Sc2 is a great RTS + an appeal to the masses (with a proven idea) = a wise business move. A wise Blizzard move = a wise move for the community.
So I'll try not to rain on this parade. As long as Blizzard keeps this on an Aesthetic basis (skins/designs/avatars), it won't effect me AT ALL. In fact, all the power to them and to the community. (I'll buy HoTS it either way) but the very moment they start giving players with Exp an advantage by knowing the "game" outside of the "game".. I'll become overrun by stats/numbers and options and won't be having much fun. LoL, for me, was a game of Excel sheets. I just couldn't get past the number of modifications you could do... before your even playing.

yeah , bet they will take the community seriously. +1
Is that really fair to say? Most of the posts i have read on TL today are positive.
Incoming title in strat forums: "[G]Zerg guide to bronze by a lvl 99 player"

What about simple customizable flags / banners next to your bases? That wouldn't interfere with anything and be able to be very personal.

I hope levels mean something, similar to the way they did in pre 1.14 WC3 vice the system they had after that. No, it means nothing. It's a progression system, it always goes up, never goes down. It's not a ranking system like WC3's level system, which is basically like SC2s league system (just with 50 leagues instead of 7).
It means nothing that's exactly the way to should be designed.
This is NOTHING like WC3. WC3 levels were a RANK, it goes up if you win and down if you lose, it was used to rank players. This is a progression system, it is NOT used to rank.
MMR measures skill. Levels measure time played.

This is an excellent idea. I've suggested it a few times.
Good for casuals and hardcore players alike, no one loses. It would be good if they added unlockable backgrounds for the B.net lobby too.

Coming from world of warcraft, it blew my mind seeing what some people were willing to go through in order to get certain acheivements. Reward? None.
WoW is also a much bigger game, despite having no esports scene to speak of. If the sc2 team can incorporate some of that allure in this game, I think everyone stands to benefit from it.
Worst case scenario it does nothing at all, which isn't bad for a worst case scenario imo.

I really don't like that this will affect how some people choose to play the game. Containing a player on one base, taking the map, maxing, killing your army, and then remaxing just to get more exp seems horrible. I like the idea of leveling and unlocking stuff, but I really don't think anything you do in game should affect it. As much as I don't like cheese, people shouldn't be discouraged from cheesing by outside factors, or encouraged to macro for that matter. Actually, I agree with this.
It should just be based off game length with a very small amount of diminishing returns as the game goes on so that people are not incentivized to stay in losing games.

Looks like a great idea Achievements is a great idea.
I wish there were a separate ladder for each race though, ie I'd be diamond Terran, platinum Protoss and gold Zerg on one account. It would encourage me to play more, cause I'd want to get everything up to the same level!

I support this. I wish they wouldn't add this as part of a paid expansion. I feel like a lot of the features in HotS should be available in WoL.
|
Excellent point from the Reddit thread
People keep saying we deserve x feature or y feature but remember that Blizzard don't just have an unlimited amount of money and resources. and even if they did they aren't going to spend the money into creating features if they aren't going to get any extra revenue from it. From a business sense it make much more sense for Blizzard to add all the features people have been asking for in HoTS and not in WoL, just because they aren't going to get as much money from putting it in WoL (a game that people already have bought).
They most likely have been planning most of the features we have been asking for for awhile, but are just waiting till HoTS so that they have the budget to implement them (and get a better profit)

just so awesome. nothing negative about it and good for casuals. exactly what has to be done (among other things obviously).

This XP thing would only appeal to bronze casuals who don't do such things as "taking the map" or "remaxing". If it could discourage same bronze/silver people from cheesing too much then it would be a very good thing, as cheese is most frustrating to play against in low leagues and a major refrain from laddering in the mind of most casual players (which can make them quit the game).
All other players (including me) won't care at all and just play normal games as they did in WoL.
Such changes are GREAT for the game to appeal to a larger audience and keep people playing without altering the high level gaming experience the slightest. Blizzard just needs to make sure low leaguers won't cripple themselves by using special farming strats designed to exploit these new XP rules, but that should be OK after some beta tuning.
Increased accessibility and friendliness is the best thing that could happen to the game, let's rejoice!
Thank you Blizzard.

A step in the right direction good job blizz.

People who are being negative -- stop sucking at life. Most people want this.
Hats off to you blizzard, way to listen to the community and make some good changes.

They should let you watch streams of major tournaments in client and slowly gain xp as you do. (I imagine there are more people than expected that casually play sc2 but have never been on tl, never watched gsl, never watched a live weekend tournament, potentially this could get people who care about xp to get into watching sc.)

When was it a good game?

All this idea is just a wasted development time imo.

Looks cool. I would like to see unlockable player banners (like on buildings) and possibly custom skins for units (like the Thor wings from the limited edition).
It would be cool to be able to field an army that, while performing exactly like everyone else's, looked completely custom.

Is the patch coming today?
