It was in real time, if R1CH sped it up we most likely wouldn't even have a video.

It might free up their resources to create something better than just a picture. Remember that a webcam/desktop/game can all count as a scene. So it's not limited to a picture, many have actually started using videos instead. To give some examples: Shoutcraft has the different color planets that move around, NASL either has a filler video clip or the break countdown, GSL and MLG show crowd shots. So you could make something really cool and this would allow the producers to use it in their cast easily and thus well. Maybe before it was too much of a hassle to be able to do it and since the games etc come first, not that important so people stayed away from trying it.
So far I've only seen JustinTV streamers use very monotone alternative scenes, especially Shoutcraft had that same lame FX video on for hours on end. This is a very neat program, no doubt about it, but if the producers aren't going to put some serious work & thought into what they show on their other Scenes I'd rather just see what they see, in-game lobby before the game is much more interesting than that because you know the games are about to start and you can occasionally see some chat/banter before the game starts.

Just out of curiousity, when I'm done with K&R c programming language, I should be able to create little programs like that too, right?

If I could, I would upvote this.

The video is indeed not sped up at all, but it would be insulting to think that what's in the video shows everything he's doing. We're only seeing what's happening on one of his monitors, yet we all know that his set up looks something like this:

R1CH is really AWESOME. I'm using it, this is fucking insane man.

I'm kinda confused... can someone explain to me what this does?
