I just played a game on Shattered Temple (on the new patch 1.4) where I was triple pylon'd into my base (cannon behind) and i tried the drone stacking trick and it wasn't working.
^this is the wall and trick i am referring to.
does it only work on certain maps? specifically not on shattered temple? i know it used to work on shakuras as demonstrated above and i've practiced it with a friend on xel'naga caverns.
i won the game by breaking out with roaches, pressuring the FFE a bit and double expanding but i would have liked a much cleaner victory. or at least the knowledge that i can still do this on other maps and just not on shattered temple. against a better player i would have lost to a good 2 base timing no doubt.
EDIT: just tested by walling myself in as protoss on xel'naga and it worked there.. i guess it doesn't work on shattered temple. should have tested first before coming to the forums.
mods feel free to close/delete..unless someone else finds this information useful
EDIT2: i figured out how to do it on shattered temple! its unfortunately more of a pain in the ass. click on the gold mineral patches and that will get them to stack up the way you need em to be stacked to do the drone drill as demonstrated in the video above. noted!
On maps like Shattered Temple I notice it doesn't work unless I use the gold minerals.
The way the automatic AI works when there is impassible terrain (in this case, the pylon), they will take the SHORTEST distance directly to the destination. So yes targetting the farthest mineral patch in order to this trick does work a bit better because the AI may recognize that the shortest distance is not from your ramp, therefore making this trick null. If it happens on Shattered Temple, you have to use your minimap along with timing to do it, because you won't be able to look at what you're trying to time when targetting the gold minerals.
I tried this on Tal'Darim Altar, and I was unable to break out of the 3 pylon wall... dunno if I'm bad or what not (I can do it just fine on XNC and Shakuras), but I don't think it works on Tal'Darim either....
holy fuck that is insane. That is one win destiny really does deserve because thats nothing short of amazing. i have lost countless games to this and this is actually like the first game that I have seen where a zerg actually won in this scenario

Just made a quick video to explain what you're experiencing. Basically the location of your minerals has an area on the high ground of your base that's closer to them than the bottom of your ramp, so the drones are trying to get as close as possible. You need to find a mineral patch further away with the closest possible place for your drones to get to being the bottom of your ramp.
Obviously you can't scroll back to the minerals every time because it would either take too long or the drones would have scattered by the time you get back to them after realising the minerals are unreachable. To counter this, mouse over the pylon and use the hotkey for area one, default being ctrl + F5. Then hold down the scroll wheel and place your mouse over the target mineral patch and hotkey area two, ctrl + F6. Then right click the mineral patch, press F5 to go back to area one and right click the pylon. Press F6 again to go back to the mineral patch, right click, F5 back to pylon. Repeat until it dies.
One thing you might notice is that the drones still scatter very fast. This is because if the mineral field is too close, they realise they can't reach it quicker. Try to pick the furthest away mineral field and shift right click it for more time.

If you have a drone outside I'm quite sure (haven't tested it, but anything else would suprise me) you could start building an extractor on the closest gas and do it that way. That, as you can stack even to building extractors. After you can just cancel the extractor .

wow this vod was excellent. i should have checked back yesterday at some point..figured the thread would have been closed
i tried using the gold patches (which worked) but the concept is the same except i didnt use the camera controls! i have never used the camera controls but in situations like this and probably several others having a camera hotkey is probably a great idea (for instance, my rally point).
