Hello My fellos StarCraft Pals, recently I got Warcraft 3 and I have been playing it a lot lately.
Anyways, for those not aware in W3 there is a "trick" where when you choose multiple workers getting Lumber, build something, then press shift+Return cargo. Will make the worker return automatically to the harvesting without having to shift+click on the trees.
"Why are you being lazy and not test it yourself?"-You ask. The thing is that my SC2 PC is unavailable to me at the moment. I tried searching for a thread with this but I didn't seem to be able to find it with my search parameters.
Thanks in advance.

This use to work for minerals and it was removed by blizzard once people discovered it.
|
Yeah it worked but they fixed it in patch 1.1 I think? In either case it was 1.1 or one of the patches between 1.1 and 1.2.
In sc2 you simply spammed return cargo and go to the minerals through waypoints, no need for a building.
|
I'm pretty sure you can still do this. The guys above are thinking of something else. But you should still be able to do this, I would test myself but I'm at work for another 40 minutes ;D
|
You can still do this but only if the worker is holding minerals or gas. If its empty it wont work.
|
The guys above talk about the 7% more minerals abuse, not your problem.
For your question, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Blizzard RTS have always been the same for the basic mechanics. But an even easier way to do this is just to take a single worker with minerals in his hand, build something then shift-click return cargo. No need to take all of your workers.
|
Will it work, don't workers typically idle after being told to return cargo?
|
isn't this what sockfolding was?
it's still in game, but blizzard increased the time if you did it, so it has absolutely 0% benefit. You'd be basically be queing up your workers to do what they would be doing, at the same speed they would be doing. shame it got taken out really, wasn't a big thing, but early game when your sitting looking at your main with nothing going on, it gave you something to do.
EDIT..
yeah i see what he means, just re-read, instead of clicking on the minerals to return, you click build and return cargo, I'd imagine it would work the same, but unless it already has minerals/gas i see no benefit.

You could shift queue this instruction to increase mining time.. but it was patched asap by blizzard.
Edit: Re-read the OP .. i would imagine this would work, whether the worker is idle or continues mining needs to be tested

I think he is talking about when you build a Barracks and shift que you'r SCV back to mining and yes that works.
|
No, they will go back to the nearest mineral patch or refinery.

Yes, you can do this. I routinely do this when I play Terran - select several SCV's, tell them to build whatever I need built, then shift+click on a mineral patch and the SCV will automatically go back to mining after it is done building.

It does work when selecting a single worker (with minerals), but if you have all your workers selected, issue a build order and queue the "return minerals" command, the workers that are mining and are holding something will return the mineral/gas and then idle.
So, that´s bad.

just tested it if i understand you right
so you build a building with a scv(holding mins) and then you select all scvs and press C for return cargo?
i just did that the scv returned the mins and continued mining.

Awesome, since I saw this in W3 I thought it was more convenient. I'll try it on my laddering time tonight. Thanks.
And yeah I didn't mean sockfolding. I meant :
1.-Selecting all your mineral workers 2.-Build Stuff. 3.- Shit+Return Cargo 4.- Workers return to minerals when they stop building.
i saw this on a W3 video but I can't seem to find it. Sorry if I was not clear enough

First, the building worker will only return to mining if it starts building while holding cargo. Most of the time the workers are mining and not holding anything, so you're more likely to end up with an idling worker.
Second,if you Shift+"Return cargo" ALL of your mining workers, the ones that are currently holding minerals/gas will return the cargo and then idle. If you have 24 workers selected and queue the return cargo command, chances are there will be several that are holding minerals/gas and therefor start to idle.
Workers actually react to queued return cargo commands in 4 different ways, depending on whether they are holding cargo and/or if they are mining:
1. Mining Worker without cargo ---> No effect, keeps mining 2. Mining Worker with cargo ---> Return cargo then idle 3. Non-Mining Worker without cargo ---> No effect, stays idle. 4. Non-Mining Worker with cargo ---> Return cargo then returns to mining

Hes asking if you can do this WITHOUT clicking back on the mineral patch, so you hit 'c' for return cargo instead of clicking mineral patch.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the difference between WC3 and SC is that when you select workers that are currently gathering wood, all of them are going to have at least *something* to return, even if it's just 1 wood. So the "return cargo" command is always valid. However, in SC/SC2, the workers either have a chunk of minerals or they don't - and if you tell one to build a building and shift-click "return cargo," they might not actually have any cargo to return and therefore won't do anything.
|
Here's a more useful trick:
When you're sending workers to mine gas, press "C", then right click the gas and they'll return their minerals, then mine gas.
