Hm, if SC2 makes it into the mainstream I can see where you might be right, but when you compare two things similar in popularity (SC2 and poker) there's a clear advantage in the one where you risk your own money. My logic is not flawed, it's a slippery slope argument to mention mainstream sports when SC2 and poker are far from the mainstream.
But SCII and poker aren't similar in popularity. Poker is televised on ESPN, tournaments with ten thousand dollar buy-ins have over eight thousand registered players. Did you see the hell that was raised when NASL charged 10$ for entering the qualification? It ended up with about a hundred registered players total. Even from what I heard from Korea, for registering for the original GSL Open tournaments, there were only a couple thousand entries. And those were free.

Poker has also been around for hundreds of years. Starcraft and esports in general have only been around for avout a decade. I would bet good money right now that will overtake everything but the most mainstream sports (ie Footbaball, Soccer, Baseball, and Basketball) by the time our kids are in their late teens early 20's, that is if my money wouldn't be completely worthless due to inflation by then :p
The point though is that people just understand poker better, since the game has been around longer. Everyone has played cards in some respect and can relate to it, plus the nature of the game is such that there is simply more money available.

Arguing about things that shouldn't be argued. Nice.

Anyone can pick up a pack of cards for under $2 and play poker. Not everyone (hardly anyone) can pick up a decent computer and fork over $50+ to play sc2.
|
That is the worst argument I've ever heard, if you're trying to say that poker is easier to learn than SC2 lol.

LOL theres a big difference between buying a pack of cards for 2 bucks, and then buying in for $10000

I'm fairly certain he's saying that as a way to explain why it is more popular. Ease of access goes a long way, much like how soccer is so easily played because all you need is a ball, whereas other sports require more (usually).
To get into SC2 you have to have a computer, an internet connection and the game. To play poker all you need is cards which itself is already extremely popular, as is gambling.
As much as we would all love to see SC2 on television or something along those lines, it comes down to popularity. There was somewhat of a discussion about this in the WSOP stream chat..

...
He was simply saying it is much easier for people to pick up poker due to how inexpensive it is to play. Needing only a deck of cards, it is easy for many people to play the game and therefore be familiar with it. On the other hand starcraft 2 requires a moderately good computer and the game itself is much more expensive than a deck of cards.
There are several more reasons why starcraft 2 is not as easy or common for people to pick up... but that was the point he was making.

Congrats Kiwikaki thats not a bad take home!!! lol
Wish I was that good at poker!!!

I am disappointed. Kiwikaki's winnings don't even cover the entry fees of all the (ex-)starcraft players attending, it looks like starcraft players lost money overall in this event.

Even though its 10k buyin and taxes and such kiwi musta gone + ?

After watching Kiwikaki's game and some of Phill Helmuth rage videos at YT I gotta say that poker seems like a really funny shit from a spectator point of view. Can anyone tell me when does the today games start (how many hours from now, hate that timezone stuff)? Gratz for Kiwi, 47k$ (37k$) that's like placing 2nd in GSL (even better).

is there another stream ? the stream i was watching doesn't work anymore O_O

I go on tilt on SC too when I lose, pretty badly even, that doesn't mean I play worse, from what I've seen Idra doesn't play much worse after he lsot a game, he doesn't start doing stupid shit, he just whines like no one else I'm also far from being a fanboy of idra
He 6-pooled MC on Xel"Naga Caverns after losing their first game if I'm not mistaken ^^
Congrats to KiWiKaKi, good showing

He will be back to SC2 then?

Lol he never left SC2. Maybe took a vacation but that's it. Starcraft 2 is his thing now and Poker is just a glorified hobby for him, and he happens to be quite good and a bit lucky, which doesn't surprise me at all since he's a very smart guy.
