Recently some members of oGs and fOu met up for the ultimate team battle - a soccer (football for all you overseaseigners) match! thisisgame.com uploaded some pictures from the event:
You want to know why MC is so good? He always scouts, even in soccer. Here he is, gazing over the field soon after the teams arrive.
As the teams start stretching, TheWinD shows that he is always willing to help his players. Definitely a good quality for a coach.
More oGs stretching, they are clearly very coordinated.
fOu stretches as well, but I'll be honest: at first I thought they were trying to choke one another, and I'm fairly confident that pair on the right is doing it wrong.
Hero[Shield] (check him out in the FXOPENIS final in less than 24 hours) is getting some help with his shoe issues. I'm having issues too, with his choice of socks.
Just before the game starts, the teams line up at midfield.
A shot of the oGs bench: from left to right, Hyperdub, somebody who looks really familiar but I can't quite think of, and I think Vines
The fOu bench - I'm afraid I can't identify any of them D=
Another shot of the oGs sideline, with HayprO, Cezanne, and TOP and his baller jacket.
Meanwhile on the field, the game is underway!
If I've learned anything about soccer, it's the inverse relationship between actual injury and how injured the player acts, so fear not, Zenio is just fine. I'm not sure why SuperNoVa is sitting around like that though, poor form!
LittleBoy reties his shoes, and Hero is simply exhausted.
During halftime, oGs regroups and refuels.
Play resumes! Judging by everyone else, the guy in the red jacket is looking in entirely the wrong direction.
Despite LittleBoy's best defensive efforts, and TheWind's goalkeeping, fOu scores! Ensnare, bud, I'm pretty sure standing there with your hands in your pockets isn't helping the cause.
MC in hot pursuit of a loose ball.
Zenio working hard at sparking a comeback.
TOP is made a fool of, but fortunately for him, the shot goes just wide.
Sadly, the best efforts of the oGs players are not enough, as they fall 3-4 to fOu. MC gives solace to LittleBoy afterwards, probably reminding him that both of them are at least .500 vs fOu players in tournaments.
The teams exchange post-game courtesies. If you choose to believe that they're forming that human tunnel that players run through and find orange wedges at the end, well, you're not alone.
The final group picture, with both teams together! Looks like a good time was had by all
damn, i thought it was a fight. shoulda known betta. But still, this is quite interesting. Koreans seems to take a liking to soccer (BW proteams and celebrities have their own soccer team).

I was thinking that too. I was like "well, they've finally done it, huh? A fist fight...". I hate being bated by misleading titles -.- Nevertheless, it was cute. Nice that they can socialize with other teams playing some football.
That was pretty cool. Never expected them to actually get together and player football together. I guess its great just to get out and do something different, even for starcraft players
Out of curiosity, what exactly brought out this event? Was it orchestrated by thisisgame.com or a friendly rivalry between the two teams? Definitely looking forward to seeing more of these if they occur.
Also,
Hero[Shield] (check him out in the FXOPENIS final in less than 24 hours)
Not to be immature, but is that really an appropriate acronym for the tournament?
Hah, I totally got caught by the title too "Oh no way, Gorilla Terran ACTUALLY FIGHTING? It's just a cheer guys!" but good to see it was just a normal soccer match

This is great and I'm really amazed at all the media coverage for progamers. I wonder if they even felt pressured since they knew they would be taken pictures of. Probably just the photgraphers are so good that the good coverage makes it feel like their game was... even staged, for the media xD
Either this was pretty cool haha. Where's Jinro though? =O And other Liquid peoples? Huk? Ret?

Awesome, I thought it was going to be a fight but a soccer match will do. I'm a fan of soccer and I approve of this, progamers can't sit in front of the computer all day long.

Yeah, Koreans love their soccer. I would believe that their national team is the most successful out of all the East Asian teams.

Yes, the stereotypically mild mannered Korean pro-gamers are going to fight. lol
It's actually really good to see these guys get outside and play some sport. Would of liked some footage, but ah well. Nice one.
As the first poster, I also got a little confused by the title, was happy to see it was just a friendly game of soccer though, great to also see these teams/players compete outsite their teamhouses. Unfortunately oGs lost, I think they left their naturally awesome football player from the Netherlands (yes I mean Ret), at home, that must be the reason! Nice photos

Pretty much everyone except The americans love the football (Das soccer) . When I was in China and Japan I saw pitches being buildt everywere. The pitch also looks surprisingly well made makes me wish that the ice would go away so I could start the outdoor training season ; (
There's no doubt that the thought of casting Forcefield on the goal did not go through oGsMC's head. And i'm pretty sure oGsNada attempted to activated stim during the match.

Hahaha that's awesome, just like like in hyung joon becomes a pro gamer where MBC Hero fights SK Telecom :D. Good to see this kind of team spirit, it strengthens the team as well. Well what to say i love football too like the rest of the world, it's just sad still to see that the americans haven't catched on yet heh.
Koreans love soccer, lol. If there was any activity on that grass field it would not look nearly as good :D. But it was not an optimal playing circumstance due to cold last month(s), I'll give em that much.

EVERYONE loves soccer, how can you not love such an amazing sport? The physics behind the control of the soccer ball make me so confused but the pro players can control the ball like a missile. The only reason the US hasn't accepted it yet is because American Football is king, and people do NOT like change, whatever university you go to you are bound to it by life and must cheer for them... unless they are losing of course

Makes me want to puke just thinking of all that running. Does anyone know if they work out during the week? Because if someone practiced SC2 for 10 hours a day I feel it would be hard to have the stamina to play a full soccer game. I will just have to assume they exercise regularly.

After watching soccer "football please." all my life it gets very boring. I much prefer watching american football to "football" now. So much more tactical and interesting game.

Not entirely sure if this has been mentioned before, not even sure if this is actually where it started, this is just an anecdote:
I recall watching Huk's stream a few days ago, and when he met a fOu member on ladder, he was talking with him at the start of the game, mentioning if they would like a oGs vs fOu soccer match...and the fOu player accepted Huk's request, and they would continue on joking about who is the best soccer player on their respective teams etc.

Firstly, good on to fOu & oGs! Really nice pitch to play on.
To the quoted post, I think you have the conceptions backwards. Soccer is the most commonly played sport in the USA, and by a huge margin. It's something like 80% of all 6 to 12 year olds have played organized soccer.
However, as a professional sport, Baseball far pre-dates organized soccer. At the turn of 1900, the collegian sports started to take hold in the US and slowly developed into the pro Football & hockey leagues we have now. The only major, organized sport to predate Baseball is actually Union Rugby. Which is where American Football is based from. We, however, developed the Forward Pass. That's mostly where that came from. (Btw, Aussie Rules Football is insanely large amounts of fun to watch)
So, most everyone has played or knows something about soccer. It's more a matter of Football & Baseball were well entrenched long before professional Soccer was around. Professional Soccer & Basketball really came about at the same time, which is mostly a post-WW1 thing.
And, a point a lot forget, Soccer is a spectator sport, not really a TV sport. It's much like Hockey in this regard. There's a lot of individual, subtle things, happening on the field for the entire match, and until HD TV, you really couldn't see them. Soccer is doing better in the States now, because of HD, but it's still a "highlight reel" sport, and, frankly, it's more enjoyable to watch that way.
Haypro looks quite out of place in those photos. He looks quite awkward being the only non-Korean there, and it's quite funny.
I think oGs needs to bring along HuK, Jinro, and NaDa next time. HuK probably has nice Canadian soccer skills, despite being short. Jinro is buff, and I heard that he works out. I also heard that NaDa has a nice body (*obligatory reminder about the NaDa's body thread*).

Thats not true the laws for Rugby and Football were made at the same time before they just kind of agreed on what rules to play. There was disagreement on what rules to keep so the sport split at the time into the two codes. The main stumbling point being the use of clipping being allowed weirdly and not the carrying of the ball. Also the games were much more violent back then, I think I am right in saying that the first college football game was played under the Association football rules of the time and had a violent flying V in it (Soccer being the shortened way of saying association).
Around 1860-70 though this is when the Football Association and Rugby Union (Which again split into Rugby League) were formed and many of the rules that make up the modern game were ratified. But there were organised games played dating back much further at the universities such as Rugby, It was in 1823 at Rugby where William Webb Ellis dared to pick up the ball and run with it.
Although if you start looking at Baseballs history with Rounders/Stoolball then that also goes back a hell of a long way obviously again though rules are different to the modern baseball game.
We always would see the BW teams playing soccar together in their off-seasons, it's good to see that's migrating over, makes the teams feel more legit somehow...

I couldn't stop laughing at the one in the red jacket. He looks like he's prepared to be locked in eternal combat with the other guy.
I totally didn't recognise MC without his glasses on! Need ret, Jinro and Haypro to show them real European football Jinro looks a great centre back, can see ret as a catlike goalkeeper, Haypro as an attacking full back and HuK as a tricky winger with white boots haha
I'm so bloody envious of the pitch they played in, although going from the pics, wouldn't a 7-a-side goal been much better? I mean, TOP does not look like a 1,85+m kinda guy to be in that goal

That percentage is way off. It might be the most played sport by young children (arguable since this kind of data is complete) but 80% is way too high.
This link says 18 million people play soccer in the USA. That's only like 6% of the population.
Please don't make up statistics if you want inform people.
I don't think there is even one country with 80 percent of the population that have played soccer. That means that around 30 percent of the girls have played soccer, and all the boys. There are 1.125.091 people that play soccer in the Netherlands. Which is 1/16th of the dutch population, ore 6.25 percent.
