Some good news: With Beta Patch 2.0.3 will come the addition of some exciting new features including the ability to watch replays with others, take command of those replays at any point in the game, and also allow the ability to recover games dropped to technical or network issues. We will provide a bit more information on this tomorrow as well via the StarCraft II blog and a full run down of 2.0.3 patch notes.
Hell yeah replay viewing together! Sucks beta is going to be down till tomorrow though but really like that they are finally adding the replay together and the ability to play replays from any point in them ^_^
So excited for the being able to pick up replays at any point. Looking forward to practicing my micro over and over and over again until I get it right.

i hope they didn't hold out on shared replay view and these other features until hots release just to sell more. Oh well at least its here now! next 6 weeks or so of beta are gonna be fun with this new stuff and all the good players finally starting to switch over.

i dont get it. so i can watch a replay of mc vs mvp, and i can stop the replay in the middle, pick mvp and play as him? so it like im playing against mc? mc will just play like he did in the game, and i will just pick up from where mvp left off? how is that possible. would what mc does not make any sense since im doing different stuff than mvp did?

They described it as that you in any point of a replay can re-host it as a game as long as you pick the same map and the same amount of players, the two players in the re-hosted game (player 1 and player 2) simply takes player 1 and players 2 place. When the game loads the situation such as resources, amount of units and so forth exactly the same as the time of the replay you specified that the would be re-hosted from.
EDIT wonder if you could replace one player with a computer, and if it worked, exactly how retarded the computer would be at executing whatever the human player was about to do

OMG "watch replays with others" cant wait to try that out!
Shared replays are going to be SO AWESOME! Man, this game is going to so be worth $40. And to think you can just pick up WoL and HoTS for the same amount as WoL's initial price?

OMFG it's coming so soon! Nice! Blizzard does it again, giving new features/updates suddenly instead of saying "soon" several times before it comes out. I love not having to be hyped over something and wait forever for it. Well I mean they announced this a while back yes, but they didn't say anything about this in the last month or so, which saves some pain.
THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME! it will be SO MUCH EASIER to practice now with the resume feature! and community shit ftw!
The servers are down now and I can't see any official comments anywhere from blizzard. I guess the only warning or information they gave at all was the quoted passage in the OP and the warning ingame before the servers went down. Have any information been given at all as to how long this maintenance will go for? Edit: How about while they are at it they work out a secure way to let us view replays offline T_T

Due to some complications that have arisen with the background implementation of Global Play, we will need to enter an extended maintenance to support the deployment of Beta Patch 2.0.3. We will be bringing the beta down this evening and will bring it back up after finalizing the deployment of this patch late in the day tomorrow (1/24/2013).

We will also be pushing the fix for the bug currently plaguing the Mac version of Swarm Beta (Thanks for your patience fellow Mac users!), plus a few other fun features we'll save for our info blast tomorrow.
Our apologies for having to disrupt any time you had planned to spend on the beta over the course of the next 24 hours. We'll have it back up as soon as we can.
I am hoping that they find some way to do a "mass simulcast" kind of starcraft. Where you can have some big name like husky or Day9 or MLG or something, casting a live game (or replay), and have like 10,000+ people watching along with it in game maybe with streaming audio from the caster. (and able to look at diffrent areas or units if they want)
I'm also hoping they fix the zerg background screen. Because everytime I finish a game, it becomes a JPEG again. They should also default the option to be able to see the buildings and units of your opponents. I'd like to see what upgrades they are having and I always forget to turn on the option :D

Not sure if blizzard has the technology to prevent massive amounts of lag(and associated raging) from happening, but a very cool idea indeed! Originally planned to experiment with tempests in PvT but I guess this is worth the wait.
(Surprised this didn't make the front page for TL)
Thank goodness for fb friends, cause' THIS IS AWESOME. If this is integrated with the release it will revolutionize training and coaching leading to mid-late game play we've only been privileged to see on occasion in sc2 thus far.
The whisper has been in the air for a while, but I'm jubilant to see it ;D
I was really looking forward to some laid back HOTS tonight , but this is a worthy delay. I wonder how many people can watch at the same time. MLG/DH/IPL/etc... watch parties anyone?

There was a plugin for one launcher which allowed that, I think it was for the advloader, but I am not sure.
Wasn't it called BW launcher or something which practically could do everything, didn't they even manage to make some kind of in game replay stream where you could connect to anyone and watch them play through the replay interface?

Sounds nice. I really, really want to see some changes to the Corruptor.... sooo boring atm.
Did they say something about changing the corruptor? Seems quiet a few people are saying this as if blizzard has talked about changing it :o.
The only thing that I'm away about is that sky toss seems very strong and that they might nerf it just a tiny bit, they might go the other way though and give the corruptor something so it's more useful against skytoss. We will see tomorrow though!

Well they can make sure that they dont have the players, nor the caster "waiting" on any simulcasted viewer. I think the whole Battle.Net system has the bandwith for 10k+ people watching (after all its just as much as if those 10k+ were playing a game and it can do that). If the viewers connection cant keep up, instead of having the players/caster "wait" for the player, that player is just dropped (or waits unable to see any changes till it catches up), so sorry get a better connection.

No. Since continue from replay is totally unrelated to the score calculation from ladder play. You can only continue in a custom game.
I bet Bnet will be buggy as hell after they release this patch :D

i am waiting for this since launch. cause my internet connection is so bad can only watchstreams in 240p
the problem i guess is that these big tournaments needs to make ads. so as long as blizzard doesnt include some mechanic thats lets them play ads from time to time this wont really happen cause it would end in a competition between MLG etc and Blizzard.. not a wise thing cause those big tournaments are making the game popular!
technical it is possible i guess. practicable if they add some advertising mechanic into the game...
i still would look forward to this feature. just imagine if you could have your own camera?

And how would advertisers profit from this?
blizzard could add an api for linking external banners into the live game data stream. something like this.. or the ad could be audio. both is not as good as a video add fullscreen which also is a clickable link to the destiantion, but the positive thing is on the other hand it cant be banned by browsers.
many ads (flash ads on twitch) can be banned by the browser. only true stream video ads must be watched. dunno. maybe the sponsors will ask blizzard if they could implement sth.. with news for tournaments inside the game itself watchers could increase a lot. many people dont always keep trakc of tournaments etc.
I dunno, but I see room for improvement. technically its possible.
but a highly reliable esports game maybe wants to cut down on unnessecary stuff like API's, streaming options, External input etc...

This would be cool in combination with the possibilty to create custom ingame banners (Like the ones on the map, where the marine dances with an iGun and stuff)

The next Swarm beta patch will include significant changes to the way spectators are handled within the game. Spectating users will no longer be considered players, and will no longer be associated with a player slot.
For triggers, this means that the Spectator and Referee values within the Player Controller preset are now obsolete, and the Controller Of Player function will never return these values. The values will remain in the editor for backward compatibility with existing maps, but should no longer be used.
Custom maps using these values may need to be updated to account for these changes. In order to allow spectating players that can affect the game through triggers, maps should now add explicit player slots for these players within the Player Properties dialog.

agree, reconnecting to 2v2 or 3v3 game is pretty cool tho
The ability to resume other player's games from replays along with your own has a lot of potential. You could resume a pro level tvz before the zerg attacks with banelings, practice marine splitting, and compare your results with the terran. This could be a great way to practice micro and army management with other players.

Well I dont see why MLG or other tourny/casters cant create a custom map that edits the in game UI of the person watching (if they are not one of players/observers) so that they can display ads (maybe off to the side where it doesnt get in the way or allow people to dismiss the ad).

So now, if a game is dropped because of internet or stuff, the players have to keep sitting in their booth while keeping their headphones on and not talk to anyone or else they could easily hear what is going or have someone tell them while the game is reloading? While thes feature to resume the games is obviously great, this may cause some problems with players hearing crucial information or something like that

Well this resume feature is... its hard to overstate how much this will change how we use the game.
Imagine two pros resuming the same play at a certain spot with each other over and over to perfect their control over one particular situation, like warp prism micro or marine splitting vs banelings. It will make it so much easier to focus their practice efforts on weak spots. I think the skill level of the pro player base is going to go way up because of this.
Not to mention never having to worry about disconnects, drops and technical problems that can affect an important match anymore. Huge.
Good job Blizzard, but now you've got to add other things to the game, that will make the playing and viewing experience better. I think the developers have learned their lesson from the unhappiness from the community and won't ignore such important demands ever again for such a long time.

Unless there's a power outage which makes all the replays of the ongoing match corrupt
Yeah the resume from replay feature will save us from re-games in tournaments, but also will make training for pros much more efficient. Like if a pro wants to practice some late game stuff, they no longer have to waste the 15 mins macroing up to that point. It's a pretty game changing feature.
Changed the title to reflect the specific features announced.

For reference this exists in BW too (though in a different form, you have to save/reload games) and no one ever used it for training for some reason. Hopefully people can learn some cool tricks with it this time around.

Yeah, this is really the kind of behavior I would expect in a beta, not a retail product.
To be fair they don't just "drop" you, they let you finish up the game you're in and then it just doesn't let you start another one.
I think the meta is going to elvolve at a much faster rate. Now to test an idea in the late game you do not need to play perfectly for 20 minutes to get to that scenario, just load the game up and test to your hearts content.
As EIMeanYo said the skill ceiling is probably going to skyrocket.
In the thread on bnet it says the extended maintenance is up to 24hrs. Can anyone verify if the HotS server is up yet? Or is there anyway to check it aside from logging into the game? Thanks for any input on this.
alright blade, i take back what i said about HotS on facebook... hahaha. I thought this shit wouldn't come out forever but the fact that it's available now is amazing!
This will greatly help players, and particularly progamers, refine mid and late-game strategies and tactics. Also the ability to resume dropped games looks like a neat workaround to some of the issues created by the lack of LAN.

Not only are these replay features in, the extremely high technology needed to allow players to save and load games has finally been met through the replay Take Command and Recover Game XD
The having a seperate "resume from replay" and "continue dropped game" options just sounds clunky for 2 ways to essentially do the same thing in a specific corner case. I understand why there has to be 2 ways to go about it (don't want Jaedong to see Flash's hidden expansion if the game drops before they GG out!) ... but it just feels clunky.
I don't have a better answer, and don't get me wrong I greatly approve of having these features in place, but there should be a slightly more elegant solution out there somewhere. Good stuff brewing though!

They probably are the same chain of functions, if that's what you're getting at.
taking command at any time in a given replay is definitely huge! This gives opportunity to make practice a lot more efficient regarding build practice or exploring tactics in a certain scenario. Also, this can prevent any online (no lan-) disasters.
So happy for all the future tournaments that don't have to be ruined/tainted by DC fiascos. LAN would be nice of course, but this is still a huuuuuuge improvement. Really glad they made this happen.
seems like a good patch, I will force my friends to watch my games sometimes. I hope the beta comes back online soon, this is my only day off all week.
It's hard to be happy about these "new" features with HOTS around the corner... to me it seems like they intentionally waited to implement the features until the relase of the expansion. Guess I'll never know for sure.
It's patching now. But still 0% for 5 minutes already is this normal? does changing the default language affect this? Because I've been playing with Korean texts for almost a week.
But I think no? Because there's only 1 server for HotS atm right? also.. is it really an 8.4 GB patch O__O. My patcher says its 8.41 GB

to rewrite the whole game it would take much longer to programm it... The patch is just big its not the whole game again.
I still don't understand why it took them like 6 years to somewhat have the battle.net like the good old days... Sharing replays with friend existed in BW, but quickly shut down like 2 patches later ?...
this new feature will make practicing even easier. Think about how pro's will utilize this... Their time spent practicing might as well be reduced dramatically. And also, new strategies and increase in experience of decision-making will make pro's even more pro.
People will master critical situation by using this feature. All you have to do is realize your mistake and take it from there. Explore enough options until you can find the right solution to any given problem. It's like math made easy now.

Yes, but they haven't been uploaded yet.
I dont think they will have any balance changes. So far it seems the software design team changes, are being released independently of the balance team changes.
For those eagerly anticipating the arrival of the patch, it appears that the beta client will allow you to download it right now. A Whopping 9 GB update, I recommend getting it started asap and putting a show on
they add the new dance and even the skin. But I don't know to unlcok it
Oh I meant to say balance patch. Dunno thought they said there would be some balance changes but obviously not considering there aren't any posted T_T. Hopefully tomorrow.

Same as with Relocalizer, in Heart of the Swarm you can have any voice asset and text assets, that are available only in your region (i.e. Korean - only korean text and any voice pack, etc). In the HOTS beta there is 4 available languages: english (US), french (FR), deutsch (DE) and korean (KR). These languages you can install officially without any specific steps, just go to your account page and download prefered game client.

As I said, you can have region restricted text localization (Korea? Only Korean text. Europe? Only european UI localizations then) and ANY voices (you can have korean voice pack in Europe, english voices in Korean, espanol queen in America or vice versa)
Cool that they finally do this, but me and my friends would have needed this at WoL release, when we actually played the game. :/ Sure, better late than never, but not that much better actually. The vast majority of the people that bought the game are not playing at all, or very little, at this time, and will not benefit.
Maybe I should just buy all blizzard games like 2 years after release, when it is patched into a good game...

Hmm this isn't like previous patches where you didn't need to download the whole patch for the game to be playable guess I'm not playing tonight.
Edit: Holy crap nvm! Just as I said that my play button lit up. I guess the "yellow" part of the loading bar was just not specified properly but seems like you can start playing when around 7.8GB is left still. I actually kind of wonder if all the single player assets are in the beta because if the game is truly playable with that much data undownloaded and the only thing you download when you join a game is maps, I really have no idea what all that data is for.

This is weird... I have never had trouble with lag while playing SC2... WOL or HOTS Beta... until now. Maybe I'll redownload to see if that will fix it. But I have never experienced this before and was wondering if I was the only one.

I have that too. German Client. Everytime I start the launcher it shows for 1 second that the launcher does an upgrade. Even after the tenth start. So it seems to be a bug. I try to reinstall now.
What a cool feature this will be. Its been a long time since the idea was first on the table (I believe WoL Beta) and now its finally there. I'm really looking forward to this. It will be so easy for people to train say 2gate vs 2rax bunker pressure. Just download the reference replay from your favorite sc2 site (spoiler: It's TL!) fast forward and hit the play button. Safes so much time when you do it 5 or more times in a row until you find the perfect bunker placement.

Or say start a Parting vs Zerg replay at 8:50, right when he pushes out with 3 immortal, 7 sentry, 1 stalker (wprism+obs queued, 7 warpgates ready soon). Will let you practice the actual micro involved, and the zerg you're playing against will have had perfect injects / timings of everything too, so you're playing in realistic ideal situation. Helpful for either player, as a learning tool or improved method of practice.
Wow, that game got better and better in a quite short amount of time, half a year ago I didn't even want to buy hots at all and now I just want to take a week off and hammer out beta games.
Ok so it seems you need a minimum of two real players to Take Control from replays otherwise the replay will end in a victory as the other player "leaves".
Is there any way to have an AI play out the remaining actions of the unused slot? Otherwise this would be a slight disappointment.
Apparently you have to download all 8.4gb of the patch or else you'll get an Invalid Login error implying you don't have Beta Access. Can anyone confirm? Haven't finished downloading but wanted to see the skins and dances
I just patched my beta installation (de version) with an 8,5 gb patch, after that I couldn't login due to the "wrong version of sc2". I noticed in the options menu that as "what version do you want to use for multiplayer" WoL was selected, but I couldn't change it, e.g. select hots as multiplayer.
So I figured, as stated in this thread a few pages before, that you need to have the us client installed to connect to the NA beta servers. So i uninstalled the beta, deleted all the agents and downloaded the us client installation file via battle.net account management. And now it won't install - "failed to download a required update. please check your internet connection and try again."
any ideas? i disabled the windows firewall etc. pp. i am clueless
There are a lot of bugs in the game currently, I imagine a fixing patch or something coming later in the day unless they just ignore until something bigger is released ~ ;;

I still don't exactly get what the difference between take control of replay and resume replay is. I get that the resume can only be made with exact same players but why not just watch the replay up to this point and take control with the exact same people?
The only difference I can think of is that when taking control of a replay there won't be a new replay file afterwards to watch while with resume you get a "complete" replay afterwards. Is this even a little bit close? :p
The new soundeffect when the "victory screen" apears is way too loud isnt it?
my ingame/fighting sounds are normal but this new sound blows my head away everytime. Also i dont like the new loud sound when zergunits finished morphing. i always think i have to inject because it sounds like the new larves.

Resume replay is basically a specialized version for tournaments. Don't have to worry about players saying anything they shouldn't and it makes the process go a bit smoother. Take control is what the average player will be using 99% of the time.

In a tournament setting you do not want the players to be able to use observer commands like they would be able to when viewing the reply to take control. For example, if someone is dropped or their client crashes and they may see that 3 DT's had just been warped into their base while the replay is moving to the correct time, or they may notice that the opponent has a ninja expand. Then when the game resumes they can just position things accordingly. Or they may be able to hit D to see that the opponent is building 3 carriers. LAN Tournaments could have a admin do the fast-forwarding but this is overall a better solution since it can work with little intervention and for online tournaments too.

-training vs AI & 1v/2v AI (still only 3 types of AI) -resume & recover replay (works only on new replays) -watching replay very optimized, it doesnt lag hard on x2 x4 x8 for older PCs -portraits for race lvls "works" (placeholders, but not too bad) -decals changed -skins (Thor and Ultra, I'm not sure if you can get other skins, same for dances) -fonts ingame are smaller -at loading screen you can see levels, portrait boarders and clan -clan tag visible ingame while typing/poiting at players unit -groups have icons -polished UI in menus -a sound after victory
-menus are very laggy (possibly while chat open) -you cant see other players levels in lobby at all -loading of players isnt displayed?
I am having the same error with the German version of the HotS patch. Also I cannot start WOL anymore. Is it just the German version, or are any other versions affected? Can anybody use the German version at all?
This is pretty awesome stuff, better late that never. I want to thank DJWheat for talking about this on his shows many times. I think Wheat is the only one blizzard listens too lol.
We tried the patch on a second PC, and it gives the same error. I strongly suspect that this effects all German installations.
I contacted the Blizzard support, but they were not very helpful. Saying that they do not officially support beta products, and that I should reinstall WoL. :-(
edit, beaten to the punch line. Resuming replays should be really good to figure out new builds. if you're wondering "can my build hold this particular all-in? just play from the time the all-in starts over and over. sharing replays, will be tight too. Let's see what the balance patch brings

Yeah but LoL dominates viewer numbers, like it's not even close. Just one TSM member gathers more viewers daily than most sc2 major events. I think Liquid should look into the professional LoL scene imo.

Actually since there's roughly twice the amount of SC2 tournies... it's about right if LoL has average 2 times the viewers as SC2 events

Pretty sure that's not how it works. I think it really just comes down to how huge LoL is, the player base is massive so there are potentially more viewers.

The NFL viewership destroys golf’s viewership, which is higher than tennis. Just because Starcraft 2 is not the top of the charts does not mean anything and does not diminish our enjoyment of watching and playing the game. I play LoL with friends and my girlfriend, all who have no problem switching over to a SC2 game in the middle of IEM.

200k viewers from multi dozen millions of players is a lot less impressive than our 100k viewers from like 1 or 2 Millions player pool.

While that is true, it has no relevence at all. LoL is more profitable because it has more viewers, the reason WHY it has more viewers just doesn't matter.

Yeah but LoL dominates viewer numbers, like it's not even close. Just one TSM member gathers more viewers daily than most sc2 major events. I think Liquid should look into the professional LoL scene imo.
Of course, they have over 10 Millions active accounts and they have stream in the game, of course there will be more viewers.
Well...I don't disagree with you at all.
So you want blizzard to find ways to artificially increase the viewer numbers... and make the game free to play? Because that's as much you can learn from LoL.

Why does this community always compare SC2 vs LoL? They're two different games, and appeal to different types of people / gamers. Stop whining about viewership / death of SC2 and just enjoy the game... So what is SC2 is smaller? Doesn't reduce your enjoyment of the game does it?
High Viewer numbers can also harm you, it is also important how you acquired them (atleast for someone who wants to invest money and plans to get more out of it). It is great what LoL did, but they won't take over the world and become the only e-sport, atleast not with from where the majority of their viewers come from. I also remember that there are other games aside from football left in this world.
Anyway LoL will probably stay and will keep their "aye we are better cuz we gots more viewers" bragging rights. Until someone else can dangle a new shiny pvp replacement coin in front of the MMO communities.
Not sure if anyone posted this yet, but seems like they are back messing with APM. I haven't watched a replay to see what it is doing during that point, but I've been looking at the score reports after games.
Before this update usually my APM would be like 15-20, which I know isn't right. I know I'm not 200s but 15-20 is like... if I used no keyboard and only my mouse. Now I just got done playing and really haven't paid attention but after this last game I went to the score report and my APM was 695. Now for the record, I wish my APM was 695 because I'd probably be able to make a few bucks playing this game. However, I know it is not.
Why is this the hardest thing for blizzard to get right?
Replay resume and watching with friends is very cool. But personally I like the most that they optimized replay watching. I basically couldnt watch x2 and faster before. Now I can watch my replays fast and i dont have to worry about slowing other people while watching replay.
I got the region bug. Deleted both WoL and hots, then re-install. Still get the region bug. Delete only hots this time and now it wont even start downloading the game, it's just stuck on"Initializing..."

I think you need to make sure you've deleted everything. Not enough just deleting the game. Had some similar problems once, and I deleted and re installed, still didtn work. Then I deleted all the other files I found on the computer of SC2 and it worked

Actually since there's roughly twice the amount of SC2 tournies... it's about right if LoL has average 2 times the viewers as SC2 events
Pretty sure that's not how it works. I think it really just comes down to how huge LoL is, the player base is massive so there are potentially more viewers.
Of course, but saturation of tournaments is a factor too. You can't watch all of them.

This is probably because they are messing around with the replay functionality. Its only natural that stats that depend on the replays will be messed up for a period of time. This is why its beta, so report it to blizzard and it will be fixed for release.

I got the region bug at first attempt. Didn't even know it was a known issue. I just tabbed out a couple times and in like 2-3 minutes the "warning window" was gone and i was able to login. Can't promise this will work for you, but maybe give a try!
Good Patch from the design. BUT the physic wont work for me anymore-.- So i cant see roaches splash and so on. I can put it on extreme but it wont matter. I have an I7 processor and a GTX670 +8gb ram ddr3 1600mhz can someone help me its a huge prob :D ?

Restart it. I had to restart my download to get back to my normal 1.1 mb per sec download.
Damn. Now i finished the download, but at some point of the game, i simply drop out. And when i want to log in after that, nothing works, no single button. So i cant even try out the new functions, it would take me years to get to them. Anyone has the same problems? At the pro streams, everything runs smoothly, ot just here.

yeah i got 14mb/sec over here so its quite normal. Had do start the installer 4x before that, cause it was constantly saying "could not read required file"

What happens?
All the commands are saved in the replay, so it should be quite the same if you go download it or have it played urself.
I feel like I have just been introduced to the wonders of Fire. We had this kind of technology for so damn long, the fact that it has only been implemented now is a little insulting lol. I, for one, hope these efforts on Blizzard's part work out without a hitch. In the event of the replay or resume functions bugging out, I don't know what I would think.
I was very firm in my decision that I made to not buy HotS. But since Blizz has finally decided to listen to the community, and seem to be genuinely trying to please the masses (plus that new trailer OMG). Yeah they can take my money. Cant wait to play now.
ability to watch replays with others, take command of those replays at any point in the game, and also allow the ability to recover games dropped to technical or network issues.
and tecnology finally arrives, guys!!
YEs technology from Sc:BW arrives , only lan missing still whatever........
After watching husky I was wondering if you can change control groups before you take over? Not everyone has the same setup and it will be silly having to change them all right at the start of the resume.

Don't think there is, but I agree there should be an option to use current replay hotkeys or your own hotkeys before taking control of a replay. They just need to add a checkmark box with those two options when you select the take control option and it'll fix the issue.
sooo was trying to get on Hots, and got the patch update, and was like ok ok cool, then i saw the total downloading remaining, 8GB, is this a glitch or something?

This is a client patch, this time you need to redownload 8 gigabytes.
Hmm... the hotkey thing really bugs me out. I love how you can resume from replay but damn, being thrown into a game where the hotkeys are fucked up is hard :D Would love it if the timer were extended to like 10 seconds but you could move freely during that time and rehotkey things.
