Hello, back in wc3 the chat between observers was saved but only if the replay was saved by another observer so what i often did after playing a match was to ask a friend who observered to send me the replay since i think its fun to watch the replay while reading comments from the people observing.
yesterday i played some cgs and asked for the replay from a friend but it turned out in sc2 it does not save the chat, only player chat was saved.. now i know this might not be a big deal to most people but what are your thoughts on this? should it be saved or not ?
Poll: should observer chat be saved in replays?yes (203) 91% no (21) 9% 224 total votes Your vote: should observer chat be saved in replays? (Vote): yes (Vote): no

I don't think so... It'd probably get hectic with max observers in the game, when really the only part that -actually- matters is the real players' chat
|
Should be an option to show / not show specs-chat.
|
sometimes it's interesting to hear. like this is rare but i remember one rep with squall mondragon and infernal were chatting while obsing ret vs koll. for the most part their convo was interesting except for a few disgusting parts >< but if the commentary they make is constructive ill appreciate it.

actually, it IS saved in all replays ( that i have parsed thus far... i.e. more than 7k replays)
whether the sc2 engine shows it, i do not know, as i only analyze replays via my own class library.
*EDIT i just got beta, however, so i havent fully tested all configurations as to whether or not it is ALWAYS being stored.

I want to remember you the "gorky's incident". The observers chat has to be solved for sure!

I thought it was but haven't paid close attention. Anyways I voted yes but I also think they need an option to easily hide chat (preferably options for all chat and to hide all observer chat but leave ref and player chat). I've noticed on several casts for tourneys and the like that sometimes there are a lot of observers and some get quite chatty thus covering up part of the screen.

I love obs chat, some War 3 matches are great to get an idea of what's going on - other times it's just hilarious
|
I love seeing obs chat for my games
Keep in mind though that with the current architecture, maphacks will also be able to show enemy team/obs chat in real time if they make this change.
|
observer chat is usually more entertaining than the game themselves, especially with a good group of people
|
I don't see why it shouldn't be included, an option to turn it off/on would as said earlier be a plus.
|
From an educational POV this would be a huge addition. I wouldn't mind being able to type things to some of the guys I play so they can watch it after the fact... I would also like the ability for others to do this with me. Like taking notes on a game.

These cheaters were caught due to observer chat? Good point to keep it in. At times it's fun to read observer chat. Ofcourse it looks like it's already being saved as someone said so maybe it's just a question of displaying the chat.
|
yah that's it, and this is why we need obs text in replays
I can't believe that was 5 years ago... time flies :O

I think it certainly should be an option. As mentioned earlier, if there were a ton of observers and they're chatting away the whole game, it might be distracting. But I think it might also be useful. Watching the Triple Strike Cup games, I've found some of the observer chat to sometimes be useful, and I think that it would be a useful option (and a very easy one to implement).
So +1 for the option to have observer chat displayed or not displayed in replays.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention this, definately need an option to turn this chat off while watching it from a neutral POV (not a specific player where you only see it from his view) because at times the chat is really retarded and distracting.
