IMO Phoenix is a pretty amazingly designed air-unit, but the voidray concept was not that great, so the other option is that this is a voidray replacement that's an air siege unit. Perhaps it bursts high damage against armor at medium-long range.
The void ray of today is pretty different from its concept, actually. The original idea was that it'd be a fast assassin to fly around and snipe tech buildings, and then come in to deal with lategame, high health units.
I'm really hoping for a shield battery type unit from the stargate; something that needs the player to use it's spell to recharge (aoe or something) rather than medivac auto cast style. Encourage a variety of buildings, and something to help counter emps in the late game.

Another unit that would be counter by... more vikings.
Which is probably why they cut it. AtA in SC2 is really good compared to AtA in SC1 (ignoring the lack of AoE, that is). The Tempest would have been a powerful unit in SC1, where the way to deal with air was to build more ground units. But in SC2, in many cases the way to deal with air is to get some air of your own.
Possible mobile shield battery (wishful thinking) but more realistically I think it's going to be a fast air to ground harassment unit. Oh well only a few days to find out! :D

Shield batteries + mass Immortals + Colossi x). Where is your EMP now?!?!
Can't wait :D. GET PSYCHED GUYS! I feel like this is going to be the most exciting Blizzcon since 2007.

I'm guessing that there's just not going to be any safe path to achieve compositions like that (in the same way there's no safe path to get mass carriers).

Or, you know, banshees.
Why by reading your post I suddenly think about Terran 1/1/1 ?

2 base double robo Immortal, + Mobile SB unit from Gateway + Gateway units. This is done a lot in games, albeit with less Immortal production. Later add in Colossi when on 3 base and stuff :S. It doesn't sound too unreasonable. At least I would stop calling Immortals Mortals, if there was a mobile SB .

Immo + shield battery seems so good that I can't see blizzard not making it vulnerable to timing attacks. So for example, other HotS changes might make banshee openingss more viable such that sky-terran becomes the default. Then if you try 2-base immortals you get run over because all your gas is in robo units that can't shoot up. In this scenario you end up opening blink or phoenix and then transition into robo in the late game.

No way. Immortals are much too weak for their cost. All you have to do to stop them is make tier 1.0 units. Not hard.

Why not just have it auto-win you the game as soon as it's produced?

What something does doesn't determine its balance. How well it does something, does.
Exactly.
The only reason i said detection and hits air, is because there's currently no way to effectively deal with cloaked banshees ( in the 1/1/1). With that in mind, i thought it could have those attributes.
