Today I am beyond ecstatic to bring you a major partnership of epic proportions! ESV TV (formerly iCCup TV) and GOM TV have officially partnered and are starting out with a bang!
While many great things will come of this the most relevant and most important is the inclusion of a highly coveted Code A slot for the winner of the ESV TV Korean Weekly Finals! That's right, the winner (or top un-coded player) will bring home a guaranteed slot into Code A! No "win this other side tournament after" or anything of the sort this is a full Code A slot!!!!
This will make the ESV TV/Nationvoice Korean Weekly the first online tournament in history to offer a slot in the GSL!
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/sxYhf.jpg)
The ESV TV Korean Weekly is one of the premiere weekly tournaments drawing some of the hottest up and coming Korean talent. It is a $200 weekly tournament with a $500 monthly finals. It is hosted on the Korean server, at Korean friendly times, and does not conflict with the GSL in any way.
It was created to help funnel more prize money to more players, as Korea is severely lacking in tournaments aside for the GSL. In the 8 weeks the Korean Weekly has ran, it has gone amazing with some of the new forces on the scene long time veterans.
EG.Puma? Was dazzling the Korean Weekly fans a month before his NASL breakout performance.
NsHS.Jjakji? (Spoiler) That guy that won in groupstage vs MC, Losira, Check, and Kyrix came from here also! Jjakji in fact was the winner of the Korean Weekly Finals #1, and went on in the following weeks to Top 8 Code A and last night earn his Code S spot!
SlayerS.Puzzle, NsHS.Sage, SlayerS.Taeja, and more all have proven their worth in this very tournament.
Even though every Korean Weekly (besides #8) was already like a mini weekly GSL, expect the level of talent and the number of players to rise quite a bit!
On a personal note, this is a HUGE step for the Korean scene, and I am so happy I barely have words to express it! There will be much more to come of this partnership, but this alone is so big it deserved it's own piece!
Feel free to ask any questions, I will answer them to the best of my ability!

Sounds fantastic! Cant wait to hear more about this, including details on schedule, players involved, etc.

Holy hell this is huge news for all the Code B players out there. Amazing partnership!
Bravo!

Huuge news!! Congratulations guys <3

Huge news, glad to see that your hard work is getting some recognition! Thanks a lot .
|
Sick announcement!! Always loved this weekly will be awesome to see how serious the Koreans take it now there's a Code A slot on the line. Gratz ESV!!
|
Very cool, are foreigners allowed or Korean only?
|
Damn this is awesome, congratulations for your company, this gives you a lot more "credibility", so to speak, especially in the eyes of the Koreans.
Also great for the viewers, I'm expecting the level of talent to rise so much, now that there's such a big incentive to participate.

very nice keep up the good work

Sick! Gunna be tuning in for sure!

Great to see all your hard work paid off

What maps are used for this tournament? Gsl or iCCup Maps?

Both. Nothing will change with the maps, it will still have a constantly fresh pool !

huge! now.. how to decrease my latency to korea?

Though this is good news. I feel sorta sad that players who are teamless will have even less open spots in the prelims to get into code A.
With at least 1-2 spots going to NA players and now another going to this tournament.
this leads to a question. Is it only 1 spot a month or 1 spot per week
|
I personally don't care as I watched it live, but some people may get upset you spoiled day 2 of this weeks up and down matches
It happened less than 24 hours ago.

1 a month, I don't think it should hamper that too much.

Fantastic news for ESPORTS!
What happens if the winner is already "coded" ? Would the first uncoded take the spot ?

So sick, such an amazing tournament and I'm so glad you guys have made this happen! =)
I do have a question about what this means for the scope of entrants now? We've still had a good number of Code S/A participants lately, will they still be allowed to compete if winning gets you a code A spot, or will we see it become exclusive to code B?

I think these spots will probably just take the spots of the MLG LXP since fewer people seem to be accepting the invites every MLG.

Code A/S players are welcome, if the winner of the monthly is coded, the 2nd place gets it, if he is coded then 3rd gets it, etc, etc.

edit: One question, does the winner of Finals #2 get a Code A spot into the next GSL? or does that start with #3?

Starts with #3. There was no way to give enough notice to the players for #2 by the time we got the final approval.

Teamless players can participate in this "Korean weekly", right? It would actually be a great possibility for unknown players to get a Code A spot besides the Code B qualifier.

It's a bit of a case by case. Being it's replay cast and has a very extensive rule book (9 pages to be exact) it's not totally open. However if I am made aware of a strong but teamless player I will work with them.

Congratulations! This is win-win for all parties. It allows players who unfortunately hit a really strong player in the qualifiers to get in, as well as players who just have an off day and have to wait another 2 months. Not only that, but it will no doubt give the Korean Weekly more viewers. This is great news!

I see. It would be great if you could include them in the future. For instance we have players like San & SaSe that are teamless that would be great if they have the option to qualify for Code A this way.

Well 24 hours might be enought for not getting a warning here or something but it still would be nice to spoiler it. I think for a tournament that a lot of people here watch over vod's, cause of the time its casted, 24 hours is not enough though. Give it 48 or 72 hours. Well for me the damage is done I got spoilered.

Adding "(Spoiler)" in the same line of the spoiler doesn't really help Diamond. Just change Jjakji's description to something else if you don't wanna use spoilers. And your description of him is wrong anyway. He made Top 8, not Top 4 of Code A.

Well, it can't get any better than this right?^^
Congratulations that all your hard work pays off Diamond! I always love to watch your Weeklies and see players play your awesome maps, and now they will really start to train your maps

It's been a nice small tournament with some good talent so far. This announcement should get rid of many of the no-shows and cause the player pool to grow by quite a bit. Good stuff, Diamond.
Questions: You said there's a rule book and not everyone can enter - can we read up on the requirements for players anywhere?
And is any un-coded player eligible for the spot (nationality- and team-wise speaking)?

This anti-spoiler of multiple days is insane. 12 or so hours I get, but no way I'm missing the chance to point out the largest success story of the Korean Weekly in Jjakji for a result that is already about a day old. Sorry but I'm not spoilering it since it's been so long.

It hasn't even been 20 hours. That's less than a day. You've already spoiled the results for one person. Do you want it to happen to more people?
I could understand if it was 24 hours, but under a day is not cool.

Agree with Diamond on the spoiler front - people need to stop being so squeamish about these things. It's been a day, it's not a big deal, get over it. You'll live.

Holy fucking hell. Been watching iCCup.tv broadcasts since last year and have loved every series that's been done. Love how this new independence seems to be leading to even better stuff.

Sounds great. These stakes should really create some high interest and high level games in your tourney since Code A is so hard to get into. Keep up the good work!

This has to be the hardest way to get Code A.
Still great news.

Great news As I understand this does every week award a non-Code A to winner(or top placed "Code B" player).
This is great that every Code B player will have 4 chances to get invited into Code A every session roughly.
That will mean there will be less spots in GSL Code A qualifier. 16 total new Code players, -3 MLG spots, -4 Korean weekly spot.
I think this quite good, only think that is a bit worrying if there are too Code A and Code S players that will kick out the Code B players. And this would result in lower chance to find the best Code B player worthy of a Code A spot.
But in general I feel this more fair way for consistent player to be able to get Code A.
|
I hope you're keeping the Strong team color mod that made everything look better.

I've been following ICCup since I found TL, and it's always been a place I could find quality games with top-notch commentary, from people who genuinely care about providing a quality show. I'm really excited to see what the GOM partnership has in store for them, and I can't wait to tune in now!
The code A spot is an interesting move by GOM, and it makes me wonder: is GOM TRYING to make there be a billion different ways to get into the GSL? What if someday there is no Code B, just large tournaments worldwide that give seeds into the GSL, the most high-level tournament in the world?
Makes me wonder... if this is their plan, then SC2 may have a bright future as a global esport.
Also, who will be casting? Are we still gonna be getting our weekly dose of -orb-?
Also strange that IPL/NASL don't have anything like this, even though they're far larger than the Korean weekly. NASL I guess I can understand because of the drama, but with so many Koreans fighting for a spot in IPL, I predict a Code A/S spot or three to the winner of that as well =P
|
|
Nice!
(Now go ask the TL staff to rename you to ESV.Diamond, lose the fricking iccup tag, it's holding you back)
|
great news, as always on TL
|
Nice partnership with benefits for all sides.
I imagine now that all the Korean teams will sign all their B teamers and Code A players for it. It would be a good lesson for them. ESV Korean weekly has a similar format as the offline code A qualifiers ( i don't mean the maps but the fact that you learn the full bracket after you get to the venue) so the players would learn how to adapt quickly to different play styles which would benefit them if they would still go for offline qualifiers. Its also good for the GOM. People now complain that they dont know the new players who get to code A and S as could be seen here. More known people by western audience = more viewers for GOM.
And of course its good for ESL.... ups ESV.... Man as good as it sound its way to similar to ESL especially in european eyes. This deal will make it easy for them to grow more. Many new viewers and full brackets in their tournaments full of the new SC2 blood. Couldn't be better.
|
I'd be up for getting orb a casting partner.

Oh fuck yeah with all the new ways to get into code a I'll actually start watching all of it because the level in code a is just rising by the month and there are soooo many good players in code a these days.
|
I was genuinely concerned about what was going to happen with ICCup.tv with the overabundance of weekly/daily tournaments; however, this will legitimize their weeklies to a level unlike any other weekly, and I look forward to you guys reaping the benefits of your hard work and dedication. Congratulations ICCup.tv. :D
|
this is will code a qualifiers even harder as there will be 4 less spots competed for b/c the 4 tourney winners.
|
|
Oh god i am so happy for u guys. U clearly deserve this after all the huge hard work and commitment u put into casting SC2 games.
Can't wait to see u guys and big thumbs up!
|
awesome news looking forward to a Bright SC2 Future.
|
Wow this is awesome great news! Who will be allowed to participate..are foreigners allowed too?
|
Really, really awesome, the games are so high quality and the players deserve a code a slot!
|
Congratulations ESV TV! Awesome news! Keep fighting the good fight.
|
this is great. maybe yonghwa and thestc can finally get into code a through this chance. orb is a great caster too so it will be entertaining to watch and see these high level korean guys try to qualify
|
Wow holy fuck. This is amazing. I never even heard of this tournament before, even though i watch a lot of starcraft. Maybe you could make a Topic on TL before the next one starts with a writeup of the ones of the past and a hype for the next one, so that it maybe get featured in the main news before the tournament. Its hard to keep track of all the tournaments going on, and it is a shame i missed the previous ones with so much talent. Also since i basicly dont know anything about this tournament, and when it is streamed, maybe you could do a restream for other timezones like europe and america, so that we can watch it at normal times. Maybe you are already doing this, but as i said i really dont know much about this tournament.
Last but not least, it seems you are doing a greate job, to get a Code A spot for your tournament, so i would like to say that, congratilations and keep up the good work. More attention might bring more prizemoney and more talents. The korean scene needs more money pumped into it, so i hope you keep on succeeding. Best of luck to you good sir and i bow my head before the hardworking people who try to make SC2 bigger in Korea.

There's only 1 spot up for grabs. They're not giving them out every week, only for the monthly "finals".

This is really good news. Good job for making this happen, probably took alot of work, but hopefully it will be worth it in the long run.
Congratulations !
|
Well done diamond, good to see your back on track.
|
|
I'm really glad for you and all of the ESV.TV team that your dedication finally pays off.
Like you said, this is huge, and I can't wait to see what else will come from this partnership!
|
Yeah, heard this yesterday morning from Twitter or somewhere.
Grats for the deal. You are doing great job Diamond/ESV.TV!
|
Wow this is excellent news, alternative way for people to qualify for Code A which is probably the most difficult tournament out there.
|
Ahh so happy for you guys catching a break, good work!
|
Congratulations ESV!
Hopefully, this'll be a big boost in attention and prestige for you guys. You're doing really well!
Will DongRaeGu's replacement come from a Korean Weekly?
|
Holly Ballz of steel! this is awesome!!!!
|
|
Won't this mean that, effectively, 4 players will advance per month? Are there as many vacant spots?
|
|
Good news! Orb's been doing a great job casting these.
|
That's amazing news for everyone like me who enjoys e-sport
|
I dont mean to put a frowny face on this exciting news but now that the stakes are raised im more curious as to whether you guys take precautions against stream cheating etc? I mean it cant be so hard to pull off if you're in a house full of other gamers who want you to succeed for the team. Is the stream on a delay etc?
|
Awesomesauce.
I hope the partnership can include some of the ex-iccup mapmaking teams (are they the ESV mapmaking team now?) end up getting used in GSL as well. They deserve more recognition than they get
|
congratulations, ive watched iccup weekly since the beggining, and i hope this is a chance to puma to get his so deserved code a spot!

My only issue with the Korean Weekly is the casters are not very knowledgeable and have pretty boring voices. Any chance of inviting guest casters?
|
Awesome news for you guys. Korean Weekly is very enjoyable, unfortunately at very late hours for European viewers...
|
My only issue with hmunkey is that he's not very knowledgeable and has a pretty boring posts. Any chance of inviting some better posters? More seriously orb has a pretty good grasp of the game, he has a slight protoss bias but it's hardly noticeable at all.
|
Really good news, congratz guys!
|
|
Awesome news, Diamond. You're probably one of the best tournament organisers around, haha. Well deserved success. Gratz!
|
|
Oh man Diamond, such great news, ICCUP for the win. I can already see all those code B players going crazy. Great Great News. Definitely tuning in.
|
Datta boy. Looks like you guys are finally going in the right direction.
Congrats!
|
Here's hoping you guys use a lot of new and interesting maps!
|
what is the website where koreans register for these? and what is ESV's website? iccup.com seems like its just for dota and bw.
|
So if the winner gets a guaranteed Code A spot, then does that mean that Code A and higher players can't participate anymore?
I'd also like to know more about those rules that were mentioned to make it harder for team-less players to participate. Why would having a team or not be a factor in entering the tournament? I don't quite understand.
Aside of that this sounds like incredibly good news.
|

I think it was the highest non-Code A, non-Code S player gets the spot. So that means people below Code A don't need to fear being kicked out of a Code S player at the very last second and hence being robbed of their Code A spot. Sucks for people being knocked out early by those guys, though.

sounds cool, glad we can get to see more of the hidden talent in korea.

what a boss diamond, what a boss

Amazing news, I watched the korean weeklys whenever I couldn't get to sleep! hope full with this incentive it'll get bigger and better!

Congratulations must of taken a lot of hard work but its sure paid off with this! :D

this leads to a question. Is it only 1 spot a month or 1 spot per week
However if I am made aware of a strong but teamless player I will work with them.
would it be possible to cast them live? Are you still looking to fill one of the open caster spots? (If so I'm definitely still interested)
|
wait i thought the road to korea gave sase a spot right into code a?? pretty sure that was the first tournament to offer a gsl spot.

wasn't iccup banned by blizzard for doing something illegal? hopefully you guys have blizzards approval b4 you run off making money/ creating a name for yourselves off of starcraft.

I agree with this. Orb's (even... or especially?) solo casting is really enjoyable for me to listen to, he's one of my favourite casters.

I thought of another question! Now this has so much significance for the KR scene, will the games be getting covered (either weekly or just the monthly) in Korean as well, or will it remain just an English language broadcast. Given the nature of a replay cast I could see it being packaged out to Gisado or something for instance?

Awesome news! Its really nice that these opertunitys start to pop up more. First of all the code A qualifications can be pretty dull in the way they are set up, just a marathon of different matches and you only get to see a few, secondly it might make foriegners want to go to korea more often.

Hey Diamond,
Where can we find dates/times who is playing ahead of time? Is there a set schedule or at least a set time where we can track it through a TL thread/individual site? Or will it just be on the TL Calendar?
I'm just asking because there isn't anything in the OP that could move me there (which I think would be helpful)!

They just get the Code A spot, it's not for travel or anything else. I am sure GOM would have no problem letting them stay in the house, but again that would have to be worked out between the player and GOM.

Because normally we only allow players on pro teams (so they have a coach to explain the no-spoiler and other rules). We have made exceptions before, and will again however !

This is great news. The weeklies are always fun to watch and now I imagine they are only going to get better! New ways to break into the GSL other than the grueling preliminaries every other month I'm sure will be welcomed by players, and now there's an option for players that can't make it to MLG.
I didn't notice any of this news over on the Korean sites. I went and just wrote it up quickly to post over there if that's all right

This is awesome! The Korean scene needs more small tourneys, and we want to see more Korean games. Great work!

Does this have Korean casters?

|
Korean weekly has always been my favorite tournament to watch, simply because of how awesome the iCCup maps have been. Just shows how much more entertaining a tourney can be if you're constantly switching out maps.
|
Wow, anything to provide the pros more money in these kind of circumstances is awesome by me!
|
Congrats Diamond! I very much approve of this. Gom, ESV, viewers and players, all benefits from this! The incentive to cheat will rise a bit, but thats my one slight worry.
|
Congrats on the partnership
I've been watching the Korean Weekly since you guys started it and I love it. Looking forward to seeing who qualifies for Code A through it!
|
Nice Diamond, the more hard work you and your team put in, the more amazing results and sponsorships / partnerships you guys pick up, keep up the hard work yo ! hopefully we meet again at an MLG
|
Great news. Going to be good matches to get in.

Just amazing. Great news.

WHAAAAAT? This is insane! So happy for you guys. This is so legit.
I hope this will eventually allow some of iCCup/ ESV TV's maps to make it into GOMTV.

Not at this point, however that's a pretty cool idea ^^!
|
Considering that you're going to keep the maps, this is a huge step in legitimizing their use in competitive tournaments.
Being used to determine a Code A spot makes them at least honorary official GSL maps. :lol
|
Holy crap this is great news! So many ways to get into Code A now! :D

OH MY FUCKING GOD! This is just so awesome, Diamond, you are the king (and the team as well of corse)!
|
Congratulations, this was my favourite tournament already, great video quality, great maps, great commentary.

Wooooo, code A spot is not a small chance. Very nice to see this.
|
Sweet! Will be looking out for your stream in the future. Who are ESV's notable casters? Any names one might have heard of?

the code a / code s giveaways are getting kind of crazy to keep track of.
|
This is good news indeed.
|
Hopefully you can get Jinro or Carn they really have lots of opportunities for Code A now MLG, Weeklies and normal Code A qualifiers. And guys don't think of this as taking up more spots for Code A qualifiers... this is pretty much a Code A qualifier because all the Code B Koreans will be competing in it and they get cash, its pretty much a qualifier you don't have to travel to. :D
Now all they need is for GOMTV to sponsor Korean Weeklies and raise the prize pool, at least the finals to at least 2,000.
|
Well, that's cool way for tournament to gain publicity.
|
Congratulations indeed! I've watched quite a few of the weeklies as i can't stay up late for GSL anymore and don't have a pass, and the competition is right up there. I also must reflect what a lot of others have said in I love and please keep the team color mod, Orb is an awesome caster, Ithaca is a gorgeous map and i want to see it more, and all the new details of the partnership are very much welcomed.
Woot!
|
Amazing step forward for you guys. Congrats.
|
For me this news made this tournament graduate from "might tune in occasionally" to "will definitely watch".
|
ST is finally not sending only the n00b train for Week 9 ^^! AcE, Squirtle, and Rainbow all playing for week 9 (and the other ST non-code players also).
Going to be so sick!
|
Great news, i already enjoyed the Korean Weeklies with some awesome play. Especially Taeja and jjakji. Nice to see some other high quality koreans play besides GSL.
|
Honestly I was waiting to see what you guys were going to do after you left iCCup and let me just say ... I AM SURPRISED!
Congratulations. Nice to see GSL giving love to you guys since you do amazing work. <3

sweet :D
this is a really awesome partnership. korean weeklies have always been quite fun to watch, a lot like the gstl where you get to see a lot of up-and-comers you wouldn't normally see in the GSL

Going to be so sick! What're you talking about? ST n00b train is awesome!
Glad to see Rainbow, Squirtle, and Ace pulling for it. I imagine the Code A spot sounds mighty tempting to them, and seeing any of them back in Code A would be wonderful.

O_________O
i was already catching this when i saw it on. now it's a priority

nice, more seeds for code A

It's awesome to see they're giving a Code A spot to players who actually deserve it

If it's like previous GSLs, they'll just remove one spot from their own prelims or some other method that they haven't revealed yet. This event needs more love, it has great games and players.
|
oi, shit, I read ESL tv in the topic. Well, this is cool too.
|
AWESOME news!!!
Love the Korean weeklies, we see sooooooooo many amazing games every week, and the finals are even better.
It was definitely already a mini-GSL, which was pretty awesome for people that watched and liquibet/fantasy GSTL! I knew how much of a beast Taeja and Jjakji were because of the Korean Weeklies.
Other weekly fans out there will agree, it was NOT a surprise to see Taeja and Jjakji get Code S.

no good. one code A spot less for code A preliminaries. Getting harder n harder for boxer to come out from

Or you know, Boxer could play in this (that's not saying he is, I don't know if he is or is not yet). You get 4 chances to qualify a month for the finals + code B, now he has 5 chances instead of 1.

fu... sion... ha! very nice! glad to see the Korean weekly getting some recognition from the "higher ups". ^^"

all the opportunities to get into code a other than preliminaries seem to make GSL an even harder league to get into.

I like the fact that your (awesome) maps will get even more recognition, especially to korean viewers.

Not only can Yellow play, but I have been actively pursuing him as a player. No luck atm however.

Where is the schedule and when will Puma be competing for his Code A spot?

Sounds like a great idea. Will look forward to watching. :D

The korean weeklies are always good to watch. It's such a great tournament and I'm glad it's now getting the publicity it deserved! Diamond you're doing it right!
Thanks for all the great matches and GL with all the future tournaments!

Stronger team colours mod + Koreans vs non-Koreans + Code A spot on the line + ICCup mapmaking team maps = awesome broadcast.
The only thing I'd want you guys to add is getting poor Orb a partner. Dual casting > single casting.
|
Yeah Iccup (ESV) coming back into the scene baby! This is sick news, I always love watching Korean weekly because of the talent pool, but now I know the great Code B winners get a place in Code A!
|
The tournament is really great, and there are really great players playing, but the thing that ruins it for me is that the only stream that presents the content, the streamer uses the color mod, just ruins the viewing experience imo.

You just said everything I wanted to say about this. I absolutly LOVE the fact that they use the stronger team colors mod. I really hate watching games without it at this point.
A second caster would be cool, but Orb does a great job solo casting imo.
