I believe most people automatically thinks that GMT = British time, and forget that they in fact not the same(There is no such thing as daylight savings for GMT). The right thing to write would really be 6 pm EST 11 pm BST.

Time zones are so dreadfully confusing. My typical solution is to just plug it into converters, knowing that I'm EST +1.
