Update December 2012: Pricing on this item has changed to $39.99 / £29.99.
Amazon is currently offering HotS beta access when you pre-order! For a full list of US and EU pre-order options, including the collector's edition, click here. The Amazon.com beta access offer may be discontinued at any time.
The long-awaited expansion pack for StarCraft II is now available to pre-order. Heart of the Swarm continues the epic saga as something happens to Kerrigan and Jim Raynor acts emo about it (I think).
If you'd like to help support TL, you can order Heart of the Swarm through our Amazon referral link. Assuming this is the same as Wings of Liberty, you will receive the game the same day it is released for digital download (last time it was shipped early to ensure it arrives on time - don't worry!) and TL will receive a small commission which will be used to help keep the site running.
Note: This is for the physical copy of the game only. That means that you will have to wait until the game is delivered to you by mail (usually the same day as it's released). Similar to a digital purchase, you will be able to use the CD Key to download the game from Bnet or install from the DVD if you wish. If you are willing to wait a few hours for the mail to arrive, we'd really appreciate the referral.
Pre-orders can be cancelled prior to shipping. Box art is concept only. Pre-order is for US only, collector's edition and other countries will be added as they become available.
The price is not final, this is Amazon's upper estimate on the price. If the price changes, you'll be charged the new price - you won't be charged until the actual game ships. I wish we had more information such as a release date or final pricing information, but no one knows yet.
If this is the final price then I'm def not getting this. HOTS is practically DLC to me. There's 8 new units and some new abilities, I don't really care about the SP. That's def not worth 60bucks.

even if it were 100€ i would buy the expansion. i played WoL like >500h, it is a ridiculously good price for that amout of time having fun playing it. plz dont bitch about the price.

Even if you don't care about SP, everyone else in the community moves on and you are gonna continue laddering on WoL?
The link says it's for PC, not Mac - theoretically the CD Key should work for either version, but can you guys provide a referral link for when they're taking preorders for the Mac?
Anyone know if they plan to release a Collector's Edition, or is it just gonna be the expansion? If there's no CE, I'll probably buy through this to support TL
I'm pretty sure Blizzard mentioned early on they fully intend to charge the same prices for all the expansions. I would not be surprised if the price at release date is $50-60.
Considering Starcraft is one of the only games I really like putting hundreds of hours into, it is totally worth the price to me anyways. As long as they don't start charging monthly fees for Battle.Net... that would suck (I might still pay though).
I am going to wait to see if they announce a CE to pre-order. I know I am going to because of the beta and such, but this looks like it is going to be worth the extra dough for CE.
TL is great, but 60 $ is indeed redicolous. Blizzard anounced, that HotS will not cost the same as WoL, cause it's an expansion and it will cost like an expansion.

Nice job, making your first post on this site complaining about Blizzard without reading more than the first post. This is a random pricetag amazon put on it, it has nothing to do with Blizzard. Hots is not even done yet, it doesn't have a price.

they have crazy laws or some shit about western games or something. games are hella expensive there, same thing as computers. my friend is an aussie and he always complains about it.
A) Do you have a link for a Collector's Edition? B) Do you have a link for Canadians? (Amazon.ca) Doubt it would make it on release date to Canada from the .com site!
yeah, 60 bucks is a horrendous amount; when you've got a job, it's like what, half a weekend worth of partying with cheap beer? and if not, there certainly is no way somebody will buy you this for christmas, b-day or shit? c'mon…
There seems to be a lot of confusion out there about pricing, so I though I'd just paste this in to remind you guys. This is from a Q&A with Blizzard (May 2011):
Q: How much will Heart of the Swarm cost?
A: We typically don't provide details about pricing until the game is closer to release. We do view Heart of the Swarm as an expansion set, so for the regions that have a standard box business model such as North America and Europe, we will price accordingly. For other regions that have alternative business models, we’ll provide details at a later date.

Question, is there such a referral link for amazon.de or .co.uk ? I can't order from Amazon.com (well i could, but the game won't be here anywhere close to launch )

The reason the original WOL was more expensive was we have access to two servers (SEA and US). At least that is what Blizzard said.
Wow, $60 for an expansion pack >.> It's probably not their fault but I'm gonna blame activision anyways. For starcraft fanatics it might be fine, but for everyone else and poor college students like me, I'd rather just buy 3 indie games or another title.
"The price may vary near to release date. You will be charged the final price on the day of shipping. Pre-orders can be cancelled prior to shipping. Box art is concept only. Pre-order is for US only, other countries will be added as they become available."
It's easier for them to take your 60 bucks and refund you the difference when it (I'm assuming) turns out to be more like 40 bucks, then to charge you 40 bucks and contact everyone telling them they need to pay another 20 bucks and face the wrath of the angry general public (I'm sure we've all had a job working with them.)
Still safe to assume that it will be at least a year until release??? Since D3 is coming out soon. (obv they do not want to cannibalize their own products, aka they want to leave lots of time between so people will buy both)
I'm always amazed when people think a ~$20 in price means anything for a product like this. If you have a minimum wage job (in the United states) it will take approximately only three to four hours of work to pay for the difference between a $60 "full price" game and a $40 "high quality expansion".
There's a difference between being cheap and being frugal, people.
I ordered my wings of liberty the same way so i would be happy to order hots from tl to support such an amazing site and community. Wings of liberty came very prompt last time and plus getting things in the mail is so exciting let alone any thing starcraft related : P

Wait a sec, so does this mean that when HotS comes out, if I stick to laddering in WoL then I should automatically be able to jump up a league or two? Hee hee (I'll be left 1v1'ing with the "noobs")
Actually, I'll probably get HotS when it comes out anyways (since it'll NEVER go on sale, lol)
Oh that price. Im not gonna pre order it. I will just wait till oficial release, and meanwhile, inflation will take its toll and the game will actually be cheaper

thanx, i can decide alone what i post. And i'm not complaining about Blizzard at all, you must be retarded not to have learned reading yet.
"The price may vary near to release date" makes it sounds like the $60 was decided on by Blizzard and that there is only a small chance that it will change. So in other words, it's a somewhat confusing disclaimer

maybe not since it might get chanced, blizzard can just ask 60, right?
also all these messages helps the people at blizzard decide that they do NOT want to give it 60 euro price tag
we can't afford 60 euro for hots 60 for d3 and 30 for mist of pandaria:D (there go my savings for a new comp )
[Question] if the game is going to be shipped early perhaps or whatever so i receive on the day the game is released, which shipping option should i choose. Can i choose free shipping 5-8 day? or does that mean im gunna get a few days later? When i ordered Wol from TL i got it on time and either way if i had to wait a day i wouldn't be heart broken, but a week might be a little harder
Even if this doesn't ship with the Amazon price, the game has a fully-fleshed out campaign and story that would be entirely worth the price of a full game (which it practically is).
HotS costing the same as WoL, despite being an expansion, and with the changes being announced at Blizzcon and already receiving community uproar?
I simply cannot be a buyer of SC2 anymore. This game has gone to shit, and is only in the business of money. I am baffled that they would charge me $59.99 for an EXPANSION. Best of luck to HotS buyers though.

This estimate is a high-end estimate by Amazon. Based on the info Blizzard has in their FAQ it is likely to be less.
This thread reminds me somewhat of the blizzard forums. I would like to believe that it's close to release because of going on presale, but there's no evidence at all to suggest it. So ima sit tight and cry for not having it yet.

i could just not play, play a new game, then play diablo 3 or dota 2 LOL
Considering how much time and effort was put into the content of the single player and the art and battle net everything else, the price is totally reasonable. I think gamers today feel too entitled to free things.
I would buy it for $30. Any more and I would wait for it to get cheaper, or hope that they release a cheaper version that just updates the Wings of Liberty multiplayer to the new HotS version without including the single player campaign
You should make it a little more clear in the OP that the release date OR price is yet to be finalized and that any information regarding this is speculation and only acts as placeholder until something more concrete comes around. Feels kinda misleading as it is now. Right now this thread does nothing but spread misinformation.
I know for a fact that this won't help anything buuut... READ AT LEAST THE FIRST 10 FUCKING COMMENTS BEFORE YOU BITCH. There is a high chance whatever you are thinking has already been said. I can see people who thought that this would be the final price would question the price point, but even then putting their complaints into this thread is just off.

I think people fail to see that even though HOTS is an expansion, it delivers enough, if not more, playtime SP and MP of a regular game. Most blizzard "expansions" come with enough content that it can be considered a regular game. IE SC1 and BW, both with roughly ~30 levels. D2 and LoD expo was the same story iirc.

And to clarify: I actually understood, but I saw right away from the way the post was written that allot of people will miss it.
so they expect us to preorder a game without knowing the release date, the definite price, or the definite changes that are actually going to happen in the expansion? sounds LEGIT
Gonna preorder once I know I have the cash, definitely gonna be through TL when I do. And for the record, reading the OP made it perfectly clear how the pricing system work. Maybe this is a good opportunity for people to learn good forum habits like reading.

If you get a Canadian pre-order, then I'll buy a copy from you! I'll probably still pre-order the limited edition and do the midnight lineup, but I'll figure out a use for a second copy.

...
Wait, more seriously, I'm sorry TL, but I've gotta wait to see what's in the Collector's Edition. Can't you link toward it (when it's available of course)?
I bought this because I love tl, but i would have been much happier if there was a CE option. Did WOL ever get a CE option through TL? I don't think it did.
I'll definitely keep an eye out for this; Can anyone give a decent estimate on how large the game will be in terms of download size? Just wondering if anyone at blizzcon was able to look this up. In any case, I'll def try to do this tl, and i'll try to see if any of my friends can get it off amazon this way. Thanks for all the work you do for the community!
Just curious, there's no advantage to ordering now as opposed to later when the actual prize, release date, and CE come out is there? For WoL you got a beta key for preordering right?
Anyone know how long it took Wings of Liberty to come out after pre-orders start? I know that HotS hasn't been given a final release date, but maybe WoL could be used for a very rough estimate

And yet, my biggest qualm is with how ugly the OP looks now that there are massive warnings all over it. This is why we can't have nice things like rad lookin' OPs
and the posts keep coming.
anyone know the approximate release date for HotS?
TL, I will kill someone to have you try get something with Amazon Canada. I probably can't convince my parents to make a donation, doing it discreetly this way is the only way I can support the site.
EDIT: Nvm, R1ch mentioned something about that further up.
So this is an Amazon preorder, but counts toward TL? If so, I'll probably do it here. I'm interested to see if there's a collector's edition, because then I'll know whether I should expect a Protoss Collector's edition, which I would buy.

Ah I see, would prefer Zerg Kerrigan rather than Human Kerrigan lol.
Hi, I'm really looking forward to buying this expansion, but I was just wondering if Windows 7 is supported? On Amazon, it says Platform is XP/Vista and I just want to double check before I get it ^^
you wouldn't be complaining if it was $40(which it will be), and even if by some strange turn of events, it's $60...
$20 difference and that's too expensive for you? What is it about you that makes you moan and groan about it?
It's the same damn cheap attitude from these forums from the same people. The very same people who moaned about how GSTL was too expensive(even though it was MORE content). If you're here, I daresay that you're not living on the line of poverty or barely scraping a living together.
The minimum wage where I live is about to be adjusted to $10/hour. One day of work and you can afford the game, regardless of how much it costs. There are those of you here who can afford the game within 1-2 hours of work(yes, you know who you are here).
With that type of cheap attitude...damn, I would hate to live in your shoes, making a wage that your parents would be proud of, yet agonizing over every penny.
When is it supposed to be released? If it gets released before may 2012 I would preorder, if not I can't. I'm never sure when blizzard releases their games T_T

Well, you support TL through this, which is a pretty good cause since you're paying the same price anyways....
In Swedish stores it seems to be priced at 30 euro (cheapest) at the moment, but I have no idea where they got that number, and that is barely less than what WoL was when it first hit, which was like 35-40 euros.
How much will Heart of the Swarm cost? We typically don’t provide details about pricing until the game is closer to release. We do view Heart of the Swarm as an expansion set, so for the regions that have a standard box business model such as North America and Europe, we will price accordingly. For other regions that have alternative business models, we’ll provide details at a later date.

Yes, any link that has our tracking tag in and is eligible for commission would support us. Any items purchased within 24 hours of clicking a tracking link are included too.
"Assuming this is the same as Wings of Liberty, you will receive the game the same day it is released for digital download (last time it was shipped early to ensure it arrives on time - don't worry!) and TL will receive a small commission which will be used to help keep the site running."
So once it is released we will get a CD key/link for digital download through Bnet?
Note: This is for the physical copy of the game only. That means that you will have to wait until the game is delivered to you by mail (usually the same day as it's released).

Wait wut physical copy only. I'm confused son.
The second half of what you wrote is true. Once you receive your copy in the mail, it will have the code to let you download the client from Blizzard servers. You will have to wait to receive the game in the box in order to get that code.

People should avoid preordering this. If a lot of people preorder then blizzard might think that there is enough demand to justify the $60 price, and can set the price accordingly.
If everyone avoids preordering, blizzard may look at the lack of preorders as a sign that $60 is too much!

You can wait and order it through TL later on too. There's no reason to press the issue here at all. This is up because some people like to order as early as possible. If that is not you, no biggie.

Right. Seems pointless? I mean I know it's not up to TL or probably even Amazon but is Blizzard the only major outlet/organisation that will let you buy it digitally and just have an email sent. I couldn't care less about a whether I have the Dvd/box of it unless I'm buying a special edition of course.

It's a mistake on Amazon's website, their pre-order page doesn't have complete information yet. There is just one box of SC:HotS that works on both Windows and Mac OS.
Wow, awesome to see this is finally up!! At least we are getting so much closer now to HoTS and Diablo III that I actually see them up in stores :-D Anyway I will definitely be preordering through TL, just waiting for the CE's :-)
i will order it from amazon uk anyway....its at least 10-15 euros cheaper than at amazon ger ...and cheaper than amazon us or liquid or anywhere else ...mwahahaa

I love how this forum is full of people who have gotten hundreds or thousands of hours of entertainment out of WoL for $60 and have to take the opportunity to complain about the possibility of having to pay as much as gasp a hundred and eighty bucks in the end, even assuming they charge what Amazon is estimating, which is very unlikely.
Even if they charged $100 for the game and another $100 for each expansion, SC2 would be about the cheapest entertainment I've ever bought on a price-per-hour basis.

People whinging about the price of something they'll likely put over 1000 hours into is kind of silly... $60 will rarely get you that kind of bang for your buck anywhere else.
So If I was to pre-order this game, would you get an actual CD key emailed to you for digitally download upon release, or does the CD Key just come with the game and you can digitally download it once you receive the CD Key in the mail??? Just curious since I'm on a deployment but still wouldn't mind supporting TL by ordering the game....

Since you don't play religiously I think you should pay maybe $43, and people who play a lot should pay $72.

I wouldn't totally object to a $40-50 price. I mean let's compare the CoD franchise where they annually rotate in a poorly tuned game at a $60 price tag and gleefully nickel and dime it's audience as much as possible. Think if SC started doing subscription fees a la WoW style for Multiplayer @_@. Mercifully, Blizz doesn't do any of that shit for the core gameplay and does the TF2 thing where cosmetic / vanity items cost $.
Most people overlook the fact that Amazon simply posted the maximal price and Blizz has said in the FAQ that HotS will ring up closer to a standard expo price. Don't blame Blizz for the price speculation, blame Amazon for trying to cement early sales with pre-emptive pre orders.

So this means we can still order through TL when the games release is closer (like 2 months from now)? I am for sure ordering the game from amazon.. so why not help TL at the same time.. but I cant at this moment so just making sure the offer will still be here.
One would think buying a digital copy is the cheapest option, but my credit card knows otherwise from WoL.
The cheapest solution is probably to get a physical copy and use the key on your downloaded client.
Because making and shipping a CD/box, and then letting people download the client anyways apparantly is cheaper than letting you just download the client with a key in the first place (I know there are other forces at work here, just ranting).

Yes. That's exactly what it means, you'll get the US version. You'll be stuck on the US servers, provided you'll be able to even install it over your EU WoL version.
Give me a UK order and I'll gladly order through TL!
.... though I won't be ordering anything until I see what the CE is like. I've been a zerg since SC1 when I was a kid, so I think the CE of a zerg expansion is basically mandatory for me
EDIT: anyone complaining about the price after the last edit of the OP (Last edit: 2011-10-25 09:51:03) is an imbecile imo. The post makes it clear as day that the price quoted is simply amazon's guess of the MAXIMUM the game might be, as it is their standard policy to overprice preorders and reduce the value accordingly once the actual price is known. If anything, people should be reprimanded for not reading all of an OP before posting.
EDIT2: beautifully presented OP btw, I wish I was artistically minded enough to be able to make things like that.
To those who are complaining about the price, for a great game it's not a sky rocket price and you're not paying anything per month, its a reasonable trade wouldn't you agree?
I am amazed at how many people did not read the actually article! It says 60 dollars is the suggested amazon price based on other previous games. Blizzard has not set a price yet! And you will not be charged 60 dollars if the game turns out being cheaper. JUST READ BEFORE POSTING!
There was a EU TL preorder for WoL and I'm sure there will be one for HotS. The release date hasn't even been announced yet, you have no reason to be in a hurry.
Do we have to preorder to help TL? I wasn't planning on figuring out what I wanted to do with the game until a price / release date was announced. So I will look to buy through referral then!
On October 25 2011 19:30 sandg wrote: Because pre-ordering games that have no release date is a great idea!
Why not? You don't get charged until it's time for the game to be shipped to you, you're not paying more, the chance the game is going to be postponed indefinitely is incredibly slim, and you can cancel your preorder at any time if you wish.

I could argue that the game is also just a medium. (and I wouldn't be alone, that was basically KeSPA's argument in their case vs Blizzard. BW was a game, the actual matches were the content KeSPA made money on)
I don't enjoy the game until I make something happen with it. Its a tool for producing specific RTS matches.
But it doesn't even matter if the analogy holds, having to whip out 3 x $60 to eventually be able to play Legacy of Void is fucking too much for an average young person in 2nd world countries.
im definitely going to pick it up through here. i know a specific release date hasnt been announced but does anyone know a general estimate of around when? like early 2012? mid 2012?
As much as in an expansion, it's still gonna have so much content that it justifies the steep price. If you don't want it, don't buy it. I'll have it in my hands release day.
Maybe a mod should add a big huge red text chunk explaining the price and how it's not necessarily "set in stone" yet. It's just a conservative estimate from Amazon -- they don't know the actual price yet. Blizzard has alluded to a lower price being likely for subsequent SC2 titles.
edit: wow LMAO apparently my idea was already implemented, but people seem to be missing the words anyway... ah well! I rest easy knowing the price probably won't be the same as it was for the initial installation
As long as the collector's edition will also be up for sale trough the TL referral link, I will most definitely be buying it through here. Because I just cannot miss out on the collector's edition awesomeness.

$60 is the maximum price. Amazon doesn't know how much it will cost because Blizzard hasn't set a price on it yet. All they know is that it will not cost more than $60.

God dammit, you people can't read, can you? $60 is the maximum price. Once it nears release date, Blizzard will set the price and Amazon will drop the price accordingly. You get refunded for the difference.
I'm strongly considering doing this to support TL. Better than pre-ordering it from Gamestop, by far. And I <3 TL.
So a lot of people asking for the collector's edition. I think it will probably be announced when the game nears, just like Diablo III.
And for the people complaining about the price, please read the OP, and also, even if you say you won't buy it, I know you will, because this is exactly what happened to the Call of Duty boycott on PC.
I don't see why everyone is complaining about $60. It may be an expansion, but it really is like a totally new game. New Campaign, New units, etc. I think $60 is a good price, even though blizzard has money out the poop shoot
im thinking that hots is gunna come out anywhere between 6-12 months. does anyone know when amazon put up pre-orders for WoL and when it actually came out?

Lol, boycott fail
Anyways, If this is doable for Canada ill definitely pre-order it here and support TL.
So from what I understood, it should arrive in the mail on the same day of the digital download?
That's fine with me. And for the price issue, people gotta read the OP! Its Amazon putting the highest estimate, it will most likely be cheaper, but probably not by much considering i dont think you need WoL to play HoTS (right?).
I'll pre-order the fuck out of this off the TL referral link, but I'm going to wait to see what the collector's edition has/costs. Hopefully there'll be a TL link for that, too. :-)
Can't wait for the UK pre-order, i'll pay whatever they say after the amount of time i've put into WoL Is the Collectors edition really going to be worth it though?
Even if it was 60 bucks, that's a small price to pay compared to the other crap you guys spend money on. Sorry, in advance, if that statement does not pertain to you.
On October 26 2011 01:48 Milvus wrote: TL Pre-order available in Europe? Plus increase your comission plz, you are awesome!
Afaik it's not in their hands to do so, it's the regular price so you wouldn't get it any cheaper if you don't use the referal link, they just get a cut of the margin so everybody should do so as amazon normaly has a very competetive price and it's a nice way to support TL. Waiting for a eu referal here.
Edit: Maybe you should explicitly state in the op that while people are supporting TL they don't even have to pay a cent more, it will be the regular Amazon price, they either give that "comission" to Amazon or TL, easy choice I would say.
ITT: Same people who buy COD and MADDEN every year.
Listen, it's only called an expansion because you need WoL to play it. It has a brand new campaign and a seperate online experience. Find the money. $60 every 18 months. Everyday, put 11 cents into a jar. You'll have $60 for Legacy of the Void.
Just kidding, I'm not a retard that can't be bothered to read what he's about to complain about. Anyway, the price will likely be $39.99 or $49.99based on wow expansions, I kinda expect it to be $49.99 though. I will definitely preorder through TL when I do. Also, the benefit to preorder is (aside from supporting the site you use to rage and bm other players) usually a beta key to the open beta.
The long-awaited expansion pack for StarCraft II is now available to pre-order. Heart of the Swarm continues the epic saga as something happens to Kerrigan and Jim Raynor acts emo about it (I think).
I lol'd... And I'll wait to preorder cause I want beta key... hehe...
On October 25 2011 10:49 Emporio wrote: Just curious, there's no advantage to ordering now as opposed to later when the actual prize, release date, and CE come out is there? For WoL you got a beta key for preordering right?
Correct there's no advantage you have all the time in the world to wait. We're putting it up for those who feel like preordering, which always turns out to be a good amount of people.
Truer words have never been spoken, i know there is no advantage but i did it anyways because its one less thing to worry about. Also i can only hope that blizzard gives beta keys to people who preorder the game again. Sure we didn't get them first but it was still a ton of fun. Either way love to support this great site.
Ehh I'm not preordering anything until I at least have a hint at a release date. With blizzard I'll end up putting money up to preorder it and blizard will say "the games coming out in the third quarter of 2017 but we'll gladly hold into your money until then".
maybe im just crazy, but why pre order a game that has no release date, and will surely be readily available from the bnet site when its released? im all for pre-ordering things a month or two in advance, and im also all for helping out team liquid, but is this blizzard just asking for money in advance? i feel like im missing something here.
I'd love to help TL with their commission but to be honest I'd buy it anyways so they aren't really earning it, It'd be more of a donation out of the cost from amazon via me. The reason why I won't is because, 1 - IIRC some people didn't get their orders on time, and 2- I prefer to go to gamestop or whatever and preorder because they usually run raffles and shit as well. (I won a ton of shit for sc2 release).
Please try to make a similiar deal with amazon EU and other amazon sites, I'd love to support TL in this way. Oh well still great you guys are offering this, easy way for people to support you, so everyone from US should totally do this!

i would really like to get a beta key with the purchase of the game. i remember doing this via gamestop and participated in the beta for a couple of weeks. just those two awesome weeks playing around before roaches got corrected--it was definitely worth it. i have a feeling that playing with all the OP units before they get nerfed will also be worth it.
People will not pay $120 to play SC2 if they want to join the game, it is so not tempting for a new player trying to go into the community. Oh well, I do not think Amazon realizes it is an expansion set? Whatever I will wait a few more months to judge on the price.

Why is it so expensive in Australia?
they have crazy laws or some shit about western games or something. games are hella expensive there, same thing as computers. my friend is an aussie and he always complains about it.
The reason the original WOL was more expensive was we have access to two servers (SEA and US). At least that is what Blizzard said.
Yeah, true, but normally the standard copy of a game (eg cod, red dead redemption) is around $60 US and $90-100 AU
They're actually ripping us off, which is why I'm so pro-pirating or buying overseas.

I went to buy it pre-order at EB games yesterday and the price was 45.65$ or something, it was 45 dollars and more than 50 cents that's what I do remember , just letting you guys know the price of pre-order idk if it's pertinent for the TL store.

offtopic but, i went to eb a few days ago to buy bf3. then they gave me a weekend coupon to trade any 2 games for $60 credit value. traded pokemon soulsilver and platinum and received the preorder of diablo 3 :D
I don't understand why people are acting like they would have to cut their entire ramen budget just to support ~20 dollars extra for a game that will come out ~1 year.
Based off of this I'm assuming no one else here on TL is getting the 150$ Skyrim Collectors Edition ROFL. I wanted the dragon personally.
Here in Sweden it's avalible for pre-order at aprox $30. So expect something along those lines. (Also games are generally more expensive in Sweden than in the US)

so this is totally just an expansion pack, right? You can't buy 2 copies of HOTS and have 2 stand alone ladder accounts, correct? To have two accounts you'd need 2 WoL + 2 HOTS?
If they make it an expansion pack, they will not get new players.
If it was standalone, it wouldn't change anything for people who already have WoL and it'd make it much more palatable for people who want to jump in without buying and installing multiple games. It would also help those who want multiple ladder accounts (because technology for separate ladder rankings per race isn't there yet /sarcasm).

Considering Starcraft is one of the only games I really like putting hundreds of hours into, it is totally worth the price to me anyways. As long as they don't start charging monthly fees for Battle.Net... that would suck (I might still pay though).
No they said they wouldn't charge the same price so itll be cheaper

this.... i am expecting d3 and a wow expansion this year. I just have a gut feeling that HotS won't be released this year.
Activision's earnings call put HotS for this year, so I assume at some point. D3 was set for quarter 2, so that is like June-ish. I would assume that HotS would come out in the 4th quarter, since there is some reasonable overlap in with both games.

the first plan actual was standalone, but they scrapped it because of many complaints (and i guess because they scrapped the bnet2 completely). Buying sc2 also for single player i didn't really mind, as they extended the single player because of this. And multiplayer people pay the tripple amount then they would have had before, but hey they get new units, they so wanted /heh.
Standalone is probably a better idea for multiplayer, but expansions also do the trick, especially if so many people complain.

The first plan was not standalone. That was a misunderstanding propogated by some people coming out of BlizzCon 08. I was there, and they were very clear: one game, two expansions.

I'm not sure that's a good reason for them to keep doing it in this case though. Guild Wars had standalone expansions for example on the back of strong PvP.
Maybe they think they can make more money this way. I'm just saying that it seems like this will just further decrease the ladder population if you make the barrier of entry higher for new players. $40 expansion plus whatever WoL ends up being ends up being probably higher than the cost of a new release.

They already have Diablo 3 and WoW Expansion coming out this year. And they don't want to take away any spotlight from the Battle.net championships which will have WoL.

Makes it not worth it. And i'd rather donate 5 dollars or so to your cause or if you can find a way to not have that kind of shipping price for non US residents (like digital) i'd be happy to suport it.
Nevermind by reading through i see you will plan on someting like that later on.
I don't get people saying they won't buy the game because of price. Flawed logic. I didn't point to that conclusion. Quibbling over $10 or so for a game you supposedly enjoy enough to amass hundreds or thousands of posts on a said game-related forum seems retarded.

I'm not complaining about people expressing their opinion. There's a clear difference between criticizing someone's opinion, and saying someone shouldn't express their opinion.

He didn't suggest that, thought if you think negatively enough about anything you can come to any conclusion.
Seems more like he was blown away by the fact that people with 100's of posts on a forum just related to the game would not say instantly yes even if it cost 100$ which i share the same view on.
I have not played any other game where i posted more than 10 posts on a related forum, when this game means enough to me, to invest that much time into outside of the game even, it is a no brainer to say instantly "yes!".
So to phrase him differently, what are so many people so dedicated to the game complaining about price for or even being hesitant on the decision to buy it for on these forums?
i just hope blizzard made the game free and supported it with micro- transations like LOL and MMO-RPG....blizzard thinks they will sell like 5 million copies for 40$... they could make much more by releasing the game for free (charge later) or another thing that would allow players to play without buying it..
if HOTS doesnt bring LAN mode or battlenet 3.0 i will buy but it may rotten to dead , slow decreasing in players
lol. doesn't matter how much the game costs. I got about 60 more years to live and i sure as hell aint gonna live it without this game! gogo release date!

You will need to upgrade your account to HoTS if you want any HoTS content, including multiplayer.
I am not very educated in this matter but will HotS be available for pre-order or digital download in China the same day the game releases to the world? I assume the material copies of the game won't be sold straightway as is with WotLK I believe.

What we think makes sense and what makes sense to Blizz are 2 entirely different things. If I recall correctly they never hesitated patching shortly before or during major tournaments.
Ordered through the link, I wanted a box anyhow and even better if it supports TL. That and I will likely be at work and not able to play until evening anyhow so it will be sitting on my step waiting for me.

40$ is 20$ off what the full price is and considering you are getting another full campaign and a lot of additions to multiplayer Id say the price point works.

so far no info about prize has been revealed in Europe, so take any guess by the sellers (and guesses are all they have so far) with a large grain of salt.
Regardless games are always a bit more expensive in Euro countries, they cost pretty much exactly the same even if the Euro is currently worth about 1.2 Dollars. Sadly we will have to live with that

:x germans actually had it pretty cheap for a long time, when the euro was so high compared to the dollar, unless you bought your stuff from german stores that is. And WoL came for 40 euro for us because of that, and the price increased when the euro dropped, which was really funny. Sc2 rising to 60 euro. But yeah ... some games start at 70 euro, so 40 euro for an expansion sounds okay nowadays. Compared to when full games did cost 30 euro and expansions 15 xD. Anyway if you life in germany, amazon is your best friend, not .de but .co.uk ... unless they are world releases, games are already discounted in the uk, before we get them.
But the general rule is, don't buy your games in germany if you want to save money. And if you want to really save money, know people from the us stationed in germany :x .
Wouldn't recommend pre-ordering a Blizzard game since it takes so long.
Save that money and invest it on something else and when Blizzard makes an official announcement about the final release date, that's the time to pre-order.

That is the price of a brand new game, not the price for an expansion... If they really charge that then that is it, the Blizzard I knew has died to me.
I'd say US$15,00 would be "fair", although still very expensive to just add 4 or 6 new units to the multiplayer.
If you had asked me 6 months ago, I would have told you 100% that I'd be getting HoTS on release. But $40? That's ridiculous, up there with $20 MLG weekends. Starting to think the WoL ladder will have quite a long life ahead of it.

Expansions have always been twenty to thirty bucks per expansion, fifteen is definitely a bit stingy to be fair. Still, Forty bucks? I think I'm going to have to hold out on this, I don't play enough Starcraft anymore to justify blowing that much money on an expansion.
$40 seems fair to me. I just didn't want a $60 game. The way I see it is a high quality game with free unlimited constantly updated online multiplayer.
Really? People crying for $15 dollars? Wow. Get a job and quit after an hour. Go babysit for a day or mow your neighbors lawn. Heck wash their cars.
It's not like they've announced new Bnet features (read 'fixed Bnet 0.2') or have added anything that could possibly justify such a high price.
So far, from what we have gathered, all they did was to create a new campaign and added some fake lurker, fake defiler and other very uninspiring units to the multiplayer. I think they can do a big part of that through their already made map editor.
Are they charging extra bucks for the new cinematics then? :/

40 bux is piece of piss, I really dislike peoples self-entitlement to think that 40 USD is worth for Blizzard to host servers and keep patching their game for years. And to do so without a monthly fee. They've made a campaign and all different types of content, and people whine about all those thousands of man hours not being cheap enough for them.
For 40$, people sure do entitle themselves to way too much. That's half a days work, for a AAA-game that took millions to make, and even more to promote. People ought to study the business model that AAA games follow to realize how groundless their complaint is about a game costing 40$.
Oh, and that extra that you put up through buying it through Teamliquid is worth it. Consider it a helping hand towards the Nr.1 Starcraft 2-community on the net.

Im piss poor at the moment because of studies but I'm still gonna pay that easily for thousands of hours of entertainment. Hell, I'd easily pay 100$ for the expansion to this masterpiece.
It's getting abit tiring reading about people on these forum who are outraged that [Insert: league/game/event/feature] is going to cost money. Tournaments should all be free regardless of the situation and games should cost 0.99 $ on release and have every feature that people can come up with in their own spoiled head.
It must be so frustrating making any kind of stuff for you people. And the price isn't even final yet! Argh!
$40 is a steal for me considering the amount of time I have put into WoL. I am not surprised people are complaining about the price considering all of the pitchforking going on these days.
Fun Fact: Final Fantasy 3 in the states cost $90. Yes, $90. It was a whole game, but we are talking about back in the late 1990s when products were generally cheaper than nowadays. I was probably making $5 an hour then flipping burgers but I found a way to purchase it. $40 for a full Zerg campaign, new ladder units, and hundreds upon hundreds of hours of fun is a really good deal.
I can understand people complaining about prices on one-time-playthrough-games. For a games like starcraft where you can basically play it for years I don't get how $10 more or less would make any difference in the value.

That's not the point. Unless they do a really good package deal, this is going to be really hard for newer players to get into. $59.99 for SC2, and $39.99 for this expansion. That's $100 you have to shell out to start playing, assuming the price stays the same. When the last expansion comes out, that number only increases.
I'll definitely be buying this either way, but still.

Yeah, the part you're missing is that people actually get addicted to WoW, because the game mechanics actively encourage and reinforce that addiction, which is why people will pay anything to continue playing and get new stuff for a long time.
Game mechanics of a competitive RTS discourage most people from playing it in the first place. Most people can't even get into the multiplayer, those that do get frustrated by it on a daily basis, many get ladder anxiety and actively avoid playing the game.

As long as the campaign and free multiplayer is worth 40 bucks to you, buy it. Otherwise, don't
Sure if you wanna do silly comparisons, might wanna check how much content you get for it. An MMO hass nearly has much content in a couple patches then some whole games...

You act like every wow player is addicted to it. Maybe just maybe they think the content is worth the money. I played wow for 4years and amusingly enough it SAVED me money since that was the only thing i played for a while. Was i addicted? No, i could stop when required. Did i played it a lot? Hell yea.

Every addict says they aren't addicted.
Are all WoW players addicted? No. However, if you're paying $180/yr to play a videogame -- you're going to get the most out of that purchase, and I think it's safe to say most WoW players play a bit too much.
Nonetheless, you're missing the point entirely. The entire point of an MMO that runs subscription is to get you hooked so that you keep paying. Denying that is denying a simple truth, WoW is made to addict you so you keep paying them monthly. RTS' are not meant to addict you, especially a game like Starcraft. It's a one time purchase. So comparing them is silly.
Even if it's $40, it'll be 40 euros for us, which translates to $53.
Compare: In 1998, in Germany, Brood War cost around 40 DM which was about $23 then;today it would be about $32 adjusted for inflation, that's 24 euros.
I probably got half of that wrong, but I was bored.

When I say addicted, I don't mean addicted in a junkie "can't-look-away-from-pc" sense.
The game mechanics for WoW (and MMO games in general) are designed in a way to give players things to do and a motivation to do them and reward their progress while keeping the general feel of the game casual enough. And all that while keeping the gameplay mechanics stale and repetitive, and expanding in breadth rather than depth.
There's no way for Starcraft to emulate these mechanics because it's a very much hardcore, competitive game that requires commitment to learning the game, practicing execution and doesn't reward progress very well. It's not something that casual players can take for entertainment.

Why always the hate for WoW? I always get this hipster vibe of people that think because it's so popular it must be the worst thing ever. Starcraft expands in breath rather than depth too (more tournaments) and I bet a lot of people here spend lots of time reading a forum and watching streams, something more passive than playing a MMO with friends.

i can't grind out that campaign lol i played like the first 5 mission and got extremely bored lol.
though i haven't really played any games which would have a story or something with a story worth playing. -_-' I played bayonetta like what 3 years or ago or whatever.. but that was purely cause who made it and it had a sexy british witch who had guns and stuff, story weak good game play.

U payed 40 bucks for WOL. Let's just compare this to another random game. Let's say you also bought Portal 2 for 40 bucks. You played through portal 2 multiple times, played the coop campaign and some other stuff. And lets say you really enjoyed that game so you came back several times for further playthroughs, even if you add up all of that you probably won't spent 100 hours on portal 2. Now WoL, let's say the average game takes 10 real minutes and you are kinda of a casual player so you play like 15 games a week. Thats two and a half hour per week. Let's assume you bought the game on release on July 27 that means if this was your average you'd have spent about 430 hours on wol by now.
And given that this is a competitive site I'm sure most users have played a lot more than that, so to honestly bitch about having to pay for hots (any amount really) is just kind of retarded. WoL has brought you more value than almost anything else you could buy for an equal amount of money, so to invest some more for even more valuer over an extended perioud of time is actually pretty much reasonable. Yes I'd have prefered if sc2 would have just come out as one complete game with 3 campaigns etc., but at the end of the day even if both expansions would cost 40 bucks you would have a hard time finding any games for the same amount of money that would give you that many hours.
It's funny how they could charge another $60 and they would be justified in it due to a full campaign and addition to multiplayer content. If 40 bucks is a lot for years of use I have no clue how anyone ever feels justified in buying much of anything. I'll buy ME3 within the week and the $60 I'll shell out will be more than worth it. I won't, however, play it nearly as much as I do SC2. 100 bucks for three years worth of gaming is so cheap. It's quite possibly the cheapest form of entertainment you can get. Pick up a few hours extra on a minimum wage job and it's amazing how fast you can have and extra 40 dollars in your pocket. That's the only time you will ever pay for it.
40 is about what I expected to pay and I think its about right. The campaign will be almost as long, unlike most expansions, and I think quite a bit of money and time goes into the campaign.
That said, I'm really worried about HotS' new multiplayer units. They look either mostly useless (tempest, swarm host) or hugely op (viper, shredder, battle hellion, nexus recall).
I guess that's dangerously close to a post about balance, so I'll cease. Regardless, yay for it being 40$ instead of 60$
My girlfriend pre-ordered Heart of the Swarm at Game Stop on my birthday on Feb. 28. It costs $65.24. If Blizzard releases some collectors addition I will be more than happy to fork over more for it. For those of you who aren't willing to spend $40, that's kinda sad. I suggest not playing video games at all. Blizzard will be fine without your business.

What a fantastic first post, I must say.
"Anyone who isn't willing to spend $65 on an expansion pack should not play any video games forever and is pathetic."
Call me the next time you see a AAA expansion for $15.
Motherfuckin' BROOD WAR was $30 in 1998.
$15 buys you 3 horse armor nowadays. Good luck with that.
Brood War offered 3 new campaigns.
You know, since we're going down the "Campaigns matter" path. I personally think the campaign is rather a waste of time and shouldn't be considered at all in these discussions since, at the end of the day, all anyone cares about is the multiplayer. However, if people are going to trot around going, "Oh, but you get a full new campaign! It's worth $40!" -- know this. Brood War gave 3 new campaigns and 3 new units per race, and it was still cheaper than this expansion.
I don't mind the price as much, especially since they may lower it. However, what I am worried about is that this game still costs $60 in a lot of places as it stands and by the time this expansion comes out, it could potentially cost $100 to even start playing at the current level. Think about that for a moment: one hundred dollars, just to start playing a game. Do you honestly think that that is going to encourage new players to start in an already dwindling community overall? I hope they lower the price, or they do some sick bundle deal honestly.

I do love this game dearly, but it's more of cautious worry, you have to understand. I'll buy this expansion simply because I love this game and I want it to succeed. However, what I am worried about is that SC2 is quite literally bleeding players, and forcing a $40 price tag on top of a $60 for WoL, is only going to harm this game which I so passionately want to succeed. It's also the fact that Brood War pumped out 3x as much content as this expansion, theoretically, and it was still less than it. I don't want to see something bad happen just because Blizzard is greedy.
I know it's just $10, but there is a massive difference to the average consumer when looking at a $30 and a $40 pricetag for something.
Aren't we over the whole '1 campaign it's a rip off' garbage by now? If it makes you feel better you can think of HotS as 3 zerg campaigns or WoL as 3 T campaigns. The number of missions is (essentially) the same. The number of new units/changes is essentially the same.
As for cheaper, yes but that was 10+ years ago. Brood Wars was more expensive in today money (~$43).
$40 has been the norm for Blizzard expansions since WC3. It's not going to hurt sales.

If you took the time to properly read my post, I said I find the use of including campaigns into cost at all rather arbitrary since ultimately all anyone cares about is the multiplayer. But since people feel the need to bring the campaign into it, I'd bring up the fact that there were 3 campaigns in Brood War yet it was cheaper with the precise amount of new units added as well.
Also, that's a nice little fact there. You know precisely how many missions are in the HotS campaign, their length each, and comparatively analyzed them to the length and amount of campaign missions in Brood War? Hot damn, where did you get this information?
Times change, people have a low attention span. All I'm saying is, I hope they do some good bundle deals so newer players aren't turned off by a high starting price.

Which were much smaller and less involved than the current campaign. Some small talking portraits between missions, missions were basically straight up skirmish maps, etc.
The number of campaigns is a nonsensical stat.
If you took Wings of Liberty and the 30 missions into 3 sets of ten, that is according to you more of a game?
Hopefully the timing of the release allows it to be smoothly picked up by competitive participants - that would mean a release date around early November for the resumption of the competitive season in Feb 2013 (assuming the world doesn't end that much).
I'd hate to see a splintering of (and therefore weakening) of the competitive scene.

why? For 60$ I've gotten 1.5 years so far of tons of entertainment. It was super worth it in my opinion and I would gladly pay 60 bucks again. I would prefer cheaper sure but in terms of return on my dollar it was very very worth it.

$60 for SC2: WoL $40 for Heart of the Swarm 60+40=100
LOL, I can safely say I have played at least 100 hours of SC2 since I bought it(and I have not been as much as I used to) 100 hours of entertainment for 60 bucks seems like a pretty awesome deal for me.
40 bucks for the expansion that hopefully I will be able to play as much or more than vainilla is not really a bad deal. And we all knew the expansions were coming since the beggining so if you couldn't save up the 40 bucks you've gotmore stuff to worry about than videogames.
I mean if it was only a SP player expansion I can see how it may seem too expensive(and even then its debatable because people can value stuff differently) but IMO the value its not really that bad.
Unless you are one of those people who barely plays and just watches streams. But then if you are not playing the game you payed for its your own damn fault if you feel you didn't get enough value out of it
Also its not only units they are adding(apart from the SP campaign which i will play and get all achievements like I did for WoL) they are also improving the graphics and added more physics.
Its your choice in the end but as I said its not really a bad investment for a game you are going to play a ton.
E: About the whole starting price thing. Isn't HoS a standalone expansion? I remember reading about that somewhere. Even if its not there will probably be bundles
Price really isn't an issue for me when it comes to shit like SC2. This isn't like I'm buying some single player RPG, where I'm hoping beyond hope i don't get sick of it within 40 hours.
I can't even begin to count the amount of hours I've put into Sc2...
Also, if you don't wish to buy HotS because it's to expensive, please don't bring your hate and bad attitudes here! This is a thread for loving the new expansion and Blizzard Entertainment, not whine about how much 40 bucks is worth. If you HAVE to open your heart, do it on battle.net forums, where Blizzard MIGHT read it and MAYBE change it, won't happen when posting here though!
Big hearts to Blizzard for bringing us this freakin' awesome game and as said, I CAN'T WAIT!!!

I'm saying I'm going to buy it because it will give me countless hours of gameplay and it's a good deal for me.
However, for people who are just getting into the game aren't doing that. They're seeing a (potential) $80-100 pricetag and going, "...This isn't really worth it for a game I might not even really like."

Only at least 100 most I know have played it well over 500hrs since launch. At least it leaves me satisfied unlike wow and God knows how many hours were wasted in. the 5 year span not to mention the money.SC 2 is the game that just gives endless enjoyment and the thrill and frustration by playing another player

People are not rational most of the times when they buy. And as I edited in my post there will probably be bundles of WoL+ expansion.

Hahaha yeah as I said I am not able to play games that much anymore. But still 100 hours I feel was great value for what I payed. Not that I only see playtime when I see how worth my purchases were as many of my all time favourite games are quite short. Haha but as far as playtime goes I did like WoL. But contrary to what many of the forums seem to think I actually find it fun to play
Will it be required to have WoL installed to play?
Wasnt that how Wc3:TFT was?
Am I the only one that's super fucking excited for the always awesome and ass-kicking cinematic CGI cut scenes (not sure they still use CGI) but blizzard never dissapoints here imo. 40 will be worth it 60 would be pushing it if WoL required but I'd prolly even pay 100
You come to a SC2 forum to say you won't waste your money on this game? Was it not a week ago people were bitching about us not spending 20$ on a weekend of MLG?
What the fuck is this shit? Buy the game or don't. No one cares.

This is so reminisent of that episode of the Simpsons where Homer plays Poochie the dog. When the comic book guy complains about how horrible that episode was Bart asks him how he can be so judgemental when the network gives him hundred of hours of entertainment for free.
I stopped playing SC2 for 6 months then came back and still enjoyed the experience. I don't even remember the tiny investment i have put down for the endless hours I have worked on improving my game.
Do any of you think that the game will be the same after the expansion comes out? This is a completly new game. The old strategies no longer apply. There will be new graphical improvements. There is a brand new campaign to play. It is well worth your investment of 40 or more to have a game with this type of durability. You guys are asking way too much of Blizzard that gives you so much.
BTW I asked my girl to pre-order my game for me for the off chance that Blizzard would let me test the beta. So Blizzard, on the chance that you're reading this forum LET THE PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING TO PRE-ORDER TEST THE GAME!!! WE WON'T STOP PLAYING IF YOU CHARGE $20!!!

First of all, GREAT statistics that show that most people who play RTS' also only play single player. I love the empirical evidence backing it up. Really, it helps prove your point significantly. It's not like you just entirely pulled that out of your ass or something. Secondly, this is Starcraft -- not most other RTS'. I would wager, since I don't have the numbers, that the majority buy this game primarily for the multiplayer or for the E-Sport scene in some manner. Yes, they may play the SP but it's not the main course, in my anecdotal observations.

Didn't touch multiplayer till I had finished the campaign. Think before you speak. Blizzard games have been known for a LONG LONG time to have great stories. You don't just skip out on those. There's a reason there are books about their games and that they actually sell. People like the lore, people play the single player. After they're done with that, they go to TL. People who skip the SP miss the best part: the defining factor for the ingame atmosphere.
Omg guys 40 bucks is not that big of deal for a game $40-$60 is pretty much standard for most games these days. Its gonna be a great game and everyone will love it The End

It's not a new game it's a new campaign + some new multiplayer units. I definitely won't be paying €40 for that.
it's only 40 bucks though I invest 3 times that at a night at the a bar when I am with my friends. 120 bucks entertains me for 1 night. For 33.33% of that money I get endless hours of entertainment. Let's be honest, Who's going to play WoL when HotS comes out?
Who plays TBC/Wrath now Cata is out? Who plays SC when BW is out? Who plays Reign of Terror when Frozen Throne is out? The answer is nobody.

Think about that for a moment: one hundred dollars, just to start playing a game. Do you honestly think that that is going to encourage new players to start in an already dwindling community overall? I hope they lower the price, or they do some sick bundle deal honestly.
Except that most people who buy RTSes only play single player.
You'd wager that there's millions of people playing SC2 on the ladder, or otherwise competively, eh? It's common knowledge for over a decade now when Ensemble Studios said only 5% of their playerbase goes online. And it's blatantly obvious. These games sell millions of units but the very best of them only get a couple of hundred thousand users online with a few thousand being the standard.
Hope everyone goes through the TL referal. Absolutely no reason not to do it this way, you still get it for the amazon price (which is usually lower compared to other stores) and there is no delay is shipping.
I'm looking forward the most towards the new galaxy editor features the new tilesets and the physics effects for the data editor will be HUUUUUGE. Also the UI editor. Gief it naow

Brood War was $30 in 1998 dollars. In today's dollars it would be $41.72.
It has 3 campaigns, yes, but a total of 26 missions. HOTS will have at least 20. Probably a couple secret/bonus missions as well. So, okay, BW wins by a couple missions.
BW did not change the engine at all, though did include a couple new tilesets. Tilesets. The campaign "mission briefings" were largely unchanged. A few new background and animated gif portraits. 2d. SC2 is a fully 3D game. Producing maps, environments, cutscenes, and they are improving both the engine and battle.net. Battle.net also remained largely unchanged for BW.
So boo hoo about the couple missions lost. The amount of work they put into the game far exceeds what they did for BW and they are charging essentially LESS in today's dollars.
Is there any bonus to pre-ordering this rather than buying it from the store (AKA you get a cool portrait/decal)? Besides the obvious perks such as supporting TL and getting it on the day release. Even if no, I'll probably pre-order it anyway but I'm just wondering.

This is what I really want to know. I know if you pre-order WOL at Gamestop they gave you a poster.
If the community actually sent a clear message to blizzard that they will not be willing to buy the game unless bnet is completely fixed, things would be much easier. I for one will not buy this game till I know exactly how the multiplayer will look. I do not doubt blizzard in terms of balance and gameplay, but they have completely neglected bnet and continue to do so even now. They need to understand that they will lose sales for such a shit service.
This is crucial for sc2 to survive as a e-sport because the casual base is everything. The population of casual players has dropped off dramatically, and while most of these people still watch sc2, it is unhealthy for the game as an e-sport if they do not actually play the game.
Either way I am completely disappointed with how blizzard has yet to respond to the addressed problems, and the upcoming patch has some minor tweaks but still far from perfect. If blizzard actually had a bnet similiar to tft, then they would retain a lot of players and thus increase further expansion sales.

Totally agreed! Not only that, but Blizzard is far behind in UI and technical features. It's fine to have no LAN, but can't you at least give the feature of Reconnect from Disconnect feature like HoN? I know it isn't revolutionary, how about ELO rating system, would be nice to have ELO rating ontop of the current league system? The lobby of joining a game is so ugly and inefficiently uses screen space, do you really need long horizontal bars for each player?
Patch 1.5 looks promising, lets see if they actually address UMS game listing, and chat window sizing. At the very least they can do is address the lack of LAN feature, if they don't it's not worth my money.

We could add a poll about that but the results would be biased on TL.
Imo SC2 designers want players to play the campaign to get used to the game, while being entertained enough by the campaign itself to be willing to finish it. And I think it is the case. The campaign is really entertaining for itself imo, but even if not, it should at least be done to get used to some units.
And of course I don't think nowadays many players would stuck on single player without playing online neither.
I'm okay with this price, but I just wish it was stand alone Getting new people into the game is difficult enough without these huge barriers to entry, I understand why it isn't. No retailer is going to stock the original if it isn't required but my heart bleeds.

I agree to both your points. I thought the writing for the WOL campaign was very poor. Tychus and Raynor both had zero character... just one dimentional personalities. Which was frustrating to see. "Aw hell..." /gravelly voice
But that doesn't invalidate my other two points. 1) It's slightly cheaper than BW 2) It has at 20+ missions vs 26 missions in BW, not this "3 campaign vs 1 shinanagans".

Sure there is. Reading the amazon forum you learn that if blizzard decides to set a price higher than amazon currently have you still pay the lower price you pre-ordered for. And if it's cheaper you get it for the cheaper price. There's really not anything to lose and you could get it cheaper if Blizzard gets really greedy in the pricing.
If you want to have a real argument you can probably say "It makes no sense to buy it before the actual content of the game is finalized."

Won't be buying if it's the same price as original game. It's not justifiable to make me wait this long for what I suspect will be mediocre because we all know blizzard employees spend half the day bumming each other to actually put work into a game.

Order now, and Amazon will honor the $39.99 price even if it rises. I believe they will lower the price as well if it ends lower. The chances of it not being $39.99 now that you can pre-order are basically zero.
I like your spirit though, I bet you've never lost a game that it was your fault either.
For people bitching about the price. Then don't buy it if enough people don't buy it right away the price will come down fast. Regardless the price will eventually come down anyway buy it then if you want it right away then start saving up a bit more now so you can buy it right away.
Also has any info been leaked about how to participate in the beta?

I lose loads I'm pretty bad, Only plat... I geuinely do think though that Blizzard employees put around 10 hours a week each into the game. There is actually no excuse for an expansion to be pushed back so much.
TaeTae you obviously have never created a video game, model, animation, or anything creative. For you to say that Blizzard employees are not working hard is ridiculous, they work very hard on a game that is played by millions.
gonna wait until i hear how tvp and tvz have changed.
I havent played any 1v1 games this season, so there is no point me spending money on a game i may not play. If i hear that its not a ticking clock for terran anymore, then i may buy it.

First of all: How do you know anything about what blizzard employes spend their time on? Please provide sources if you make such ridicoulous claims!
Now i won't say that it can be called a "new game" but saying "It's not a new game it's a new campaign + some new multiplayer units" Is quite an understatement.
They will be doing graphic overhauling, better physics (if that is possible :D) and the campaign is hardly anything like the first one. And as someone else pointed out, the multiplayer will change the game, giving you thousands of hours of new experiences!
And as someone else have said. If you think it's to expensive, then don't buy it! If it is to expensive to be worth your money, then you simply don't buy it! Do something activly to! Write to blizzard about your issues for example! If you say "i will buy it anyway" then it is obviously worth it to you!
EDIT: Taetae: No, we all don't know that. It seems like only you have inside information on blizzard that you have no sources for yet present as fact!

Ummm wait... What?? I don't see how adding new units to the game so that we have new strats is called a money grab. From this PoV, BW was a money grab for sc1? Did you play the lastest beta version of HoTS before calling units broken? I see this expansion the same way as BW when it was released, it will change the game so it can be more fun to play.

Wrong you are. And no they aren't working hard. HOTS was originally set for a 2011 release... we only just saw shit bad footage at blizzcon 2011. They had units that were so broken its ridiculous, and they said themselves campaign wasn't even started. To originally have it releasing for 2011, you really would question what they were doing for 2 years prior to that date.
Again, you make very strong claims but provide no evidence or sources for it. It's a weird way to argue i think. And although we can question it, we don't know what they were doing for those 2 years, as you earlier seemed to know.
My claims weren't strong at all - they didn't need to be. What have those people at blizzard done(in the sc2 department) from WoL release until now?
well, they have done all that they have shown (search blizzcon hots on youtube :D) and probably a lot more. I don't know, but i don't discredit them with my own personal opinion. Why would you think that they haven't worked hard when you have nothing to back it up.

Order now, and Amazon will honor the $39.99 price even if it rises. I believe they will lower the price as well if it ends lower. The chances of it not being $39.99 now that you can pre-order are basically zero.
I like your spirit though, I bet you've never lost a game that it was your fault either.
why is it 40dollars? it should be 29.99 this is and expo, not a brand new game tho
it is a brand new game, you won't need WoL to play it, it will have a full campaign and it's own multiplayer complete with custom maps and a new world editor. $40 is relatively cheap for a FULL game, the only reason why it's priced lower than WoL is because it isn't introducing an entire set of units but only 2-3 for each race. Still, if activision had any say in this they could easily charge us all $60 because it's virtually brand new.

I have 0% problems with shelling out for HOTS.
That's how much games cost in Norway?
I can pick up a PC game for £20 in UK
Interestingly enough, most "big" games to come costs around 100$ when theyre recently released. 599 NOK. I was actually shocked to see how cheap starcraft 2 was when it came out :D

I don't know... maybe balance changes? They have a team working on HotS full time AND they have to monitor the balance in WoL and fix any major problems. They might not be the fastest team around but they when they get something fixed they get it pretty much %100 correct. Even the ghost nerf looked bad, but in retrospect it's brought win rates as close to %50 as possible. Do I agree that the game should have %50 win rates to be perfectly balanced? No, but it's a DAMN good percentage to have in any RTS. Sure there may be some problems with the game but they are virtually unfixable until HotS comes out because they aren't just going to remove Colossi for example, they would need a new game to do that. Why? Because customers paid for Colossi, and if it's advertised that HotS has no Colossi, then you get what you pay for and blizzard doesn't want to falsely advertise their game, and that includes taking their time with it to give you the best game for your money. Don't like HotS? then don't buy it, but don't bitch to the forums when you feel "forced" to buy it just because everyone switched over... Were you a SC1 elitist when BW came? Or maybe you stuck with WC3 vanilla when people played TFT?

From battle.net Will Heart of the Swarm require ownership of Wings of Liberty? For the regions that have a standard box business model such as North America and Europe, yes, Wings of Liberty will be required in order to play Heart of the Swarm. For other regions that have alternative access models, we’ll provide details at a later date.
TaeTae, Blizzcon 2011 watch the Art and Tech Panel. Check out the brand new environments, imporved shaders, and effects (just to name a few) Do you have any evidence to support your claim they work 10 out of the 40-60 hours they put in each week?

Unfortunately, naive people think programming something is easy and can be done in just a few short hours and have no clue of how a design process works. Even the simplest thing that needs implementing in a large system can take days or even weeks to get done because the programmers have to ensure that it doesn't break any other part of the system in any way. People also just like complaining about blizzard for no reason. I think they're doing a great job so far and I hope it keeps up.
People should really stop complaining. Even working at a crappy barely-making-much-above-minimum-wage job, like myself right now, $40 is less than a days work. And to the people worrying about paying 100 dollars for sc2 for new players, I highly doubt it. I would be shocked if WoL didn't drop down once HotS comes out, since blizzard generally tends to do that once newer expansions or games come out in a series. We'll likely see packages with both games too for like 60 or 70 or something like that after a few months post-release.
$40 isn't a lot for a standalone game, but Hots is clearly not... it all depends on the content i guess, if all they add are just single player campaigns and two~three new units for each race i'm not going to be happy.

It means exactly what it says. You will be charged the money for your purchase, on the day of release. So when it's released, only then will you be charged.

WOL was $60, $40 is hardly the same as $60, that's just my opinion though.
When Heart of the Swarm was initially listed on Amazon they matched its price to past similar games (i.e. Wings of Liberty) and so it was listed at $60. It was only a short while after that when they corrected it to its actual price of $40.
zzzz, I was about to preorder it yesterday from Amazon for a key but decided to just get it if I get bored sometime. Would've been nice if there was some kind of limited supply only notice. : (

I believe you will be charged the 40 bucks but say the game goes up to 50 dollars you will have to pay that 10 difference (charged on your account), on the other hand if it goes down to 30 bucks you will be refunded 10 bucks instead.
