Winner between
(T)MMA vs. (T)MarineKing
+ Show Spoiler +

(T)MMA – ‘I am filled with gladness because I am now on the stage that I’ve been dreaming about.’
[image loading]
- Your thoughts on making the finals?
Now I can see with my own eyes which was previously only something I have been dreaming about, my heart feels like it is jumping out of my chest because of this opportunity to play my games on such a stage.

- Once again, you had a comeback win today.
I have only played a best of 5 twice before. Since I don’t have a lot of experience playing them, I was definitely lacking in how I planned out the series. I feel like I lost the 1st set too easily. Starting with the 3rd set, coach Cella and BoxeR came into the booth and helped me calm my mind. Had BoxeR not come today, it is very possible that I would not have won.

- What did BoxeR tell you?
He told me about Marineking’s various builds and habits, and asked me to use watchtowers more effectively. He also told me that because this is a fight of concentrations, I should fight on until the very end.

- When did you know you had won in the 3rd set?
(**T/N: I believe MMA is talking about the 4th set…) I thought I was in a good position, but when my siege tanks were taken out by the marauders so I was a bit panicked for a moment. When Marineking took the gold expansion and turned his marauders around, I knew that as long as I got them, I would win.

- How were you able to win the 5th set?
I did not specifically practice the build for the 5th set. I thought that I would just go with the flow if it went to 5. Marineking’s style doesn’t involve a lot of scouting that I thought I could do pretty much anything. But Marineking decided to use the same strategy he used against me on Crevasse the last time, I told myself that I wouldn’t lose to the same thing twice so I build multiple bunkers to hold then win the game.

- Marineking claimed that he had found your weakness.
I have thought about my weakness, but I can’t figure it out. I don’t think he was able to exploit it that much today. I hope he can help me find my weakness next time.

- Has your confidence risen even higher?
I cannot believe that I am in the finals now, when I imagine winning the whole thing I believe it will be a memory in my 20s that I can never forget. Ga-yeon told me that today’s match was not about Marineking vs. Me but rather a match between a SlayerS terran vs. a Prime terran. I will make sure to show not only my own strength but that of our team to win the championship.

- SlayerS does not have a (individual league) champion yet. How are they helping you practice?
The atmosphere at the team house is like that of a family so we help each other out all the time. I can even get help from players on other teams. fOu’s GuMiho practiced with me like it was his job. I am really thankful. I will make sure to buy him something tasty. TSL’s Heart also worked hard practicing with me.

- Your opponent in the finals will be another terran.
I know both players pretty well so I can’t say which one I would prefer to face. I can’t even predict the outcome. But no matter who advances, I will make sure to prepare my best against him.

- It will be a best of 7 in the final.
BoxeR has the most experience out of any of us, so I will get a lot of advice from him and prepare my match accordingly to show my best skills.

- How will you practice for the finals?
I will practice for the LG special league first, then practice my basics. I believe I can still improve on my fundamentals.

- Any last comments?
I want to thank Ga-yeon, BoxeR, and coach Cella. BoxeR came to the stadium today and was big source of strength for me. I am really thankful to him. BoxeR has advanced to the NASL grand finals (16 player playoff), I hope he can go there and make our team even grander on the world stage.

(T)Polt – ‘For the finals, I will rest my body.’
[image loading]
- Your thoughts on making the finals?
I am really excited.

- Did you predict in the beginning of this tournament, that you would be in the finals?
Since I needed to earn some money, I thought to myself that I would at least need to beat LosirA. After all that, somehow now I am on this stage.

- Does this tournament feel different than the previous ones?
I think luck has been following me. I have gotten many maps that I like, and since I am thinking positively, my games have been playing out well too.

- You fought a tough match today.
I lost to a mech build on Xel’naga caverns. Since Terminus is also a good mech map, I tried to end the game quickly in the early game. Today, I believed in myself always and used many builds designed for longer games and through that I have gained a lot of confidence with this win.

- PRIME terrans are not really known for mech play.
There aren’t many people who can use them very well. I think that is why it is tough to practice using it. But since oGs has players like Nada who can use mech effectively, I did think about preparing for such inevitabilities.

- The most memorable set?
The 4th set. I was behind, but I was able to turn it around and deliver the final blow which made me gain a ton of confidence.

- You have been a progamer for a while, has your mindset changed recently?
If I were to say I was playing more casually before, now with all these fans watching me, I would say I am practicing and playing just as hard as every other gamer out there.

- This is your first finals.
Our team doesn’t have a champion yet, so I really want to win. I also want to take revenge for Marineking.

- What were your thoughts when Marineking lost the first match today?
I think it was tough for him because he lost after having a commanding 2:0 lead. I hope that he doesn’t take that to heart too much and plays even better the next time. Even after my 4th set, Marineking was still here cheering for me, he was a big source of strength.

- You will be facing MMA in the finals.
People think my TvT is weak, but I do not believe that it is. I suppose it may seem like it as compared to my TvP, but if you look at it objectively, it isn’t weak by any standard. MMA has been playing a lot of TvTs recently, but as for me I have not, which means that my strategies have not been revealed as of yet. I predict that whoever comes into the match with better builds and mental strength will be the victor.

- Will marineking help you out for this match?
I will practice hard for this match. I will make sure to come with a definite solution for mech play. I am confident in my bionic play so as long as I can stop the mech play I believe I can win. (**T/N: did not answer the question…)

- You will be a bit behind in big stage experience.
I believe as long as I work on my fundimentals, I can get over that fact. This was my first semifinals today and although I was shaking a bit, I was able to win. It will be ok as long as I win.

- Are you greedy for the money?
Of course. After the round of 8, I have been thinking that “this is the tournament for me.”

- People are giving the advantage to your opponent.
From the round of 64, I have beaten LosirA, Alicia, and TOP to get here. Every time, people have thought that my opponent would prevail. Since I have beaten all of them, I believe that this match is once again possible for me. When my opponents are favored, I try to play and turn that prediction upside down. And of course, when I am favored, I play thinking that I should win the match hands down.

- You will have some time before the finals.
I am glad. It has been hard for me to play so many matches in quick consecutive days. I am going to rest my body for the finals.

- If you were to compare this to an important test?
The stage is different and there are people watching, so it will be even more nerve-wracking than a test.

- Your opponent will have BoxeR’s coaching.
I have Marineking on my side. He has experienced more finals than any other player (in SC2) so he will be a big help to me.

- Marineking said after his round of 8 match that he had found MMA’s weakness, but he still lost.
His (Marineking’s) strategic choice in the last set was disappointing. If he was a bit more patient I think he could have easily gotten a better result. I think he got too impatient because MMA caught up. I was busy preparing for my match so I don’t know what he practiced, but if it was the usual Marineking, he would not have lost like that.

- You must be pretty famous at your school.
Everyone in the department knows me. I think most people who are interested in games at the school know me as well. Sometimes it becomes a topic in the school community. But I am just glad to have taken care of my tuition with my prize money this time.

- Any last comments?
I want to thank NSHoSeo’s Jjakji and fOu’s players who Choya set me up with for helping me practice. I want to thank sC especially for his great help. Since we ate well together yesterday, I hope you can help me again in the future. I guess I will need to buy more snacks next time.
+ Show Spoiler +

Polt was very promising back in his wc3 days, getting into some MBC leagues, and suddenly he disappeared. Guess that was the time for university then

That's why Polt had some sub-standard results earlier. However, having finished his studies, he can devote more time to SC2 which explains his very good record recently.

Polt fighting!!! Someone go and make a fanclub for him!

More TvT overrepresentation in a GSL final... yeah... not gonna bother watching this one.

Lost my taste for the current season when this scrub Top takes out Nestea with repeated marine-spam-a-move despite his terrible unit control. What a joke.

Damn, both of them are a nice guys, i hope its gonna be an amazing TvTs. Specially if MMA do his trademark "i let you gain advantage only to destroy you 15min later".

I'm psyched for the finals. Much rather watch a great TvT than anything involving zerg, as the live reports get spammed by balance whine.

Also Top a-moved to victory against Nestea? Lol you need to grow up and drop some of that fanboyism.

There were some people complaining about balance in the LR thread today, even though it was 4 terran players. Idiots will be idiots. >_>

I predict that whoever comes into the match with better builds and mental strength will be the victor.

He's planning to beat MMA by relying on builds (against MMA's raw multitasking and execution power) and being mentally stronger (against a player who pulls out comebacks for fun)? Really Polt? =P

Oh dear, if that's what he thinks going into the finals, I change my 4-2 prediction into a 4-0 for MMA.

lol, just GTFO. I'm a protoss player who root for Alicia the most but MKP vs MMA was really exciting. Not the Top vs Polt tho

But Nestea lost to a better players with better strategy. You can't deny that Zerg's fanboy.

MMA's going to take this one down pretty easily... Polt's play was not all that impressive today. He seems like a nice guy, but his multitasking and late-game decision making were not that great (letting TOP catch up in SCV's twice?? Huge blunder)

I'm sorry but Top did absolutely nothing to deserve that win other than exploit the same timing pushes that have been around since the beta. They work because marines are such a powerful unit that massing them grants you a 50/50 win chance even against a vastly superior opponent.

All I saw was the two-time GSL champion struggling against the matchup's awful mechanics when facing a mediocre opponent who executed but a single build decently.

??? what kind of crack are you smoking??

Nestea lost because he made the wrong reads on TOP's builds and had poor defense vs harass. Classic Nestea would perfectly predict what his opponent is doing and have the perfect reaction. That day he did not, he lost the mind games or whatever. Either way, he lost because of his own mistakes, BO-losses, etc... not due to TOP 1-a'ing his marines anywhere. You can't even 1a marines in TvZ because banelings will just blow them all up.

-

Anyway, Polt is underrated but somehow it feels like Bisu vs Savior here in the finals. One guy has good strategy, nice timing and decision-making but the other guy has supreme multi-tasking and an overwhelming arsenal of harass.

Personally MKP is probably better than MMA in straight up games like MLG or LAN events. But with Boxer/Cella and his team, MMA got the advice and encouragement that he needed to adapt and beat MKP's style. This gives him the edge vs the lonewolf Polt who practices from home.

I hope Polt wins so that all the haters have to eat their words. Honestly, I haven't seen such irrational hatred for a player since...hmm..maybe ever. BitByBit is universally reviled because of his cheese tactics. Polt is actually really skilled and people still think he is bad for some reason.

The GSL needs to seed the early rounds of the tournament better to avoid these endless mirror-matches. I know that I'm not paying for the next tourney until it's concluded and I can see that there will be a decent number of matches for me to enjoy from it. The three races are roughly equal in player-base; seems like bad business for a GSL tourney to lose 2/3 of its viewers' interest before the semi-finals.

Irrational hatred? Really?

I don't think we're reading the same threads. Then again, it's kind of a trend for people to respond to imaginary "hate" lately just for the sake of having a heated up discussion.

Interesting that both players credit fOu players for helping them practice. I would have thought more training was within-team, but it often sounds like they practice pretty broadly in the post-game interviews.

I feel like I've seen players crediting fOu in the past as well. They must be a good team for general support and community building.

I wonder if that will get less common if they start feeling like they are competing for sponsorships in Korea.

I'm liquibetting Polt for the finals, but hoping for more great games. I liked all 4 players in the semis and thought the games were generally very strong (too bad about the banshee mismicro in the last game for oGsTOP). Or course, I play terran, so I get to watch the games and just enjoy them without having the need to complain about imba.

Too bad MMA doesn't have a "Bisu build" up his sleeve. And Polt is the definition of harassment.

Polt is coool. He goes to a top uni in Korea and still pwning nubs. Glad to see he gets to practice with guys like sCfOu.

Too bad Polt gets so much hate in every single LR threads. I don`t understand the hate either. People are just pissed he knocks out their favorite players(MC, Huk). He is a consistent performer in GSL. He doesn`t usually finish high but he can hang with Code S players for sure.

Now that a think about it, koreans have so many damn top tier terran players.

I've been reading that thread (can't watch streams on work) during the actual games, and noticed probably no more than 5 posts that could MAYBE, at a stretch, be categorized as "irrational hatred". And most of them were during the actual games where people will generally post all kinds of shit due to excitement and cheering for their player. It's not like MMA vs MKP was any different in that regard (or most other games).

On the other hand, I've noticed so many posts pretty much taking pity on Polt and "defending" him against some imaginary witch hunt... I don't really know.

Unless you're interpreting not being too excited about Polt as a finalist (or in general) and not considering him the greatest player (and person) in the world for getting there as "hatred". In which case, I... would be speechless. =P

Some of the posts are hate, but most of them are irrational apathy. It's stuff like:

- "MMA will crush him, he's so much better" (irrational, most people here don't understand how Polt is winning because he doesn't impress them so they conclude he's average)
- "Polt has bad macro" (not true either, but most people here are brainwashed with the concept that you have to be constantly producing workers all the time to have good macro)
- "Polt's only here because his opponents played like crap" (at points this is true, but it applies to every player who ever played in a tournament)
- "Polt's not that good of a player" (somewhat ironic since his record since season 2 rivals that of Bomber or MMA)

I find it annoying that one of the best terrans in the world atm gets literally no recognition for his wins. There's always some excuse or qualifier attached to any praise whatsoever. People also talk about MMA like this and it bugs me as well.

I disagree with this. There's a difference between a build order loss, being cheesed, losing to superior macro, mechanics, etc, than a player who is simply having an off day. That's not to say I agree with the original statement, but that's my thoughts.

If you watched supply counts, even in the games where MMA did his hidden/fast expands, he would fall behind often against MKP in the first 5 - 10 minutes. Mostly it was because he was trying to tech so just couldn't get anything out, but when his initial aggression was deflected he was in big trouble (he was even behind supply when executing the ghost rush).

I thought MKP would abuse those early game advantages more, but then again like game 5 showed, when MMA suspects early aggression he knows how to play defensive.

Not to say that MMA's bad or anything, but I think the Semi-Finals preview said it best, MMA tries to survive into the mid-game where he can maneuver his way to a win. So that might leave an opening? I dunno, if it does, and maybe I'm being a doubter but I don't think Polt is going to be the one to show us.

Boxer with the imba pep talk. And giving MMA some advice that a "certain player" would be smart to heed:

"He also told me that because this is a fight of concentrations, I should fight on until the very end."

He definitely could have defended the harass better but "classic Nestea" was not a mind reader. Even a player who always made the best possible choices in response to the limited information available to him would still occasionally get BO disadvantages if not losses. This is why tournaments aren't decided by Bo1s.

How would leaking information to Prime.WE help fOu in the slightest?

I am not so sure Polt matches up well to MMA. While Polt has excellent decision making and unit control his macro leaves something to be desired. He often harassed well and then lost the SCV lead he had gained. This was on multiple occasions mind you. I think MMA will overcome him in any macro game.

That's not a slip in macro. That's Polt's playstyle.

Polt gets a lot of hate. Go to the LR thread and look for yourself. There are maybe 5 people who actually admit he earned his wins.

Well it can bother you (although it's kind of silly that it does, to be honest), but it's nowhere near as bad to be referred to as irrational hatred.

I also think MMA is easily better than him and that he will likely sweep him in the finals, that Polt is an average Code S player, and that his macro isn't too convincing. I most definitely don't think he's one of the best Terrans because of his tournament run or recent results. I personally base my opinion on players on actual games, never on statistics and results (especially not in SC2). Polt's gameplay just doesn't stand out in my eyes at all, and it's most certainly not the gameplay of "one of the best Terrans in the world" (unless we're talking about something like 20 best Terrans, in which case he fits in that category).

From what I can gather from that post, you seem to expect everyone to be super excited that Polt made the finals and to be impressed and outspoken about it and heap praise onto him, and when this isn't the case, take it as personal offense then go on some defensive crusade and accuse people of irrational hatred just because they aren't impressed by somebody or they think another player is better. THAT is actually irrational.

I've been reading a ton of posts about how MKP is going to 3-0 MMA, or how it's "his tournament" the moment NesTea was knocked out (and same was said about NesTea prior to that). It never occurred to me to interpret that as hate, but I was mildly amused by how wrong they are. =P

Almost brought me to tears :')
