I play Starcraft 2 on my Vaio Laptop, which is a widescreen laptop. Now i can choose between two resolutions, 1024*768 and 1600*900. I am really wondering why there is no support for a lower widescreen resolution, as i could play smooth at 1280*720 without any slowdowns. Hopefully, more resolutions will be available on release. At the moment, the game runs still good on medium settings, but i recognize slowdowns here and there (a radeon hd 4650 with 1gb is my graphic card). A lower 16 : 9 resolution would be nice and the best way to play smooth without lowering details. Is it the same for you guys playing on widescreen with so little options to set the resolution? Or perhaps there might be a way to set the resolution in an *.ini file until they made it appear in the options.
Go to options, graphics change your settings from fullscreen to Windowed (fullscreen).
It'll play like fullscreen but its really windowed so alt-tabbing is absolutely fine. At the same time, StarCraft 2's resolution will match your desktop resolution rather then a preset resolution. So you can set your desktop reso to 1280*720 and hit windowed fullscreen and BAM.
did I mention you don't have to edit your setting.ini or whatever?
thanks for your quick answer strange there is no width entry in my variables..txt so i added it manually and set both width and height to 1280 and 720. Now everything looks a bit washed out, which i think is not the lower res fault. At least the game runs smoother now
tried it out teddy but then the height is larger then my monitor meaning i cant see the menu tab at the bottom etc, which is pretty strange as well :D i think i wait for newer drivers and set the res in the variable, at least the game fits the screen then.
i have some problems with resolution too =( i use a laptop like you, but have it linked with a widescreen monitor during playing. i dont see supplys etc, but i am too lazy to fix it =(
A day or 2 ago i saw chill's stream and was amazed at how he could get such a wide resolution. Turn out it was because he had a 16: 9 screen. However i tried to change some little things in order to get a somewhat 16: 9 dual screen and eventually i think i managed to get it wider... Is that even allowed ? >_< Pretty sure we can even get a simple 17" screen with a larger height...
Could it be that your card only works on certain resolutions? The resolutions that I see in game are the resolutions that my card can support (but then again w/ nvidia control panel I can add custom resolutions)
No but what i mean is that i think we can even get a larger ingame screen (read unfair advantage compared to the classic 4:3 or 16: 9 screen, hell even the 16 has already an advantage against 4:3...). What i don't understand is no matter how big your resolution is, i don't think it's possible to see for example on my screen the gas and ramp without scrolling. Unless it's actually possible and i should get a newer screen ?
It's not that 16 resolutions aren't there; it's just that they are not the *expected* 16 resolutions (at the lower end). While 1680x1050 and 1920x1080 are there, 1280x720 is missing (instead, there's 1360x800). 1360x800 should be playable on a modern (that is, within the past year) laptop with AMD MR 4xxx graphics (especially since my HD3450 has no problem).

that is freakin AWESOME
you have to learn to mouse3 scroll though because side scrolling on that would be a complete pain.

I'd love to see someone with Eyefinity like This. That would be sick

the best way is setting the resolution in the variables if there are not enough to choose from in the graphics setting and yes i am sure that i have 16 : 9 aspect ratio (vaio vgn-fw4 is a pretty good laptop for sc2)
btw crazy widescreen screenshot cant imagine this will be allowed :D
Alright ... so I'm not sure I understand all of this.
What is the best way to get a 16 game resolution out of a 16:10 monitor in windowed mode? - will the game be stretched/distorted or will there be black bars?
The reason i want to do this, of course, is because I've heard that you can see more of the map by doing so. I don't believe I have the option for 16 resolutions in the regular SC2 graphics options.
When the game is in windowed mode, you can drag the edges to resize it even though it doesn't show the standard windows resize icon for your mouse pointer.

Eyefinity/dual screen may be cool for single player but even at 16: 9 I consider it somewhat of a disadvantage because of how long it takes to shift your eye's focus between the minimap and the supply counter
i should try that dual screen setup out :D..looks nice.
But eah, having to actually move your head to check minimap/food count is a pain.
Also mouse scrolling will be a major pain. Though i can see a big advantage in having such a wide field of vision compared to the standard one...interesting!

I have a 4 : 3 monitor but wanted to play in 16 : 9 to see more of the battlefield. So I changed the resolution in game in the video game settings to a resolution that was 16 : 9 (I think it was 1024x768) and then went to my Nvidia control panel and told my monitor not to scale my resolutions.
As a result the game now plays for me in 16 : 9 (but with those black borders top and bottom of screen).

Actually, as of patch #12, there is support for 1280x720 (there was support for 1360x800 before)
With my HD3450 (256 MB DDR2), I played 1360*800@Low, but with my HD5450 (512 MB GDDR3), I play 1280*720@High, despite losing my overclock when I upgraded GPUs (I suspect power issues, as I changed nothing in the BIOS and I'm running the same OS).
