Thank you Day[9] for this awesome league and growing e-sports <3 enjoyed it! Thanks to Husky for co-commentating. Thanks to everyone who watched and participated. And thanks to Totalbiscuit, Husky, Diggity, and Ahnaris for casting during the season!
Thanks to mewvolk for the results and the live report thread. Click here for the live report thread
In true Day[9] style i say "Helllooooooo everyyyyyybody!" to start this thread!
If you didn't tune into the new State of the Game last night with JP and the pillars of Starcraft 2 you may have missed an enormous announcement by Day[9]. Day[9] announced his "After Hours Gaming League". This league introduces major companies such as Facebook and Google into Starcraft 2 and Esports!
http://afterhoursgaming.tv/ is the official website for the league. You can find an "About" and "Press" sections on the site for further detailed information. The games will be played on their website as well as Day[9]'s stream. It looks as games started June 30th, last Thursday.
The finals will be held August 19th at the Facebook campus in Palto Alto, California!
An interesting piece of information:
Day[9]TV will donate the $5,000 grand prize to the winner’s charity of choice
Day[9] indeed is putting his full attention on the growth of Esports! With this league he is attempting to bring in some of the biggest and best tech companies in the world! Support from these kind of companies could change Esports.
The Grand Finals and Bronze match will be this Friday, August 19th 2011, at Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California. They will be casted on Day[9]'s stream at 6pm PST - 10pm PST with guest caster HuskyStarcraft!
You can also find games casted by Husky, Ahnaris, and Diggity on their youtube channels.
wow. mad props to day9 for making this happen-- The way this is conceived is so brilliant and hopefully it can bring in an audience from outside the traditional channels.
I don't know why more people aren't talking about this yet because this is a pretty big deal. You have to give day9 a lot of credit for busting his ass and getting this together. The bigger the names that are involved with SC2 in any way is good for SC2 (obviously).
Really excited to have to well produced, competitive SC2 content that is of a lower quality skill wise.
Day9's point about college level sports being more entertaining to watch is true for me personally, I love watching a gritty, messy match with a mixture of brilliant play and obvious mistakes.

Exactly why i had to make a topic. xD i was like wuuutt no topic yet?? K making one. <3 i can't wait for this really. I'm with google and facebook honestly. Facebook i love and Google has Chrome <3! Now we can say Facebook Fighting Google. Fo realz.

No, that's actually the fake megumixbear who goes around bming people on bnet pretending to be her. This is an interesting surprise because Day9 is friends with the real megumixbear and now the imposter is in his league.
It's actually a problem for her because he goes around bnet introducing himself as her and stuff he does comes back at her cause people think it's her. She had to change her name to all lower case to try to avoid confusion. Wonder what Day 9 will think about this. I mean I don't really have respect for someone pretending to be someone else online. Kind of weird and juvenile in my mind.
I really don't think Day9 would stand for someone making a mockery of one of his friends, but this is also his brand new league so he's in an interesting predicament. However, I really don't think it's a big deal if Day9 requests him to use a diff bnet id. Now whether the fake would agree to that without putting up a stink is another issue altogether.

lol wow, they put him in this league? sad.... poor tricia
This is gonna be awesome, the only problem with low level matches is that.... they can go on for a long time and have alot of down time. I'm not sure how this would work, but hopefully it will be entertaining.

The sad thing is I'm sure he has a diff account name, but is purposely using the megumixbear imposter one as a big taunt to her. Day 9 would not be amused.
yeah fake megumixbear and real megumixbear have had problems in the past and he would harass her. he also played with sorcery the hacker o.O and still does ;o whether or not he still hacks
Wow, this tournament is sheer awesomeness in it's nature.
However, it is truly pathetic that the website concerning a league with some of the biggest internet companies does not load :D -> Edit: Now it's working a bit
Day9 is fucking awesome <3 Looking forward to this.
haha one of the guys from google answers are so funny!
Whom do you fear most amongst the competition and why?
Microsoft. They will do whatever it takes to catch up to Google, like Bing copying our search results. They also have no fear of being hated, as they play the most obnoxious commercial on streams:
edit: ps anyone know how good these people are btw? Grandmasters, masters, diamond?

A few seem to be high masters. If you know anything about CSL, it's probably similar skill distribution.

Hi, I'm one of the players (and organizers) - the NATO in the first game of Microsoft vs Google. As far as skill distribution it ranges from team to team, but most players in the league are high diamond, low masters.
I've watched a few games and they have been entertaining. My only complaint would be that Day9 needs to use a better overlay to show who is on which team in the game as well as the current set standings etc. I just think it would be useful as a viewer! Good idea and looks like fun.
On July 06 2011 00:32 Merany wrote: I absolutely love the idea, seeing those big fat ass companies just having fun with some Starcraft is really cool. The teams photos look soooo badass!
As nameless and faceless as giant tech companies can seem, they are made up of employees that are people just like everyone else. You should see the trolling on the internal Microsoft SC2 email list...
I really hope this league rocks! Just think about it, if a lot of people tune in to watch this league, all of these companies will see that. Then, they may realize that eSports is really starting to take shape, and then may decide to join in once they see how big the community is.
I have to hand it to Day[9] though, he could have easily gotten a few sponsors and put on just another normal tournament… But this is a team league with big name companies participating. Even though the players may not be the best, it is a very imaginative idea. The verdict of whether it turns out good or bad is still up in the air, but we all should at least make an effort to get the league off the ground. It's a great opportunity to help others see how great eSports is!

I hope this works out, as it's definitely a step in a new direction. The only concern I have with it is that, unlike college sports, you don't really feel attached to a company team. I root for Minnesota because I attend the U of M. I share the joy of victory and the pains of defeat with thousands of other people. I'm curious to see if this will generate any similar interest, or if the intent is to simply get these companies to promote SC2 (which would be fantastic in its own right).

Come on, are you saying you don't feel personally attached to the tech products you use? If only Apple had participated I could REALLY show you an example of company loyalty.
I think this is a good idea, but i know that i won't tune into a single game. Maybe this is a test run before us having these big companys picking up sc2 teams? Just doesn't appeal at all to me at all.

That seems to me to be a rather biased interpretation of what I do. I do not go around Bnet saying "hi guys, I'm tricia^^" or anything like that. I'm not some crazy psycho who just randomly picks on people for no reason, either. I've been in the community quite a long time, and there are distinct reasons for why we ended up in this situation but I did not with other people in the past. Day[9] is welcome to request whatever he wants, but I'm not going to use a different account name just because of who his friend is. It's the account I play by far the most on, my friends play with me on it, and the account is my SC2 presence. If he chooses to ban me from it, I would question what I did to actually deserve it - I'm not harassing anyone in his league (and I never tried to pretend that I am her when I submitted my application or account info) and I'm following all the rules to my knowledge. You can't admin a league by letting your own personal dislikes / friends affect your judgment.

Just to make sure people are clear about what you're saying, I have never hacked, nor to my knowledge have I ever had serious accusations (beyond the random accusations everyone inevitably gets) of being a hacker. Yes, Sorcery (who, believe it or not, is a friend of mine and who I did, after struggling with the issue, forgive for his past) hacked in the past - I do not believe he currently hacks, and I'd rather not derail the topic about AHGL with some great drama bomb about myself and him.

Well that's rather interesting reasoning. Why would you want your online presence to be that of someone else? That would be like me making a Day9 or EGIdra account and claiming cause I play on those accounts a lot, that is now my online presence.
Megumi isn't a progamer so who knows what will happen, but I'm pretty sure leagues wouldn't let a person sign up with a Day9 or EGIdra id.
I just watched the first game on Day9's site. Really good stuff and it's an interesting change of pace.
I don't know much about the drama with the name stealing or whatever, so can someone tell me why I should care about megumixbear in the first place? She just seems like a random masters level streamer who gets lots of attention because she's a girl who plays SC2 at a good level.
Wow, I just started working at Microsoft last Monday. I really wish I could've had a chance to play in this league, sounds like it would be so much fun! Good luck to Microsoft and all the other teams! This is such a great community event.

You should look up the Starcraft 2 distribution list on http://fim and join the community! Welcome to Microsoft!
Eh watched a game and wasn't super impressed. I expected great players/games, or bad players where the game is fun to watch because of it. Instead you kinda get middle ground games from diamondish players.
I got a copy of SC2 on the first day of the Beta (I won one of TL’s SC1 tournaments that had it as a prize). I started SC1 about 6 months after it was initially released as I recall and was basically active ever since until the retail release of SC2 (even though I had SC2 beta, I didn’t devote myself to it, and quit the beta for months at a time). I was on a bunch of top non-Korean teams and got pretty involved in the community, including being a moderator on teamliquid. With the release of SC2, I basically re-evaluated my priorities and decided to entirely depart from the SC2 community and focus just on my own personal aspect of gaming. Being heavily involved in the community can be fun, but it ends up eating up a lot of time that these days I simply don’t have in order to give; I prefer these days to spend my SC2 time actually playing team/UMS games, as opposed to dealing with administration issues. I am still a member of TL, and post occasionally, but I haven’t logged into my former moderator account for many months, and I don’t keep contact with any of the people I knew in that phase of my life.
Gooooooooo Microsoft -- I bet Microsoft would win an intern league too. (AHEM) ;p Although I'm not sure how I feel about insane playing as megumixbear -_-

This is the part I don't really understand about the AHGL. These guys don't have control over anything, they are techie nerds just like the rest of us, they just happen to work for those companies. Correct me if I'm wrong but the only potential this league has to spread Esports to a greater degree than one with pro gamers is if this league is picked up in the mainstream press somehow. Personally I don't see how having those companies' names associated with the league is going to garner mainstream press coverage. Is this league going to be advertised on any of those websites? No...again it's just a bunch of programmers who happen to work for big companies. The connection between this league and the spread of Esports is vague at best to me.
Watched a few of the vods. I have to say, I'm impressed by Day9's ability to cast games that aren't being played by pros. It's not that the guys playing are bad, but they certainly make mistakes, and it would be really easy to focus on those mistakes while casting. Day9, in his true professionalism, makes sure to simply praise the players for their good decisions and keep on rolling. Nice work.

Needs to be picked up by the mainstream press? I'm on it!
I don't think you understand how the world works. There are hundreds of corporate softball, basketball, and soccer leagues in the US alone. Playing in those leagues inevitably increases their participation as a spectator to the sport as well as other friends around them. Not only that, but it pushes games in general into better light as each of these teams probably has some level of permission and/or involvement from upper management to put their name in this tournament.
Believe it or not, but the growth of esports happens one person at a time, and this is what the league does.

You do realize that these "techie nerds" need permission to represent their company right? If the game is globally played by employees of large companies, that's a step in the door and we want that step.
We want to inch our way in every direction possible. While the move may seem small for now, consider what it can lead up to :3
You're trivializing things thinking they're realistic approaches rather than being optimistic and considering the overall view. Even if this gained nothing, there is no harm in doing this anyways.

Okay, so the growth of esports happens one person at a time. THe employees playing in the league and their friends will have their "participation in SC2 increased." Fair enough, but it doesn't address my point that pro gamer leagues are preferable to ones with employees from big companies. How are we getting the benefit of the big companies' names when only the employees playing and their friends are getting increased exposure?
Then you say that upper management gave permission for these people to form teams, which will help to cast SC2 in a better light. I doubt that the viewers of the league who don't know Starcraft (i.e., the new people the league is attempting to draw in) will give much thought to the companies' ensorsement of SC2. They'll just think it's fitting that tech company employees would wanna play a video game.
This is a big thing. Non-professional players pick it up for pride. This league should get SC2 more into mainstream and should generate a positive image for the game. Not just nerdy game for kids, but just the game.

Did the XFL do well? Do you think another league for basketball or baseball would make the sports more popular than they are? Right now, the SC2 crowd is saturated with invitationals, tournaments, and proleagues to the point where keeping up with the results of each would constitute a full-time+ job. Pros literally have to pick which of these they want to put effort into participating in, and you want there to be another one?
You may think that this league only affects a small group of people involved, but it goes beyond that. It generates buzz, questions, and curiosity both within the public and within the company.
Most of all, the whole idea is about connecting people who enjoy competitive video games. A guarantee most people on teamliquid.net did not know about the robust Korean BW scene before SC2 came out. Most of them probably spend countless hours on BW, but never knew that it was an actual sport in Korea. This is how it is for a lot of people who play video games. They play them alone or with a very small group of friends, without seeing what's just behind the curtain if they look a little harder. These people go to school and work without realizing that there is a huge community RIGHT around the corner that enjoys playing the same game(s).
When competitions like this pop up, it motivates those involved to branch out and look for people around them that could participate. CSL motivated my university's club to actively seek more members. They made fliers which eventually caught my eye and I was introduced to the whole community. You saw in this very topic where an employee of MS realized there was a Starcraft 2 group he could be a part of! Things like that happen every day when normal people are given the chance to compete along lines other than "I play this game 10 hours a day for a living," but rather "I'm a(n) ___________ for 10 hours a day, but play a game on the weekends." This is how spectators are formed in the hundreds instead of the dozens.
Honestly, I'm trying to lay out why the expansion of Starcraft 2 leagues and esports into the normal world, but if you can't see how the league inherently does that, I'm not sure if my words will either.
Amazing initiative, but with so many pro-tech companies i would expect a bit better website.. Horrified by their youtube video I expect it to get better soon, but as first impressions go - could have been better.
Still, thats a sidenote - gl with everyone involved!
Sean really is a genius. This move by him is just so incredibly well thought out and focused. Best of luck with this endeavor and here's hoping these companies take a further interest in helping to grow western e-sports.
Universities and companies sometimes have sports teams and they fight for prestige. In comparison, a computer game is often viewed as just a computer game. You can play with your computer to kill time. It is an activity which requires maybe fast mouse clicking but no real effort and practice. I don't think that good computer games belong in that corner. It is real sports. I am glad that this league exists and makes the first step.

Any one hiring?
Though that question being semi serious and sarcastic at the same time, i still have to congratulate day9 for putting something this crazy and brilliant together.

I understand that SC2 skill has nothing to do with applicable job skills, but your question gave me an idea. What if one of these companies held their own tournament and gave away a job to the winner? I know there are a million and one "problems" with that idea, but I'm at least curious as to the turnout they would get.

True but i do have a degree and graduated about a year or so ago and have been applying away lol.
Though a tournament for a job would be kind of awesome... i would be first in line, or sign up... or however it goes down.

You using a girl's screenname itself is creepy and causing confusion. Surely you aren't ignorant enough to deny this. This represents Microsoft poorly. Do your company a favor and get out of the drama circle. Just a recommendation.

Each company chooses the company they want to support should they win. This information is on the team page. For instance, Microsoft supports Amnesty International, which can be seen here http://afterhoursgaming.tv/teams/microsoft/.

Alright, so I have a question. Facebook team keeps on mentioning a guy called Marcel but looking at the roster on the site, there is no guy called Marcel. Who is Marcel?

Yeah that whole explanation was about as clear as mud, especially when the charade continues with those comments in-game.
As someone slightly in the software industry I love this, my tiny suggestion would be have company logos (possibly like the day[9] one at the bottom but smaller, up near the player names) for extra cred and so I don't continually forget which team is which.
Also speaking of players Tito looks like a total baller. His pic on the after hours gaming site looks like its straight from some bush doof or the American equivalent. Also his linkedin account is awesome with huge nerd cred and this line "I work on the DoubleClick For Publishers java thing."
Just heard about this from Sotg, really nice initiative and will be supporting all of the teams all the way, and this will help not only big companies to perhaps pay more attention to Starcraft but also continue the charity events that have been pretty amazing thus far ^_^
Edit: For all those curious, the first matches have already been played and the Team Standings are showing the results: http://afterhoursgaming.tv/standings/
Just made me think of a bad movie where companies have like a softball game and start hiring professionals as fake employees just so they can win, however that sounds fucking awesome for sc2.
This is way too cool. Deserves a lot more attention than it's getting. Supporting Google all the way, I mean, the one google player even has a TL shirt on!
Ugh! I want my real internet now so I can watch the VODs! Guess I'll just have to watch them tomorrow while "working." All of you tech companies must be conspiring to see how little you can get people to work during the day.

Haha. Yeah, I watch them at home, at work, whatever.
Only 2 more weeks left. Added a link to the op to rate the match ups each week. Looking at the schedule we have Google vs Amazon in week 7, August 17th. They are currently tied in the standing. Gonna be an important 2 weeks!!
Is it bad that I cringe while watching these? I also don't really like how this is played out. Some of these guys have been playing for like a week, and some of them have been playing since Beta/Launch, there's a huge difference in skill and quite honestly, it makes for bad games.
On August 18 2011 13:16 Garnet wrote: They are employees from those companies?
Yep. Thats the catch behind this league. It's trying to show how many people play sc2 and that all these big companies have people that play. Hopefully it sparks interest from new sponsors and only helps the community.
Heh ya some games you can see the level of play isn't quite professional but thats why they work at these companies instead of play sc2 for a living :p !!
You can find brackets here. If anyone watched tonights semi final between Google and Zynga and remember the maps, scores, and players please PM the info so i can update the liquipedia. Or update it yourself if you want!
While the games are not all tip toppity grandmasters level day 9 easily compensates with his world class commentary, and the idea in general is good at least in theory for moving towards the mainstream.
