With the release of Starcraft 2, I have noticed an influx of players coming into TeamLiquid's IRC channel looking for games. Being the good-natured, helpful person that I am, I'm upset that I have no where to point these players to.
Blizzard has not helped us at all by deciding to remove chat channels from Battle.net. So, that is why I've decided to put forth my own solution to this small, but easily fixable problem.
I introduce to you:

From now on, I invite all players to use this channel when looking for games. The aim is to help players that aren't satisfied with Blizzard's built in matchmaking service, those who are looking for a practice partner on their level, or just anyone looking for a game in general. This removes the hassle of trying to coordinate through forum posts, PMs, or any other outside communication -- one channel where anyone can go to find a game, at any time of day.
Please note! This is not restricted to just Starcraft 2. You're welcome to use this channel when looking for Brood War games, as well.
This is a new idea, so don't be put off if it doesn't seem like there are tons of people just yet. With any luck, the channel will grow and it will form its own small community within just a few weeks. Ever seen those massive Counter-Strike pickup channels? That's what I have in mind for #tlpickup, so spread the word!

To be honest I am surprised it took so long for anyone to stand up and do this, it's been done in other games for forever but I guess we the SC players just have been spoiled by the ease of Battle.net 1.0 and in-game chat channels.

I think this is a fantastic idea, sometimes I just want to play against a certain race or maybe practice against a certain build. Now we can have some good ole pick up practices against people that want to practice certain aspects of their game

Very awesome idea. I can't play SC2 for a bit (construction is making me keep my regular computer disconnected) but I'll definitely use this once I can get back on. Again, great idea and good initiative.

As a fps player, I've always wondered about the obsession with chat channels, seeing as there is irc. I'd advise on getting an echbot (#echbot http://www.echbot.com/) at least for everything above 2v2, as it eases the process tremendously.

Not to hijack but i wonder if a similar service would be viable for a teacher/student sort of thing, ive added a decent few bronze guys from the practice partner thread, and though im not great its been awesome helping out some guys with the basics of sc2, some good safe builds and giving them a vessel to practice micro and such. That probably sounded really patronising so i hope thats not how it comes across, but basically giving new people an insight into how the game works and the important things to note. Anyway ive been thinking of starting a thread of a irc like this one here, but im wondering how viable it would be.
Free of charge of course, just certain people opt to teach and others come in and ask for help with something, general or specific.

with there being barely enough people who use mIRC (at least I know gamesurge is dying which makes me think quakenet is just as bad), I'm not sure how big this will get (but if 1,000 users idle the #teamliquid channel then who knows).
Regardless I wish you good luck, and I may have to open a quakenet server when i log on mIRC now...

I'd love this channel if I could actually find someone to play, it usually is just me asking for a game for about 2-3 hours and then 4 hours later someone finally responds and wants to grab a game, by which time I'm already doing something else.

#TLPickup changed my life. I used to be a bum in the gutter -- real low-down, mouth-breathing trash. After finding #TLPickup, though, I can find games for any match-up I want to practice. I may still be a piece-of-shit garbage eater, but at least now I can eat garbage with other gutter rats!

Well, blizzard ignored adding chat channels in game, so someone had to step up and fix their mess. Great idea, great initiative!

I joined the #TLPickup channel this morning to see if anybody wanted to play games against a Zerg/NA/Bronze, and I was greeted with a rather willing audience. He said he wouldn't mind playing a few games with me, even though he thought he might be a little over my skill level.
It was awesome, I played a few games with him and few games with his buddy. They were both astounded by how well I played for a bronze- but noticed the glaring mistakes I was making. I tried my best to improve upon them each game; but alas, there were still a few times when I just had no clue what to do with myself.
We played one game on Metalopolis where I won because I had a lot of "stuff" and he let me keep going several times after he could have ended it. They were constantly giving me tips about what I could do have done here or there, saying how I was doing well with my macro BUT I should have done X,Y,Z somewhere along the way.
It was glorious that even though the ladder says I'm a bronze player- these diamonds saw my potential and helped me to notice what I should focus on to help myself climb the ladder.

People who don't want to ladder and decide to play customs all day are people who are afraid of losing their stats and can't take losing. Losing is one of the best tools you have to help you improve. How I went from bronze rank 97 in july to where I am today in master league. Customs are good to practice specific match ups don't get me wrong, but if you dont ladder you are going no where fast.

Looking for practice partners of any race, to play diverse games and somewhat of a standard play on a gentlemen's agreement. I play allot of games in a sitting, with occasional few min breathers to smoke &/or watch our replay. My time zone is (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada). I'm on most of the time, always all night. Throughout afternoons and 2pm is most common log ins.
I feel reasonably comfortable in every match up, I'm currently just working on affective APM. Recently I have been changing all hot keys to fit my own play style better. Every hot key is almost different now, and it feels very smooth. Mainly looking for players of the same rank who want to drill games over and over on different maps, so it helps adjust myself to the new hot keys that have been introduced slowly.

Hey,
I am a diamond protoss, looking to get much better. I have pretty much just started the game, but I do have a background in wc3. Would be great to play with some other plat-masters players of any race. This is going to sound sad and pathetic, but I currently have no friends to play with, so don't hesitate to message me. The chat channels are beyond useless in the friend making department. So, anyone who is active and commited and willing to actually practice, pm me here or in game or whatever. Not for sure what forum this should be under but this one looked appropriate.. Silver-league Terran, <200 since I bought SC2. I'm somehow interested in getting better, but didn't have any RTS-Experience before, so I'm sometimes struggling whith micro/lategame macro and handle crucial situations like I was asleep. Therefore interested in some CGs/Practice games versus any race on my level. (was MMR'ed versus Gold after winning some games btw)

This channel is pretty useless, every time I join it's completely dead. Nobody ever replies, it's just another channel that TL fanboys idle in.

Did we ever get around to setting up TL pickup channels on battle net for each skill division?
I know i for sure would enjoy playing a few games not on ladder that i can play around with a few builds i have floating around and my friends aren't always on.
