Thanks guys for the write up.

For the record: the single player looks really interesting. I know there'll be a lot of multiplayer whining and Brood War "Games are better with rose tinted rear view mirrors" whining, but single player is a large part of what drew me into WoL.

Blizzard don't write games like Bioware, they are simply interesting with some believable characters, good cutscenes and some interesting developments.

I don't see why people are reacting so badly? I think "lolfanshatingtheirownfranchiseforreleasinganewgame" attitude sums it up. Similar sentiments pop up every time a new game comes around from fans. I don't get these sort of people, why aren't they just playing Chess because all other tactics games don't do things better?

I suppose that's a typical Blizzard way of thinking and was to be expected, but nevertheless it's great news. However I don't think a lot of the units that I think aren't as cool don't fit with Blizzard's ideas. Basically most zerg units I feel are pretty uninspired/bland, or some have extremely limited/situational uses.

Ultralisk/hydralisks I'm most concerned about, though I've issues with the boring design/lack of micro options that BW had with most of the other units as well. I really dislike the current design of the hydralisk, high cost but low hp and slow move make for just a terrible combination, it's not fun to use, you can't really micro due to their slow move, fast attack speed, and fast death.

In BW you could actually make a lot of use from microing hydras...dodging storms, getting good positionings/spreading quickly, flanking, pulling hurt units to the back. And they were cheap and expendable and weren't so incredibly hard countered by any units. In BW, storm was the strong 'counter' to hydras except that good micro could greatly lessen the effect...colossi don't care how you try to micro them, they always melt them regardless.

Ultras have similar problems, they are easily hard countered and their extremely high cost turned suddenly useless by some immortals. They need to steer away from units that suddenly become useless because your opponent was able to get X. I like however the ultralisk in zvz currently..it's vary frightening and there's no really strong/easy answer to them, which is how the ultimate expensive unit should feel...well provided the game gets to that stage which is rare.

damn this is just the tip of the iceberg, i could write a book on my issues with sc2..but that's for another thread. I really do hope Blizzard agrees with at least some of these things


With all due respect .. I thought relentless bashin of SC2 or BW by other community was a bannable offense on Team Liquid. This is a preview of the single player campaign of HoTS and you use the oportunity to bash SC2 WoL multiplayer?

If you dislike SC2 so much .. how about you stick to moderating the BW section instead of shitting up(how you mods usualy describe this kind of behaviour) SC2 threads?

People who like things tend to not post on forums about it. It's easy to get a warped sense of the reaction to something from reading forums.

Adding and removing units? Oh shit here we go. This could be a great move or a terrible one, we'll have to see.

Sounds too similar to the zerg brood war campaign for me to get excited. I had thought with them splitting the game up into three parts Blizzard would really take a creative look on how to craft a story, instead it simply seems to be rehashing ideas from their previous games with little to no consequence in how you choose to play your missions. Hopefully the plot isn't condensed into 8 or so campaign missions this time.

Their answer to the question on LAN is an absolute joke, same with the marketplace.

Overall buying HotS will hinge on how much better the multiplayer is. I certainly won't be spending $60 for an average single player experience and very limited multiplayer changes.

I have to agree. Mods, especially those with huge love for BW, seem to post quite alot of really questionable stuff about SC2. Going on a tangent about how much better BW is than SC2 in a TL thread about SC2 expansion single player preview is kinda weird.

A: Are you talking about in broodwar, or are you talking about why they did it in WoL? We're not sure about the original game - for that particular moment in WoL we were expressing a pretty radical concept to Zera'tul; the fact that the overmind was not what he thought that it was, and we needed someone that he would really believe, someone that he would buy into almost immediately - we didn't have a cutscene or a ton of time to get it across, and it was believable to us that he could still be out there in one form or other. The character need to immediately allow Zera'tul to believe and understand what was going on, without a lot of backtalk.

A: We typically don't provide details about pricing until the game is closer to release. We do view Heart of the Swarm as an expansion set, so for the regions that have a standard box business model such as North America and Europe, we will price accordingly.


Makes me believe that the expansion won't be priced at $60. WoW expansions were like $30 and they had probably as much content as this expansion if not more.

Nice write up.

I'm praying they remove the Roach, Marauder and Corrupter and replace them with something more interesting. They're seriously the most uninspired units ever created, they have no interesting mechanics in my opinion.
