It's true that many of the 1 posters [myself excluded] merely jumped on an opportunity to acquire a key, never to be heard from again. I'm pretty sure this includes a hefty amount of people who downloaded the cracked version and never will support this community in the future. But that's exactly my point. I realize there are people that have been supporting this community since its birth, and others that have been contributing for a very long time. Unfortunately, everyone needs a place to start. I detest the idea of going to a random thread, of a game which I have very limited knowledge of, and then proceeding to spew out random information that may or may not be true. It simply will not help promote a high level of discussion about the game. As a noob at SC, and speaking for others who are like-minded, I would rather be a listener until reaching a point of sufficient expertise to be considered, essentially, worthy to speak.
This is ultimately where a lot of hate falls, but the motivations of people who have not contributed much may be different on an individual level. Some may not care; some may just be looking for chance to win and never contribute again. Others however, may actually be seeking a way to improve themselves until they feel that the information they provide will benefit the community.
My point is this: you have no idea about each of these posters and "self-nominators" until after you see their posts or actions [or lack thereof, for that matter].
Now for who is deserving and who isn't. What does deserving mean to this community? Does it refer to people who have already contributed much to this environment and to the scene? I know that a lot of the veterans on these threads have done a considerable work to shaping the SC/2 scene. Clearly they are "deserving". But could deserving also be referring to those people who possess the potential and drive to be an asset to this community? They haven't done much as of yet, either because they were unfamiliar with TL.net, or because they possessed no valuable information to share with the community. But if they not only want to become better, but consistently make the effort to improve at the game and also try to figure out ways to expand and evolve the SC scene, then could they also be considered deserving?
I am a noob that is part of the group I just described. I want to become better, and regardless of whether I get a key from this competition, I will make the effort to improve and contribute to the scene.
But am I deserving enough to keep my name in this contest? I'll let the community decide. If you guys believe that deserving refers only to those who have already made an impact on the community, then I'll request that my name be taken out. If you believe that deserving also applies to the noobs that want to improve, then let my name stay. Thanks. I am new to this site, and immediately joined when I saw I could be in the running for a SC2 beta key. I know that sounds kind of selfish, but it is explained below.
In relation to my RTS gaming history:
I played Starcraft when it came out and I was very young so I never understood the mechanics of the game. I loved it and I remember hating Zerg because I was scared of aliens (thank you Alien movies), I never played competitively because I didn't have good internet connection at the time, and I don't think I would have been able to comprehend sophisticated strategies, nor would I have had the micro. I remember always playing Terran simply because of Ghosts, they were my favourite unit by far.
I got into Warcraft 3 as well, and played that competitively for a little while. But again, I was too young to understand intricate strategies and I didn't have the attention span to develop my micro management. I didn't get that good because I quickly became interested in DotA and invested a lot of time into that.
My latest RTS experience is Company of Heroes, where I can proudly announce I got into the top 10 in the world for (though the competition of the game is nothing compared to a game of Starcraft's magnitude). I loved that game, but imbalance ruined the experience for me (the Opposing Fronts expansion brought in the completely imbalanced British and Panzer Elite, and made some fundamental changes to the initial factions that screwed up balance further). Company of Heroes essentially got me very interested in RTS, and it's where I developed the desire to perfect micro management as well as create my own unique strategies.
So now I aim to move onto Starcraft 2, where the competition is much more fierce than Company of Heroes, also because some friends were Warcraft 3 players and told me Starcraft 2 is the next biggest game. Only recently I began watching Starcraft 1 and 2 replays just to see how insane the game is skill-wise compared to other RTS games - and I was very impressed. I noticed quickly that Starcraft 2 is a game I would be very interested in, and would devote a lot of time to becoming a competitive player.
Thanks. Every single one of these guys has either 1 or 2 posts. What a fascinating social experiment this is turning into. edit: I'm not trying to sound smug because I'm obviously a newbie poster too, it's just interesting how the longer people are on TL, the more likely they are to support the community by dropping out- goes to show how strong of a community TL really is. + Show Spoiler +
I understand where your coming from, but just because I've only posted to this thread doesn't mean I'm only in it for the beta key. If I don't get it so what I honestly don't plan on winning it. That doesn't mean I can't compete for it does it? I literally found this site a month ago and ever since then I've been on here literally daily watching streams and contributing to the chats. I would absolutely love to help this community grow. Its just impossible when I am not fortunate enough to possess a beta key. Hints why I'm posting to this thread.

No, I've not posted alot, nor have I contributed anything. I just wonder, how does one support this community anyhow? Do you have to have a high post count, is the post count what counts as contribution? Then let me go spam some threads for a while.
Is it that one must go create a new fancy build order, if so, how many of you supporters have done so? Is it, perhaps, that one must make friends on this website? Is it that one must watch the streams on the site (because this one I do, alot, and have done so for quite some time)?
What is a contributor on this site? Or is it just the friendly chaps that you have been getting to know that are deserving? It'd be nothing wrong with that, I'd totally understand it, but does being your friend mean that you are contributing to the community? Of course it does in some way but not in any way that we newcomers could possibly do, since we haven't had the time to get to know you.
Also, there are several of you guys who say that we on the list should start talking to each other? About what exactly? "Hey, randomdude1 please give up your seat so that I could have it instead.", "Why don't you do it, Aldehyde? You could just as well do it instead of me.", "Randomdude1, we both know I am more 'deserving' than you are".
That's silly.
Interestingly enough, you two both have the passion that makes a good community member. I see nothing wrong with you staying in the contest.
However, to clarify the point I was trying to make: Judging purely by the rate at which higher-count posters are leaving the contest and lower-count posters are staying in (which isn't to say they don't care about TL), it seems like the more you get involved in TL, the clearer it becomes that the community is what is valuable over personal gain. Obviously this isn't true for everyone, it's just a general sentiment that I noticed. Sorry if it felt like I was singling people out (my fault for quoting people instead of just stating my point).
Good luck in the contest, and I hope you guys stick around and keep contributing to TL!

Again, this is a thread that I think is simply asking those who have already self-nominated themselves to reconsider if they are truly worthy of receiving a beta key. Some criteria that will probably be considered are: Has one expressed an interest in the Beta? How much dedication does one have for the Starcraft series? How much has one contributed back to the community? Is one just staying in hoping he/she will get lucky and win a key besides the fact that he/she has not contributed much to the community? I think these are important questions to consider for everyone on the list.

Because of all the self nominations, shouldn't it be more interesting to give the keys to the first 10 people who crossed themselves out?

But the hilarious implication of specifically stating there's no reverse psych going on is that you can't trust someone who would do such a thing anyway. Maybe there IS a reverse psych thing going on. After all, wouldn't dropping out make you more deserving than those who decided to stay in?
Think about it: the original thread asked for those who were deserving. Almost everyone on the list gave the same story, or close to it. This second phase is to give people a chance to actually distinguish themselves from this already largely homogeneous group.
Here's my theory: The pool of users who dropped out of the list are going to be put in a new list. Judging from post history etc the keys will be given out from that list.
But then again...Hot_Bid said on page 3...
lol Hot_Bid mindraping the internet. Kudos.
I totally agree with the reverse psychology crap thats going on. I'm on here fighting for this beta key not because I deserve it. Obviously from my credentials on this site I have none. I'm fighting for it because I sincerely want to contribute to this group. I've never blogged so I apologize if I'm responding incorrectly lol. If I honestly come across someone that I feel really deserves it when its crunch time I will drop, but I feel like I have a lot to provide for this community and I plan on doing so whether I receive a key or not. I just hope all the stubborn people that are just in it for a key don't ruin it for those that are in it for more than just bragging rights.

My opinion is obviously biased though since I nominated myself and anyway it's not up to me to judge whether I deserve one or not. It's up to Hot_Bid and the other moderators. How they view how much I contributed will be what's important in determining whether I get a beta key or not. Regardless, however, thank you for putting me on your list.

In fact I think you, Ace, deserve a key solely for being the 21st user to register on TL.net. You really should get one.

I would absolutely love to help this community grow. Its just impossible when I am not fortunate enough to possess a beta key. Hints why I'm posting to this thread.

I wish to remain on the list. + Show Spoiler +Yes, I've only been a member for so long.
Just notice that quite a few "higher count posters" weren't eligible for this contest in the first place

You actually end up on my list of few who I think might deserve it more than other self-nominators back on page 29. Check it out and let me know what you think. Well, of course, I think I deserve a key because of the reasons that I already provided in the previous thread. It doesn't matter what we think of the users in on the list. Several of the users I think deserve a key the most, like Ace, have already opted out.
We allocated a number of keys for this, a number much larger than what most people would expect (judging by the guesses in this thread). If that number is not reached by opt-outs, we will have no problem giving 0 keys to the list.

I wish it were up to them, because then it would be more fair. I have no problem with not getting chosen because someone else is more worthy than I am. But now that it's in the hands of those who have self-nominated out of desperation for the key, our hopes are almost shot. There are a lot of desperate people out there.
What's good about this whole thing, though, is that even if you and I don't get keys, we'll still be doing our best to contribute with what we have anyways. Others won't even look at this site again.

Everybody still on the list unite! We must all leave at once. Everybody ask for your name to be crossed! Think of ESPORTS! Every second your name is on the list you are hurting ESPORTS!

I absolutely agree and its those people that are the ones that are going to ruin this opportunity for others unfortunately.

Oh yeah, not to mention all the people who will say "I'm staying in" simply because of that message that was sent. And then they won't look at this thread again because they've secured their stay.
Our first problem was 1-time posters not seeing this thread. Now it's the 2/3-time posters who say they're here and still alive so they won't get out opted-out, and then never seeing the thread again.
