There are a few improvements that could be made to make watching replays of an event almost as good as watching it live. It's too easy, without some standards and various behaviours by replay sites, to spoil the outcome so I'd suggest some features that keep viewing games more exciting.
The option to hide replay duration. Knowing the game ends in one minute tells you a lot.
Replays are always saved with player names in alphabetical order. All sites should follow this naming convention. Too often the first name is the winner.
Replays can be joined together into one file for a whole multi-map series that plays continuously and is downloaded once, other wise knowing the number of games to get a win (Bo3, Bo5) and the number of replays you've downloaded will spoil the last game as you know the outcome.
Hopefully you can understand how these changes would improve following a scene by replays which will be a bigger part of SC2 than they are of SC at present.

Money/units/units that r being made/ it s just examples of things that i would like to see.
|
There's a very big difference between watching replays to learn and watching replays for fun.
|
to be quite honest all you need to watch a replay is; fog of war speed viewpoint resource count
nothing more. i know im for sure going to be "minimizing" all the extra unnecessary boxes displaying essentially useless information.

Interestingly enough, there are a number of hidden replay commands that can show leaderboards for different things. Most of them are useless, but you can use it to easily see both player's resource counts at the same time.
The commands:
+ Show Spoiler + /replay show kills -- Shows the number of kills. /replay show razings -- Shows the number of razings. /replay show slaughter -- Shows the slaughter leaderboard. /replay show resources -- Shows the resources. /replay show minerals -- Shows the minerals. /replay show gas -- Shows the gas. /replay show score -- Shows the total score. /replay show score units -- Shows the units score. /replay show score buildings -- Shows the buildings score. /replay show score kills -- Shows the kills score. /replay show score razings -- Shows the razings score. /replay show score user -- Shows the custom score. /replay hide -- Hides the leaderboard.
I don't know how many people know about this, but Heinermann posted them over at SEN and I had no idea.

wow. i wonder if professionals knew about this? thanks for the post. are these all of the commands? or are there more?

As far as I know that's all of them. You can check out the source here.

Wow...I never knew those commands:/

you could just watch reps in chaoslauncer....
epic commands post though! sheeeeeexy

I want my replays online, with friends....come on now blizzard, YOU CAN DO IT....-_-
Thx for the replay command list

You gotta be kidding me. Let's take a poll:

Wow I can't believe those commands exist. But I think show resources is the only useful one and only because it's slightly more convenient than clicking.
|
How the fuck did we not know about this?
|
holy shit that is awesome i never knew about those replay commands! It seems to get stuck sometimes though (IE the resource one will stop counting and you can tell its inaccurate because you see it's different when you click on the respective player's units). I wish there was a food count one.

WHAT THE FUCK? Why didn't anyone say anything about those commands?

makes me wonder what else is buried deep in BW that we still have yet to discover... this is a Nice find indeed after 10+ years
|
LOL. Move this to the BW forum. That is hilarious. Never ever knew that.
|
Wow 40 no's and 1 yes. Symmetry must be the only person on earth who knew about this.
|
|
WTF? I've been watching replays since they were added and never had an inkling this existed
Other crap I didn't know: ALT+# Selects and moves the screen to the assigned unit group. CTRL+C Centers the screen on the currently selected unit ALT+C Centers the screen on the currently selected unit
|
WOW how did no-one know this?
Vague sidenote: anyone know how to change whose hotkeys you use in a replay? I've never been able to figure it out
|
games been out for 12 years and its most dedicated players are just now figuring this out lol
as far as the hotkeys thing I think it only works for the player that was in slot 1.

I was browsing this topic a while ago randomly, noticed Symmetry's post, noticed how I didnt know about them, took a mental note to try them out sometime.
Then by now this thread has exploded looks like I was not the only one who didnt know about those:D

To be fair, the game has been out 11 years and replays have been out for 8 years. And since Blizzard never released documentation of these commands in patch notes, it's not even certain that the commands have existed for 8 years. I've never known a dedicated gamer to spend his time experimenting with line commands while watching replays (or while doing anything). That's for the dedicated tinkerers who have more productively spent their time designing tools that fill in the vast gaps left by Blizzard. Indeed, Observer Mode exceeded Blizzard's attempt at improving the observer's experience infinitely more than these replay commands.

If that is the formula, then what do you mean by all units? All units produced or all units currently alive? All produced isn't very usefl. Even if it's currently alive, the inclusion of peons in the equation will make it inconvenient. Battles that occur without every unit being involved won't result in useful numbers and the production of new units while battles occur will also need to be taken into consideration. So in the end, it seems more convenient to simply remain aware of the units that went into a battle and came out by looking at them rather than attempting to find useful information in the change of that score.

It most likely is the same unit score that you can see at the end of a game / that you can access with triggers in UMS maps. That means that it should display the resources spent for units up until now, including all lost units. From watching a replay it looks like it is just like that.
There actually is a "units and buildings" score available in the map editor too, as well as a "kills and razings" count. Basically the 2 scores / counts added up. So it might be possible that there actually are 2 more commands, but they certainly are not the commands I tried ("units and buildings", "unitsandbuildings").
Now what you can use those scores for is the difference in resources harvested. You'd have to add up units and buildings score (if the command really doesn't exist), as well as the current resources if you want to be precise. It's nothing really important, but could be interesting in a few scenarios.
The kills counters might be nice if you are trying to keep track of the kills during harrassment (so you don't have to count the marines yourself, or maybe when there are multiple drops at once).

I'm pretty sure you get a player's hotkeys according your player slot. If you are in slot 1 you will get the keys of the player who had slot 1 in the game. For example, on Desti there are only 2 slots and if you host a replay and a friend joins, you will usually fill the top two slots (the two the original players filled) and you have there keys. Occasionally you won't get any hotkeys no matter what... not sure why...

Another option that would improve replays would be to toggle observer or player chat. I've seen a lot of replays where the observers are chatting away (sometimes in languages I can't understand) and it's very distracting to have a large portion of your screen covered in text.
|
Wow.... I was once a serious map maker of sc, so I learned how to use all the bugs/glitches of sc to make maps with. I am now a competitive D+/C- iccup player so I learned all the melee bugs/glitches, but I never knew about those replay commands, heh.
|
Wow. Thank you Symmetry! Now I won't have to click on each player's units back and forth to get a resource count.
|
Amazing! Haha, how strange for such commands to exist and never really be revealed to the public. The resource tool really makes things quite nice ^.^ Must show my sc buddies this.
|
whoa, there you go. thanks mate

oh and...why are the commands in spoiler tags? still trying to hide them?

yeah i was wondering why you can type in a replay in single player... i guess i didn't wonder hard enough.
|
Whoa, never knew about these!
|
Many thanks, blizzard shouldn't have hidden them away so It's amazing how we were loving replays so much we didn't expect more functionality.
Somewhat telling though, blizz are making out that this stuff is new in sc2...i think even THEY didn't know it was in. Maybe some plucky coder snuck it in at the last minute.
Agree with the other choices in the thread however, nothing wrong with customisable replays. (specially to avoid spoilers)
|
Not really a replay thing, but somewhat related. I want to not have to put the same bleeping map file in multiple locations in order to watch replays. Right now I have 4 (FOUR!) copies of (2)AncientIsles.w3x in my Warcraft 3 folder. 1 in Maps\, 1 in Maps\FrozenThrone\, and 2 in Maps\Download\ (yup, same file. Same md5sum and everything).
And while I'm dreaming, support for watching old version replays would be nice too. Like if the game logic was built as a library rather than into one monolithic executable.

Probably not by coincidence, I heard about the replay commands today from a friend.
Wtf, why wasn't this in the tutorial?

what was this thread about?? NVM... thanks for sharing this commandas, never hear about them before and I read A LOT about SC.

Heinermann has documented large portions of the game's data. He probably found the commands among the code somewhere. He's also the person who found EUDs and stuff.

There is some software that allows you to choose the version of SC:BW you wanna run, very useful when you wanna watch old reps.
The fact we just know about these commands is even more astonishing than a guy using markers to finger his gf O_O

Can we ask blizzard and see if we get a response as to why these kinda things were never documented? -_-

I was wondering about that... is it really still fingering if you're using markers?
