San might not have been as bad as people claimed him to be, but he really wasn't good by any means.
Untill this season that is, now he is completelly legit high level player, one of the best Protosses out there, even though he doesn't seem to play as well as he did in the group stages.
Oh and San seems to really hate Colossus, he never seems to make them unless he really has to, which makes his style rather unique and fun to watch.

GSL is so boring for a while now because everyone play so normal and solid. San just did something great last night by playing macro game with so many storms vs SC so many EMP. Expand everywhere. Harass the entire game. It's so fun to watch. It likes watch Stork storm playing in BW. =>Those games aren't clean but they are so so entertaining compare to other games during this GSL.

He started out this season without any hopes at all since he intended to join the army after he got knocked out. Nerves is a big issue, especially when your games are being broadcasted across the world. San has never been terrible but hes a mediocre player at best.
I think a lot of his success this season has been due to the fact that everyone tried to avoid guys like MVP, Nestea and MC. Of course,, Nestea picked San since he expected an easy win because San's performance has been lackluster and probably underestimated him immensely. None of San's opponents have been the scary great names, except for Nestea and a lesser extent Boxer so after the group stage he hasnt really faced any of the favorites.
I think San has what it takes to become a top player, but at the moment hes very sloppy and predictable. He barely deviated from his build at all in the match today against SC and used basically the same unit comp in all games, and he got lucky since SC did the same. I dont think the series today was as amazing as others thought. San is a smart player but hes still lacking in some areas.
Anyway, reaching the top 4 is still a great achievement and no one expected him to do this well in the code S tournament, so obviously he deserves some respect. However, I dont think he can beat MC in the semis, and I'd personally find an MC vs July rematch in the finals more interesting and exciting than San vs anypro or July.
I agree that he was probably a lot more relaxed since he didn't have huge expectations going in. However, it's not really fair to say that he had an easy group because people were trying to avoid Nestea. After all, Nestea picked first and so no one was given the choice to "avoid" the group. Plus, he was picked as the weakest player (which means other weak players would have gone to other groups) and he picked based off of wanting to play against a legend instead of picking the next weakest player. I mean, it's true he hasn't climbed over the bodies of every previous GSL winner, but no one ever has to do that. Isn't beating Nestea, Boxer, Ensnare, TheWind, and Sc (the guy who took out MKP and Tester) enough?
That being said, I do agree that he still needs to work on his early game and his micro isn't perfect. Still, he's much better than anyone gave him credit for.

whats most impressive is that hes just been playing for fun intil now.. i dont find his recent develpment (which almost everyone agrees on) that strange considering that he havent been taking the game seriously until just now.
probably its because the terrible beats he got last season, even though not being a fan by any means i felt soo bad for san when inca cheesed him. it was so sad to see a nerdy underdog being made fun of by the schoolyard bully

A lot of the illusion of san having questionable army control last night stims from the fact that he was using units to spot for feedbacks in the absence of being able to use an observer because a raven was in play. His army control and over arching decision making was quite good, and he is totally right to induce a slugfest when he's up on bases.

His gameplay is quite interesting, but can he beat MC?

San fighting! Granted I haven't have had a season ticket once as of yet, I haven't seen all the games, but I do follow the GSL closely and needless to say, I have taken a liking to San. Am rooting for him against MC. lol

San's micro/overall play is just slop...

San used to do silly things, like go for a forge expansion and manner block his own nexus.
He's gotten better, but he has nothing on MC.

Well he's certainly improved, but I'm still not particularly impressed. His play is pretty scrappy, and against sC he was basically just abusing Khaydarin Amulet to counteract every poor decision he made. His wins are kind of mysterious to me - much like choya, where it seems like he plays horribly yet he still wins the set somehow.

the reason why the majority of people viewed san as a jobber is the same as why the OP didn't make this thread until now, san just wasn't putting up the results. it's REALLY easy to defend san and make your point now that he's doing well and you can site his recent results to back up your claim. at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if a progamer exhibited solid allin defense in a bo3 this one time or lost a bo3 because of some silly mistakes, all that matters is results.

Before getting knocked into the up and down matches, he had a top 16/32/32... and he wasn't performing well? Idra was glorified as one of the most consistent players in GSL and has similar finishings. Pfft.
People will eat up anything they hear and that's how the media works.

OP .. Artosis used to say that San can't get past the 8 minute mark and that he is consistently one of the worst players in Code A and S simply because .. it was true :O !Artosis has a habit of exaggerating things but at the end of the day there was some justification to his comments; San used to exploit early game tactics to the fullest and provided less than impressive unit control.. I mean granted Artosis used to say that Nestea was nothing to be special because he was a Brood War B teamer - he has certainly proved that wrong..
This season it seems San has been able to prove himself; just shows what the team house environment can provide for a player.. His improvement has been great and it is awesome seeing him progress so far once a lot of the top dogs have been knocked out.. I hope to see more from him in the future

I never liked IdrA, still dislike him. He is overrated but not too overrated. He is may be top 5 foreign players but not in top for sure.

(albeit torch did almost make it into code A through the most recent qualifiers)
lol, how can you count ro32 twice? his ro32 in the code S january season was the result of him going out 0-2 in the first round of group stages, where there were only 32 players to begin with. that's like coming in second in a duel.

maybe the name resemblance to Sen is what got him so few credit

How can people say he has improved if you never even got to see his play.
He got cheesed hard, and choked in what amounts to a build order loss. Nobody got to see any actual play from him till this season. If anything has improved it would be his ability to handle the nerves and stress being on stage.

I'll quote myself, because I've been saying this since he got the the Ro8:

And now people are surprised that he beat a bunch of Terrans and Zergs????? He was undefeated against Terrans in series even since he was "the worst player ever", and he only lost to one zerg ever. San's PvP is what made him the worst player in the GSL, as that was the only match-up he lost, but he managed to play it almost every season early on. San's sudden burst in skill isn't that amazing, yes he has gotten better, but still, he hasn't faced a Protoss all this season, and that's the MU he is famously bad at. People are being realllly superficial is seems this season with the Kelly fiasco and praising San as a god. Yea he beat NesTea, in one game, once, that's it, and he was just 0-2 against Zergs up until then -- not really a good reference point to show that he is bad against zerg. : | AND Protoss is better in general than before.
TL;DR: San didn't improve that much if at all, Protoss in general did, he was only considered bad because of his PvP, which he managed to avoid this season. Emphasis on the all Protoss have been doing well

The depressing thing is that after 1.3 hits we won't be able to see that playstyle anymore. I will watch those VODs with a nostalgic tear in my eye after amulet is taken out.

San certainly improved a great deal but he's far from amazing. I still think he's Code A material, considering the number of good players that are coming up.
