#1 Changing keys on the right side of the keyboard, that are awkward to reach. Stuff like Town Camera (backspace) to ~ (although I think I'm going to change that to space), adding Alt-2,3,4 as alternates to control groups 8,9,0, moving immortal to R, infestor pit to F, etc. #2 Changes to make things as conceptually consistent across the 3 races. After over a thousand games played as random, I don't typically have trouble keeping the hotkeys straight, but I've always wanted to be able to do this. This is stuff like making probes, drones, and scvs all use 'W' for worker, overlords, depots, and pylons all 'S' for supply, and all raise/lower mechanics (liftoff buildings/depots/burrow) 'R'. Strangely enough, just last week I had a situation where I totally flubbed an extractor trick because my brain farted and I was trying to use both A and R to build on a geyser as zerg, and it took me a while to remember the right hotkey for some reason. Long enough that I ended up having to do a double-extractor trick just to not end up screwing myself over early. It's probably the first time I've screwed that up in a *very* long time, but makes it seem worth trying to relearn keys for very commonly used things. I didn't really have any trouble in my first couple practice games against the AI using these new keys, and it feels pretty natural. #3: Moving many keys to the grid layout. This is primarily focused on things that I just don't use often enough to even know the hotkeys for, mainly upgrades that only get used a maximum of 3 times per game, and many games. For example, I've moved the spawning pool upgrades to Q for metabolic boost (I actually knew that hotkey, but M is a little inconvenient to reach) and W for adrenal glands because that's where they appear on the grid. I also did the same thing for many abilities, although I set the original hotkeys as alternates. For example, on sentries, Forcefield is mapped to Z with an alternate of F, Guardian shield to X with an alt of G, and Hallucination to C with an alt of...uh...C, since it's in the right spot already. ![]() Which brings me nicely to my final point. I *really* wish they would let you move icons around on the grid. I don't like the pure grid scheme because attack=T and because there are a number of commonly used combos that become quite a bit more awkward to hit when using the grid layout (in particular, a *lot* of really commonly used things get moved to Z and X, which seem to be more difficult to hit quickly and consistently than most of the other keys on the grid, at least for me), but a grid layout where things appeared in the right spot on the grid to have their "natural" key wherever possible seems like it would be absolutely the ideal layout, giving multiple ways to learn and remember.

Some things I'll probably change with time. A lot of things I'd like to keep the same. I really should do something though because my keyboard is split in half at tgb... so there has to be a way to optimize it.

I guess after months and months of playing it it's more muscle memory then anything, and whenever I change something I just always go back to hitting the original key and fuck myself over. Some things I'll probably change with time. A lot of things I'd like to keep the same. I really should do something though because my keyboard is split in half at tgb... so there has to be a way to optimize it. Something that helped me immensely yesterday was keeping the old hotkeys on "alternate" - so you could actively try to get used to new setups while being able to "fall back" to your original setup in really stressful situations where it's more muscle memory than anything. Currently I struggle getting used to having attack move on "E", but 1e 2e 3e feels so much better since I can select the "1" hotkey after attack-moving with the "3" group immediately. Having "A" as alternate key makes it a lot easier, I'd suggest trying something like that if you really want to change but get confused once muscle memory "kicks in".

I've hated having to wait so long for proper custom hotkey support but they made such a nice job of the key-changing interface that im glad they took the time to do it right!

I changed control groups 6-10 to Z-B, and put all the other hotkeys on a 2x5 grid (Q-G). Like no command card actually uses more than 10 hotkeys, so they fit on a 2x5 grid nicely. Actually spent like forever to finalize this setup with no hotkey conflicts, so if anyone wants my hotkey file (its just a text file that goes in my-documents) please PM me.
