they've played a major role. I believed it when people said IGN stepping into eSports is big, but this big? Fucking awesome news.
I don't want mainstream people to watch e-sports.

With this we might very well break whole new records in term of awkwardness, BEHOLD
On a more serious note, sounds... ok. They are trying to make something new that's for sure.

I think this is really great.
Youtube isn't dumb and they most likely look at the stats and see how many subscribers/views esport related genre has.
Hope this is just the beginning!

There's always those minority of people who think they're special or cool because they're part of a niche community. It's like when bands get blow up and get huge and nobody cares if you were a fan since the beginning. Immature, really.

This seems fantastic! Can't wait to see this in action!

Yeah well, maybe if SC2 is shown over youtube, there will be some people who say "Hey, this Starcraft thing looks nice, i will try that out." But I would not like people who watch and follow starcraft halfhearted. Hmm....
For me, starcraft play a decent role in my life. Its an awesome game with a huge and awesome community, and it doesn't deserve to be "sold out" to random people.

I agree. the demographic here is much more ideal for ESPORTS. It is also 1000% more convenient than something on TV... I hope MLG will follow suit. then we can have a super ESPORTS channel... oh my

That's what i thought when people got into SC2 and talked about how great it was, i felt kinda irritated because these people didn't come from brood war and didn't 'get it' on a scale that i did.
There's no reason for people that came into SC2 to try and keep it to themselves at this point.

Always knew a huge organisation such as IGN have the right ideas going forward, introducing eSports to a mainstream audience. Congratulations to everyone involved, including all the casting team. They all must be really excited about this news. I wonder how many people would watch from the YouTube homepage. They numbers who just click on YouTube everyday must be staggering.
So many hipster nerds in here. This is great news!
Edit: Cat clicked post
This will for sure get more people watching starcraft, I am so excited to see what happens.

Will check this out when it is up!

Definitely makes more sense then ESPN. Sounds awesome.
Great news, IGN really pulling through for esports.
Nice Gordon Hayward pic in the article lol

This makes a lot more sense than trying to reach regular TV. This is a great news but let's see how it develops before being to enthusiast although IGN has already proved their commitement to the esport community.
funny human development / ways , + step for numbers
This is awesome IGN gogo!
At last! IPL is making MLG look baad in comparison. Seriously the battle to between MLG and IPL will be one of the most amazing things in 2012.
I guess they could maybe use the revenue created to add more leagues paying them for that content and uploading them after those leagues profit on the live streaming and early vods. Imagine like every second of dreamhack nicely uploaded on youtube and of course share the revenue. I would like that.
Great move!
great move, I actually much prefer this to the ESPN2. Great job IGN <3
that is definately fkn awesome
Love it, I feel like this move leapfrogs SC2 into the mainstream spotlight. It'll be interesting to see how many viewers get pulled in.
My big hope is that they don't miss their target audience with some of the shows they put up, while they try and make them more mainstream. It's happened in the past, where there's a great concept, but in making it more accessible for other people, they lose their entire actual target demographic and end up tanking.
I have faith though, and I really can't want to see how this turns out!
YouTube will attract new viewer for sure.
As long as we all press that thumb up button!
This is gonna be awesome!
This is FANTASTIC! The day when talking about SC2 with my IRL friends won't label me as a geek... it's getting closer!!!!
woohoo that's awesome! youtube already gets a HUGE amount of view for gaming videos in general, so adding ESPORTS to the mix will for sure bring in more people! :D
This is amazing! E-sports just keeps getting better and better
Awesome! Can't wait for the day we see people flying little MVP flags out their car windows instead of hockey or football teams.

It's good, I guess. But I still don't trust youtube with anything e-sports related since they closed the jon747 account. -___-;;

The amazing amount of content IGN are pushing out is brilliant. Well done and congratulations!

I would kill to get signed into this, it would be awesome. I hope Youtube does something with streaming next, they would be getting a ton of income if they had a more relaxed streaming service and allowed people like Destiny and Day9 to stream with ease.
hot damn this is going to be big. I am sure we can all assume that there is going to be a big dose of money that will come with this :D
i nearly had a heart aattack, both from the excitement that Youtube was interested and the possibility that they might feature some unknown league with no experience. I'm glad they chose IPL, especially as it comes off from its recent season that gave them more experience and confidence of running a live show.
Holy crap this is a huge step forward.
Mad props to IGN for their commitment to e-sports.
omgomgomgomg awesome! this is way better than a cable tv channel
This is really great news! I just hope they give it enough exposure on the youtube website for people to get lured on to the channel

Excellent news!
Weren't we just having a discussion about getting SC2 on ESPN and many of us were arguing that TV is the wrong medium for SC2? I think we just found a solid alternative!

Damn it! As if i didn't have enough ways to procrastinate as it is.
Awesome news.
Oh man this is fantastic news. Such a better play than espn. I love how other ppl are as happy as I am about this. gogogo sc2
Holy hell. I saw something about this earlier, but I didn't think it was anything near this scale. Having IGN behind this after the amazing job they've done with IPL makes me super happy in the pantaloons. If I have faith in anyone to provide the quality required to draw in new people it's them. Really, really cool news.
What does this even mean? They'll be putting up a youtube account channel for gaming related videos? How different is this than what we already have.
Congrats Youtube and IGN, hopefully MLG will follow suit
Woo! YouTube makes a ton of sense for an eSports platform this actually makes me pretty damn excited.
This is 1000 times better than sc2 on television, in my opinion. The target audience is I think more likely to be browsing youtube than flipping channels now anyways.
I still don't really like IGN becoming central to e-sports because to me they've always been emblematic of a gameing media that offers no real reviews or criticisms of the industry but just acts as a mouthpiece for teh bigest companies. Still, if they do right by e-sports I'll support them.
Holy crap, this is awesome!
This might actually be better than it going on TV imo. Just by the nature of how online content works, there are some definite upsides like the content not being limited to a time segment, and the fact that most people who will click on the video will at least be somewhat curious, rather than bumping into it on a channel they typically watch, and hating it since it isn't a "sport."
great news for esports! Go esports!
Holy shit. This will be awesome.
Shouldn't this be front page by now? On the comunity spotlight?
huge news... hope sundance is reading because this is the better route, not getting on ESPN2.
They talk about Angry Birds. They need to get their definition of "game" correct.

IGN and YouTube saving eSports?!?
Great news for the community. YouTube sponsorship of one of the greatest tournaments I've ever seen (IPL3 was crazy!) means more great games and production quality for everyone.

The title of this thread instantly made me come.
New mainstream online channel for esports? <3 Youtube forever

Cool bro! Hopefully no copyright problems on Youtube though. They have to give access to every country possible so this industry will continuously grow.

I'm never gonna be an engineer, that's what the world of esports is saying to me?

This is awesome, grats IGN, and good luck!
Looking forward to watching the YouTube channel.

This is where esports needs to go, not ESPN.

This is awesome news. Good luck and congrats to IGN.

HOLY MOTHER OF THE CHRIST OUR SAVIOUR
This is pretty exciting, IGN was already producing the best esports tournaments I've ever seen, so naturally my mouth is watering right now just thinking about what they will be able to accomplish with this.
I really hope IGN manages to set even a higher standard yet again and hope its popularity grows as they deserve it.

going to be very interesting to see the competition/cooperation between IPL and MLG from here on. news corp could probably buy out MLG and use it as its major esports hub with the IPL staff working on internet competitions and MLG working on the live ones.

This is potentially a huge step towards SC2 on television in the U.S. The community needs to do absolutely everything it can to help them make this partnership successful. Get the word out!

IGN knows how to play their cards right. I think they made the right choice choosing SC2 as the primary game they endorse and sponsor. First with the IPL, and now pushing the IPL to be broadcasted on Youtube. IGN's doing things right to promote SC2.

The IPL is so far ahead of the NASL it feels silly to even compare them. Either you didn't watch IPL 3 or you're just really biased towards the NASL. Personally i think if they chose the NASL instead of the IPL it would be a terrible thing for esports in general.

I much prefer the existing casts on YT for entertainment purposes.

this seems more like a tv station rather then a streaming thing, so Jtv is fairly safe imo.

Seems like a great step forward for esports....but I feel the need to mention my doubts.
We (as a community) need to be careful that we don't start moving too quickly. It is great that this will bring more viewers and help promote the growth of esports, but it should also be noted that we don't have anything to fall back on should the response be negative.
For example, the thread recently made by Cloud about the payment of pro players is something that shouldn't be an issue if we are to move forward as a legitimate "activity", for lack of a better word. This is the kind of stuff that will give us less respect in the eyes of the masses should it become well known through the rapid exposure that we are receiving.
Poorly phrased maybe and I'm sure I could explain better, but I do feel apprehensive about this quick jump to the mainstream. However, I'm still PUMPED about getting an esports YouTube channel :D
What's this talk about mainstream? An online gaming focused channel on YouTube is hardly mainstream. The biggest implication is the cross promotion that might occur by having it set beside other gaming oriented shows.

I don't really see this as moving too fast, esports have been around for quite a while now. To me it just looks like a huge, but logical, step forward.

I agree with what you say but I still have doubts. Huge steps and risks are necessary, but I hope that we have the permanent infrastructure in place before we take too big of a step (as per the payment issue). That way we always have something to fall back on should this not live up to expectations and fail.
Still excited :D

We (as a community) need to be careful that we don't start moving too quickly. It is great that this will bring more viewers and help promote the growth of esports, but it should also be noted that we don't have anything to fall back on should the response be negative.
I don't really see this as moving too fast, esports have been around for quite a while now. To me it just looks like a huge, but logical, step forward.

The esports scene doesn't depend on Youtube so i don't really see any problem there, it's doing quite well right now. The worst that could happen would be finding out that we reached our peak in viewers etc. That would hurt but it will happen at some point anyway.

I got so excited while reading it. This is so unbelievably awesome!

Very true. I do also believe this is a much better step than the initial ESPN idea as it allows us to reach every corner of the globe instead of just us North Americans. This will allow us to extend to the maximum amount of viewers instead of just a segment of the globe. This will at least be a test of exactly how popular something like SC can be with the general public, or at least the part that frequents YouTube.

This is soooo awesome! And a big step for eSports!
Wow I just saw this, great stuff! Thanks so much
A reality show? Seriously? Please don't do that. Happy about the partenership though.
Nothing but good can come from this. Awesome!
Awesome!!! Youtube is an exemplar of modern media platforms, and IPL's slick production will be a great introduction to ESPORTS for the masses.
I hope in the future we can see more collaboration between the big players in the NA ESPORTS arena alongside major media outlets to push SC2 further into the mainstream.
I'd like to see an e-sports show similar to "Pros vs Joes".
and how is MLG going to counter..
I never thought IGN would do as much for ESPORTS as they have actually done. Fuck me, this is so huge.
This is cool. I dig those guys at IPL. I love these events and things just put together by people who love the game. I hope that not all of their shows are going to be lame though like most television stations. =)
IPL2 and particularly 3 was awesome, so this pleases me.
I hope they figure out some clever way to improve discussion quality.
The idea of twitch.tv chatrooms merging with YouTube comments is downright horrific.
Fantastic news, way better than getting on ESPN.
Youtube does support streaming, doesn't it? So maybe, they won't be using twitch.tv.
As long as there aren't stupid restrictions based on country then this'll be awesome. Although wouldn't surprise me at all if there was.
Well I suppose it is about time to remove that adblock for all of youtube and not just certain channels.
not really great news. every cooperation with google should be avoided if possible. Don't really like, but on the other hand, the content produced is not interesting to me anyway
I hope they make a Roku channel for this as well
Hell Yeah sounds very good!!
This is awesome. I think this is honestly the best way to get more SC2 out there to people

on topic (sry): great news, go esports!!

Amazing Grats to IPL, awesome production value so it's nice to see em to got on there
wow this is truly awesome great for ipl great for esports
Wow, I can't believe I've been putting off reading this piece of news until now. Youtube will steal even more productivity- awesome.

Great news. Grats to IGN.

Why the google hate?

hmmm....I hope the PR person that will be doing the YouTube IPL shindig will do it right. I don't want IPL to just disappear. But if it's done correctly maybe GOM will take note and attempt to utilize YouTube too!

IGN, you are seriously amazing, not only are your IPL broadcasts some of the most fantastically high quality starcraft I've ever seen, you've got massive production values and are really supporting eSports. I'm not going to lie, until recently with your Starcraft debut I never really read your site as someone from the UK other than Matt Cassiama banging on about a new Kid Icarus (he must be so happy now) but thanks for everything you're doing for our community. <3

An... interesting step forward. And another push for online and streaming, another possible step away from television? Good or bad, for either direction?
Youtube is most likely the biggest company to recognize e-sports now, i'm happy that they made a new channel!
I'd consider that a win for ESPORTS
PLEASE tell me START will be available in the United Kingdom, on both digital TV and online.
Can someone help me understand the details here. So will YouTube allow streaming similar to TwitchTV and IPL will move over to this YouTV streaming?
I like, I like YouTube, one of the biggest websites in the world helping out eSports? Only massively great things can come from this.

No one is going to get hooked on esports by account of the current IPL caster pool, just saying...

Going in the right direction.

I agree. If casters like HD and TotalBiscuit were to be shown on youtube, there is no way they would be successful.

First i didnt see the sarcasm, and i thought you were just retarded, but then i realised what you mean.
As far as i know, totalbiscuit isnt employed by them, he has only done some casting for them, the rest of their casters are just boring, painuser, catspajamas, HD...
Im not bashing, but if i put myself in a person that has no idea what starcraft is shoes, and the first thing i see is painuser and catspajamas casting, i think i would just turn it off immediately. On the other hand, if i saw day9 and husky, or tastosis, i would be hooked by the simple fact of the awesome people commentating, and thus, have an increased chance of getting hooked to the game itself.
Again, i mean no disrespect to the casters mentioned, its just how i see it.
Although I really do enjoy the casting of HD, Catspajamas, and Painuser, I honestly think that Tasteless and Artosis would be the best face we could show the mainstream world. They are kinda way, way better than anyone else out there, I would say better than most sports casters. HD, Cats and Pain are good, really good, but they aren't the best way to showcase our community.
K9 would be a good casting duo too.
I know that these guys obviously aren't employed by IGN, but it would be cool to see them brought on as guests sometimes. When possible. IPL online stuff is mostly casted from VODS anyway, so it would be logistically possible.
Are you guys serious? Husky has 500k~ subscribers on youtube.
HD has what, 400k~? and we're all talking about being worried about the IGN casters? Youtube is where they got famous and you guys are stressing about them doing well on a YOUTUBE channel?
Casters like HD have been broadcasting to the mainstream world since SC2 came out - how do you people think they got involved in the scene? Catspajamas and Painuser are just as good as HD or Husky as well.
Casters won't be a problem my friends.
This sounds sick. Will it be like a TV format with commercial breaks and stuff or will it be more like a stream?
This is fantastic!!
And yeah I think for the most part the casters are fine and dandy from IPL. I'm not a huge fan of HD's style, but they tend to be a good bit smoother than the casting of something like NASL. Their styles seem to flow better for me, so as not to interrupt watching the game with awkward phrasing/casting moments and such. Sure, Artosis/Tasteless/Day9 would be amazing, but they can't be everywhere.

Its pointless to discuss your opinions of casters.
However i should mention that husky isnt involved with ign in any way i dont think.

Holy shit, this is actually the biggest thing.
WE NEED TO BE MAKING MORE OF A FUSS.
Huge step for eSports! Definitely going to help get it more mainstream and everything. Can't wait.

Casters won't be a problem my friends. I agree, they are definitely the most accessible casters for someone entering into Starcraft. The problem I have, however, is that they definitely do not do do a great job of displaying the strategic depth of the game, and as such, can prevent people from delving any deeper into the game than the IPL

Western E-Sports will soon be > Korean scene
Grats IGN and youtube is gonna get a huge boost... Gamers everywhere rejoice.

Another giant step forward! good to see!

Anything that brings new audience into SC2 is good. While some people will never "delve" into the strategic depth of the game, others eventualy will. What level people enjoy SC2 on and what events they watch shouldnt concern anyone, only that they are watching.

Really? You're comparing the success of YouTube channels by how many subscribers they have?
This is the most subscribed channel on YouTube, RayWilliamJohnson. 4,949,692 accounts subscribe to this crap. And I'm not even kidding here.
Nearly all of his videos are him taking random clips from the internet, and regurgitating them into a several minute video format where he's like "HEY GUISE, YOU WANT TO SEE THIS REALLY FUNNY VIDEO OF A GRANNY FALLING OVER? YOU KNOW YOU WANNA!!!!" and similar crappy one-liners.
In fact, the only remotely bearable thing RayWJ has ever done was Your Favorite Martian, his cartoon band. The channel of which has ~30% of his subscribers, a total of 1,639,647.
What about the 8th most subscribed to channel on YouTube, Fred. Because people love watching videos about an adolescent who has raised the pitch of his voice through editing software. And worse... was given his own fucking movie.
I'm not bashing HD or Husky in any way, it's just that they were arguably first to the punch as far as SC2 content goes. The second probably being TotalBiscuit followed by the ex-BW casters and pros like Artosis, Moletrap, Diggity etc, and then the hundreds of copycats trying to make their name as casters. I don't think subscriber base is a very good sign that would hint how good of a commentator you are. Sure, if you got subscribers, you're not terrible, but that's all I think it says about HD and Husky. They're not terrible. They're very bearable and even good in ways.
Plus arguably, they have done more for the community than more obscure casters have. HDH Invitational, HD World Tournament, hell.... even TotalBiscuit has done a fucktonne with his SHOUTcraft Invitationals. HD's made his name with IGN and Husky has casted for events like MLG and even TSL3. You could also argue that Husky has made good parodies (particularly Banelings and Void Rays, parodies of Baby and Friday respectively)
Congrats IGN and eSports! Gotta say thanks to YouTube for seeing its potential too. IPL is a great showcase of what a lot of other major tournaments can be if eSports goes mainstream. MLG needs to be on there though!
So I don't really see why this is big news. YouTube "channels" have always just been collections of videos, right? I see why this is important in that YouTube is paying ign to make content (ipl, reality show, etc), but I don't see why this would change the viewership of esports - it's still only gonna be seen online by people who specifically seek it out. Am I missing something?
I guess the potential of putting this on digital tv's is kinda cool, but you could do that for any ordinary YouTube channel like hd's or husky's already. I guess what I'm asking is, how does this get esports more exposure or popularity than if the headline were "YouTube pays ign to make some more web videos about gaming?"
Also, I don't want to get involved in the caster discussion, but if I'm missing something and it will give things more exposure, it would be great to have them show like one match each day from gsl casted by tasteosis. Regardless of how people feel about the ipl casters, everyone loves tastosis.
