We don't get a lot of a player's personality in a game like SC2, and it's pretty unfortunate because a lot of the entertainment in a competitive environment comes from the clash of personalities. Giving pros an avenue to express themselves creatively, which has zero physical effect on the gameplay, would go a long way to changing that. One thing I haven't seen suggested here is different building portraits. Which is in a way weird because it's the portrait we're most likely to see in any given game, over and over. It totally represents the player's army... and they have absolutely no say over it. Right now all we have is the Adjutant for Terrans, Executor for Protoss, and an Overlord for Zerg. At the very least that list could be expanded to include a human commander for T, a DT Matriarch for P, and a Cerebrate for Z. But I wouldn't mind seeing it expanded to include single player generals: Raynor, Mengsk, Warfield, Kerrigan/Artanis, Zeratul, Selendis/Kerrigan, the Overmind, Infested Tychus (or whoever), and so on. Or they could get creative. Why not a Mengsk hologram instead of the man himself? For the Protoss, a Dark Archon or even a Xel'Naga. And I've used almost exclusively existing assets, meaning this wouldn't even have to take any work apart from coding. It could, if Blizzard wanted to go above and beyond, but it wouldn't have to to start. As mentioned in the rest of the thread, slight differences in unit or building models, different unit portraits to pick from - not just for buildings; maybe all of MKP's Marines have the portrait of a Marine with a skull visor - different color themes for units and buildings. All of this would help make the players stand out more from one another at the pro level and build an iconic image outside of gameplay.

Skins reduce readability and increases the chance of joke models, like tauren marines being usable in serious play, It would be fine, possibly even beneficial, if it can be turned off from a player's perspective.

Is anyone confused by CE Thors? Or, in HOTS, CE Ultralisks? And those aren't just different skins, those are different models.

Exactly, this is right on the money, new skins would be epic I can't believe every sc2 fan boy isn't jumping on this, everyone went crazy and they removed the war hound, lets go crazy again and get some tight skins

I believe that you can't see CE units if you have the standard edition of the game, even if other people have the CE. This could be wrong, but I've never ever seen a CE Thor in game. And that's exactly how it should work. I don't care what model you use or have access to. But I don't want to see it. Standardized models are better. It's neater, and increases readability.

So again, when was the last time you heard someone - anyone - complain that they couldn't tell what unit was on the field? I understand that most of the people in this thread would be perfectly OK with your compromise between adding new art and keeping the game readable... but I really think the biggest potential in this customization is for pro players, not me and you. So I would damn well want to see it in casts and replays.

So I would damn well want to see it in casts and replays. I never said it makes the game unreadable. It merely makes it marginally less readable. It also doesn't look good. The game would look better if all units of the same type, look the same. It also opens up the potential for joke models. There are already joke decals and joke portraits from CEs and special events. If you look at Dota 2, most of the heroes look like jokes now because of the customization. So this is a real slippery slope that other games have actually gone down. I also don't see how this would help pros. In fact, having multiple models for the same units would hurt pros by reducing readability. But pros will be able to deal with it. More than anything it hurts casual viewers. They'll be like: Wtf is that unit? Now there's 5 different brood lord models? O rly? For example, that lurker/defiler-like unit at the bottom-left of the zerg screenshot in the OP, I legitimately have no idea what that's suppose to be. If it's true that everyone can see CE units, then that's bad and should be fixed. Standardization > Customization
