Is there any reason Blizzard opted not to have a 3-second countdown or so before the game starts?
My computer is really slow, so even when the loading is finished and we are ingame, my pc still chokes a bit for the first couple of seconds. Not only that, but It is SO annoying having the camera fly away in one direction right when the loading is done (I know you can backspace, but still).
Also, any one who takes a game just a little bit serious, will be waiting in high anticipation throughout the entire loading process so that as SOON as the game is done loading, you set your harvesters to work asap so no precious time is lost.
Let us relax god damnit, instead of playing the reflex/whack a weasel game :D As soon as the loading is done and players are ingame, lock their camera to the base, but allow mouse movement, and then have a 3 second cooldown!
Another suggestion I want to hear your opinion about. Don't you think Blizzard should implement a "Training Mode" in addition to Custom & Melee (or maybe someone should make a custom map for this). My idea is that the "Training Mode" should be just the same as Melee, but where both players can at any point pause the game (infinite amount of times). Once the game is "paused" - both players are put into spectator mode, where full map vision is granted and full access to the same menus that spectators usually have to view Units building, resources lost etc. When your done with your pause, the game goes back to the state it was in before the pause. This would make learning timings and discussing strategy with your training partner so much easier as how it is right now, you either go through the replay once the game is OVER, or you discuss on Skype what is happening as the game is being played. Being able to pause > spectate > discuss, mid-game, on the fly with your friend would be a really cool feature imo.
Am I just dreaming or dont my 2 thoughts seem pretty legit / valid? Thoughts?

I didn't get the first part.
But the second one sounds nice

Replays are sufficient enough.

What he was trying to say was that once loading is done you istantly have control of your buildings and should start a action immediatly. He wants a small delay so slow computers can catch up and you can prepare to start your actions

get a better computer?

that can cost a lot of money, and though my computer is good there is still some momentary lag at the beginning of games sometimes. i actually really like the idea in the op, it seems reasonable enough. the first part of the op at least

Dunno about training mode but yes, the anticipation during the loading screen can get a bit annoying. They could change it up a bit and solve the problem. They won't thought. They definitely won't.

actually that is a really good idea with the countdown.

It's not a terrible suggestion--as it really wouldn't affect people WITH better computers, and would entertain the notion of satisfying more of Blizz's customer base (those with lower end computers). I like the idea.

i agree with the countdown. sometimes the first 1 or 2 seconds my computer lags a bit (but is fine for the first of the game) which fucks up my splits sometimes.
|
A countdown after loading seems completely reasonable and would only serve to improve the game, so why not?
On top of the lag issues, it would allow us to see where our mouse is and get situated.
|
I get a second or two freeze when a game starts as well, extremely annoying as some times it'll ignore the input to create a worker before I put my drones on minerals
|
so the practice thingy wouldnt be abused? hey, I'm pro in practice, I learned this new trick that you can pause and see their base then unpause
|
I guess if I am going to play devil's advocate on this one, I put this thought out there. During high level games, would having a 3 second grace period after the loading screen effect the development of the game since the player is able to calmly and clearly identify their spot on the map and adjust their plans accordingly. This is oppose to starting the game right away with the rush to be mine as fast as possible, get a clean split and maximize early economy while then attempting to gain your bearings?
|
This would also help those people who don't have mouse courser vision while loading! I have to use the control=ping option and spam control while loading so I know my mouse isn't off on the side of the screen or something weird.
It's probably just a matter of time until someone creates a "training mode" map where you can do pauses and get vision and things like that (probably including a "reset" and other convenient practice/training tools).
|
The countdown after loading is a great idea. My old computer used to run the game very well, never any slowdown, except for the first 3-4 seconds in which I always got about 2 frames per second.
My new computer is so fast that sometimes the loading screen goes so fast that I'm unprepared when the game starts. Most people don't have fast computer so usually it gives me some time, but every so often someone else has a fast loading computer.
So yeah, that would be awesome

Training mode sounds really nice.
As for your first problem, I have that lag too in my first game after opening up sc2. After that, there normally isn't any freezing in the beginning. Also because my graphics card isn't that great, I used to play on medium/high and the beginning "choke" was quite long, sometimes 10 ingame seconds or more... but turning down the graphics solved that.
|
100% agree on this. i dont lag but sometimes game takes ages to load cos opponents have shit comps and i lose concentration/do a bad split, an ingame countdown would help everyone.
training mode is a bit far fetched for the likes of blizzard imo. all the casuals would get confused and blame blizz for "wasting time implementing useless game modes" because thats what casuals do.

There would be no abuse because you wouldnt be playing in practice mode to start with, if you didnt know the guy. This would be for friends trying to improve!

Definitely hope so! I for one, would definitely put it to good use :D

Sorry my English is not that good to fully understand the Devils advocate thing ^^ But I'm guessing your saying you already had this idea and made a thread about it? In that case sorry, I did try searching to see if something like it existed :S.
But to continue with the idea, it would also be cool if in tournaments or games where one of the spectators has the "referee" status (what DOES that do anyway??), that instead of having a 3 second grace-time, it changes to being an "indefinite" grace time - until the referee clicks the START GAME button. That would allow major tournaments to get everyone ingame and the commentators can start discussing the map etc. etc. until the schedule says 9:00pm (as an example) where the game is set to start! That way we don't always have to watch that stupid game menu / lobby in between games but can actually get our hands dirty analyzing the map :D
Anyways glad to see people agree, and knowing it's not just me being a weirdo ^^

After you set your workers to harvest and build your next one there really isn't that much you do for a little. I know the pros like to spam but there's nothing you would have changed in the initial 30 seconds of the game because you know your starting location. I don't think getting your bearings sooner would affect anything tbh.

I don't know about the other stuff, but this I agree with 100%. I can't say how many games I've played where everyone's loading bar is at 100%, but one person's is actually sitting at 99.9999% with one pixel empty for a good 20 nerve wracking seconds.
Some buffer time in between would be nice for sure once everyone has loaded in.

The second idea sounds awesome for a custom map.

Countdown would be good, I never liked having to stay vigilant the entire loading process in case the somebody's load bar jumps through the last 40% and the game starts right away and you're like "oh shit i thought i had another 10 seconds at least *click* *s* *click-drag* *right-click* *click-drag* *right-click* *click* *ctrl+5* *right-click* *ctrl+f5* *click* *ctrl+f6* *click *ctrl+f7* *55* *enter* *gl hf* *enter*" all in less than a minute.

the countdown before the game is useless anyway.
its like: countdown 3...2...1.. LOADING TIME !!!........................ start game
having the countdown at the beginning of the game, already seeing your buildings and mouse cursor would be so much better!
|
I love this idea, especially the training mode. I think this would be so much better for analyzing replays with a cocaster especially. No more one two three ok go.
Also would make training sessions with coaches a lot more efficient imho.
As to the 3 sec delay, i am a big fan, seeing as how i play on a laptop...
|
Countdown at the start of the game means that, as a random player, I don't have to mash the entire left side of my keyboard to build a worker.

LOL! never thought about that since I play with the grid setup, but reading your post just made me laugh in rl, guess i cant complain :D
|
hold ctrl+f1 , when game starts your workers will be auto selected for easy mining and the camera doesnt fly away
|
ur solution is pretty good. either tht or have the countdown in the loading screen after everyone has loaded and let us see where the mouse cursor is! I personally build a worker first then split so its pretty annoying having the cursor on the side of the screen and scrolling my view at the start.
|
The idea of training mode sounds like a great idea. It could be really cool for coaches to be able to show player where they should be look when they play.
|
First idea sounds great, and I can't see any good reason not to implement it except for possible technical/workload for blizzard reasons. The other one seems like a neat thing, but not essential.
|
My computer always lags like hell for the first 3 seconds the first game I play when I load up SC2. After that, it's flawless. Keep in mind this is a godmode PC for this game.
Shit's annoying and uncalled for. A 3-2-1 START! wouldn't kill anyone.
|
I love this idea.
I don't have a slow computer, actually the opposite. My screen is typically loaded first before anyone else and so I just sit waiting around. By the time the game starts I sometimes am unprepared because I've just been waiting for everyone else to load, and also have sometimes had issues with my screen wildly scrolling to the other side of the map when the game starts. Having 2-3 seconds in game before the time starts would be awesome in my opinion
|
Both are excellent ideas!
The first is rather self-explanatory if you have ever experienced lag when a game first starts. If you keep getting this lag then take a look at your replays. You should notice that you consistently move your workers later than people who do not get this lag.
The second would really help getting more people into SC2 MP. A lot of noobs have a hard time learning the ropes or knowing what they are doing wrong and will just give up on MP 1v1. I know I have friends like that and it would be great to teach them basic/advanced lessons this way.
|
I don't lag at the beginning of the game as I have a reasonable gaming setup but especially at LANs on my laptop, having the 3 seconds for the graphics card to buffer and stabilise would be awesome. As long as it was the same as an unpause graphic I would be fine with it. I don't really see how starting the split within .3 seconds as opposed to .5 seconds would affect gameplay balance so I'm all for it.

Both are great ideas, especially the second one. I'd also like to be able to restart the game at any point in time while in "Training Mode".

Agreed with the idea. It happened to me more times than I care to remember: my cursor goes flying off to one side, because it's hidden during the loading screen. Not really a serious issue, but it's distracting. Haha, I just imagined having a Quake 3 announcer voice at the start of every game saying: "3... 2...1... FIGHT!"
|
those 1 or 2 seconds are not important. when i played wc3 ive even seen cases where progamers waited 3 seconds before they did their first action.
|
I agree with this, also want to throw in that, when you are zerg, on some spawn locations your overlord is almost directly over the middle of your hatchery, I've selected my overlord before and tried to make a worker and then flailed around like an idiot for a couple seconds deselecting the overlord etc.
|
I agree with this, and not for lag/delay reasons. Because load times vary by opponent there never seems to be a consistent real countdown. Sometimes the dude takes forever to load and so you get some time to focus, but sometimes it loads so quick you hardly have enough time to get ready. Yeah theres the lobby, but it hardly counts since right after the 'countdown' you have to wait once again.
|
I totally agree with having a countdown after the game has loaded. I get all uptight just waiting for the loading to finish lol.

Just for future reference, when someone is "playing devil's advocate" it usually means they are going to disagree for the sake of disagreeing or is taking a side of an argument that is counter to the general trend of the discussion. Like picking the "wrong" side just to pick it.

They put this in? NICE
I was worried they wouldn't have this high on their priority because I haven't seen many people ask or complain about it.
Really like this now :D Thanks Blizzard!
