I think a lot of Korean players are seeing more oppurtunity in international starcraft events. Sure the gsl is great, but its such a grindingly long season with no gaurantee of success. Even the fanbase doesnt seem to be that large. This isnt BW....They realize that sc2 is a global phenomenon right now and I believe the fact that more and more of these great players are leaving Korea to compete will exponentially grow esports as a serious business. People always worry about foreigners going to Korea, but I think Koreans coming to us is almost just as good for increasing the level of play. Puma just won 50grand at a single event in California. FIFTY GRAND. Now he has a team willing to send him to just about every other large tourament worldwide most likly to compete. Who needs the GSL or the GSTL? I love that players are chosing to take their own paths to success/stardom.

Haha.

On a constructive note, it is entirely possible that PuMa was under contract. However, unless the contract was properly notarized and signed it isn't legally binding. If he was under contract but it wasn't a legally binding one (aka not properly notarized and certified) then he was free to leave. It was, essentially a Gentleman's agreement. He could have left at any time he chose to.

If this is the case (and to be fair I don't know if it is) then, while underhanded, it was completely legal.

This is something which actually, Sir Scoots mentioned on an episode of Live on Three but I think is completely accurate, that as esports continues to grow I think we need to start taking contracts more seriously and doing things like properly notarizing them and creating a framework by which they actually become legally binding.

The law is different everywhere.

Which I would think makes this even more complicated from a legal standpoint.

Can someone explain to me how western esports teams make money? Like how does EG get more money now because they have a player like Puma? If the answer is advertising, then exactly where are these advertisements coming from? The only advertisements I ever see watching SC2 is during tournaments, but that money should be going to the tourney organizer and not the team right?

I haven't read the entire thread, but I've looked a bit and can't find a clear answer. Did Puma's contract with TSL allow him to leave at any point, or did he have to be released? (The sentence about TSL allowing him to go seems to imply their consent was needed.) If he needed a formal release, TSL really shouldn't have just let him go without some sort of compensation from EG.

even if puma had no contracts...He was living in the tsl house for free, he ate for free, tsl probably paid for his trip in the us to participate in the NASL...

Puma should have talked to his coach first...Leaving like that shows that the player has no respect..

Fuck Puma.

Silly manager. There is a system: it's called a contract and every sport that wants to be taken seriously employs it.

they probably did have a contract. if i were to guess, it was either 1) had very little time left on it and 2) TSL knew they weren't gonna be able to keep him anyways, so might as well let him opt out

Yeah, but then there is no reason to blame EG or foreign teams for it. It happens in real sports, get used to it.

They did actually. FXO "Acquired" fOu according to Boss. I'd say he's a pretty good source.

Let's face it, EG is just buying BIG NAME for sponsors, for their image. Yeah sure this is gonna be a great great (the best ?) training partner for all EG. BUT I feel like foreign teams, if they want players to keep up with koreans must think about the organisation of their team, the way their players train.
Korean players are not genetically superior but still, foreign are getting owns so badly and it's due to korean teams way to work, the fact that starcraft is a part of their culcture and in a way, pretty similar to actual sports like football (no this is not soccer !). I feel like foreign teams (and the players themself ofc) need to work on that first and buying a big name (in an old dirty fashion) doesnt feel right for me. but anyway, this is both Puma and EG choice so what you gonna do.

Not sure what they mean though. Source

I could be wrong, but I have to imagine that they may be saying its a lie that they're genius's (implying that they're not so smart)? Thats what I got out of it. That and that tsl still wishes puma the best of luck despite the situation.

I had a discussion about this today with a bunch of people.

The problem with e-sports is, if legal action is actually taken here how it pans out.

Subject A v Subject B
A has 'morally right, and contractually right' on his side.
B has money on his side
A's lawyer isn't as good as B's and thus B wins the battle.

Damage is done to reputations, and money is spent. Nothing is achieved.

I guess I am fairly safe legally from this kind of thing. However, I would absolutely hate to go to court over something like this.... It would be as coin flip as zvz

exposure, everytime a player is on a show they always plug their sponsors. everytime a player goes to an event usually their sponsor is visible on their jerseys. the fans of said player also wants to know what keyboard he uses, what mouse he uses, and probably what type of underwear he wears.

What the hell?! Why would anyone ever do that?! I know TSL isn't the greatest team out there (PuMa was their hard carry that basically keeps them in the GSTL), but at least it's a Korean team, and they know how to practice and work hard. I can't say being with EG will help him as much... I could be wrong... To me there still seems to be a gap in the skill level between foreigners and Koreans, but what mainly worries me is the work ethic. Maybe it will help him, but whether it's a long-term or short-term improvement we'll find out. He won a tournament, and against MC, so he shouldn't worry as much about nerves preventing him winning tournaments as much so he shouldn't worry about money since he's bound to win a lot soon. So maybe he just wants to try out the foreign scene? This is just... WEIRD!

As long as nothing in a contract stipulates illegal conditions for either party, it does not need to be notarized to be legally binding. All signed contracts are legally binding unless there is something fundamentally wrong or illegal about the contract (i.e. someone signed it under threat of harm or while very drunk).

It'll increase their competitive ability with foreign teams though, they didn't make it to the play-offs of their own Master's Cup in the most recent season, this time they might have a better chance.
