If we're going to have such static, unhealthy hobbies and even careers like this, we need to stay in shape and not fuck over half the population. It's the same idea as people cutting shit like McDonalds out of their life to keep America thin or whatever. I agree with this. I'd be rather turned off by the community if every starcraft pro looked unhealthy and sickly.

From the acne, the odd camera position, the lighting, the way he carried himself? Kid needs some swagger, some confidence. The problem is that in other sports, the act of practicing keeps you in shape, while practicing in e-sports is far from healthy. Whoever said the 1 hour of exercise for every 3 hours of gaming/laddering, that's a great way to take a break, stay healthy, and keep your mind on target. Not to mention gamer culture promotes an absolutely horrific diet of soda, energy drinks, and junk food.

This is supposed to be an intellectual sport; I really hope the fashion superficiality has not plagued science yet, but it would be the ultimate parody if it ever does. It's absurd, because cultural preferences vary a lot, and are also inevitably manipulated. People with strong aesthetic norms should realize that none of these are universally applicable anyway. What they consider ugly in another culture is considered beautiful, or is just ignored. This isn't true; there are standards of beauty that apply across the human race because we've evolved to prefer those traits. For men, wide hips and large breasts (showing fertility), for women, things like height, status, wealth are found attractive.

The only problem is that the majority of spectators care about looks more than things that are relevant, so it's in the players best interests to look good. Dressing nice, maintaining hygiene and taking care of your body is professionalism though. No one is asking them to become male models, but, come on, wash your face, exfoliate, get a decent hair cut, and do some exercise from time to time instead of laddering and sleeping.

(anywhere, but the states). Because guys look up to them. Let face it, if the cool boy in the yard was the gamer and not the soccer/football player, then the girls would dig him. Girls love men with power, and how do men get power? When other men admire they abilities. So all we have to do is to grow the e-sport, not f….. changes clothes. Girls love them because they have lots of money and are in great shape. They are pretty much hard-wired to love them.

Sure, there's that whole athletic thing, but Laforge has got it right. They're attracted to influence, and a man with that kind of power over others is definitely the epitome of such. Anyway, let's try to stay away from girl talk and stay on-topic: ugly has nothing to do with it. STAY IN SHAPE, GUYS.

Now, its not to say they all need to look like Calvin Klein underwear models, but some simple grooming, maybe a haircut or two and some nice fitting clothes would go a long way for a professional appearance. Especially on major events that will be broadcast on television, do us proud and look professional!

This is actually a good point and if e-Sports wants to be big in the West it needs to be considered. Look at Anna Kournikova. Not a great tennis player but popular due to looks. People don't want to watch ugly people on TV. I think "fit" progammers are going to be required if this is going to work in the West. You don't have to be super models but you can't be grungy.

Thats a really good idea, i usually try to do something like that, and i only drink water/diet green tea b/c of how much i'm gaming.

The average joe looking at a Starcraft event or watching an interview with a progamer will be totally turned off by esports if he is lead to believe that only ugly nerds play. Classical social expectations and desires. "I don't want to be considered like a nerd so I won't bother getting interested." Sure, WE don't care, WE're just interested in the skill level of the player. But we're ALREADY convinced that it's a great game and there is not enough of us to make esports as huge as the big sports.

Sponsors/organizers shouldn't have to pressure you to look presentable, you should already be doing it for yourself so you actually look professional. Classic example, watch the TLO vs MaDFroG showmatch, pretend you are Intel and you are scouting out players to join your team, pretend you don't know the results of the match. Which player would you take? FroG wins by a large margin, he presents himself far more professionally than TLO does. He was perfectly cool/calm in front of an audience and camera and very well groomed and dressed, while TLO kind of look like he just woke up and you could tell he was very aware of the cameras at all times and was doing his best to ignore them. Now this is not to say TLO won't gain that kind of presentation, this was his first LAN appearance after all while FroG has been around a long time.. this kind of thing is not new to him. ummm no tehy didnt..i saw alot of close ups of TLO and TLO looked perfectly fine to me..TLO looked a bit nervous but not so much..they were times where he even smirked and smiled when he won..i think people over analyze and look into this to much..cameras werent ignoring him..thats just stupid to even think..over anaylzing most people who have these thoughts are themselves not as confident as they think they are and probally have underlying self esteem issues..thats why they generally are disgusted at ugly people is because they see themselves in that person..its a Subconscious thing..a person who is completly confident and strong with themselves doesnt see this within people and can accept anyone..again im not saying go to LANS smelling and not showering or at least cutting your hair or something..but be yourself..dont be pressured to impress some guys..women see confidence not only looks..a guy can have the best looks with the best body but with no confidence chicks will see that and be like..yo this guy is a loser..and yes women i believe are attracted more to power and confidence its an instinct females have to be attracted to the pack leader..power=status and confidence..women feel a man with these qualities will keep them safe..
