POSSIBLE SPOILER! This is a guide to a minigame in the campaign which has no relation whatsoever to the storyline, but some people might not want to see this anyway.
So once you start playing the campaign missions, you'll get access to the Cantina and be able to play "The Lost Viking" minigame. It's a scrolling space shooter, reminiscent of similar games made in the 90s.
In case you're wondering why you should play it at all, it's a nice distraction and there are achievements to be won. You get an achievement for scoring 125,000, 250,000, and 500,000 points in it. You also get an achievement for killing the final boss, but since that happens every 3 levels and you need to play about 9 waves to get 500k points, that will happen regardless of what you do. The game itself is somewhat fun, albeit very repetitive.
I got 500,000 points on my first try and it takes about an hour and a half. It got pretty difficult to fight the boredom near the end, but I knew what I was getting myself into. You can't check achievements in game, so either memorize the score benchmarks or pause the minigame and alt-tab to look up the score levels.
Quick guide:
The best weapon loadout I could find is the double plasma + double drones. Plasma is way better at killing bosses and keeping drones alive allows you to deal with normal enemies.
Your main weapon is either the dinky default gun, the side missiles, or the plasma. Both of those can be upgraded once by picking up the same upgrade again. For example, pick up the "side missiles", then pick it up one more time to have the upgraded version. Future pickups don't do anything.
If you're using the side missiles and pick up the plasma, you will switch to level 1 plasma. Same thing if you have plasma and switch to the side missiles.
Item drops are random, and rotate over time in a set sequence. The order is: side missile, drone, plasma, bomb.
You can hold two drones at any time. More drone pickups do not do anything. If you get hit by most weapons (some boss attacks instantly kill you), it will destroy one of your drones. If you have no drones left when you are hit, you die.
If you die, you drop your main weapon upgrades as pickups.
Bombs clear most of the screen of enemies and projectiles and give you a short duration of invincibility.
Almost always use a bomb instead of risking a hit. Losing drones drastically hurts your ability to deal damage, ESPECIALLY in boss fights.
Boss guide The carrier (first boss) is very straightforward. The interceptors don't do anything for most of their life, but fire a few projectiles before they retreat. Then the carrier fires a constant rotating beam. Start out in the middle, then pick a side and move that way when it starts firing.
The corruptor (2nd boss) has tendrils that instantly kill you. Using a bomb will destroy tendrils headed towards you and make you invincible. Strafing away from the first tendril almost always is safe. It also will rush you with an instant kill ability.
The last boss has several difficult to dodge projectile attacks, and on harder difficulties fires a bouncing blade. I'd make sure I have bombs going into this boss fight- usually only 2 or 3 is necessary for a pretty easy win. Just blow the bombs before projectiles hit you.
This is pretty cool. I didn't have the patience to play for that long but it's neat to know what the achievement thresholds are. Btw, this isn't really a plot spoiler or anything, but it probably couldn't hurt to put your post in spoiler tags and mention it comes from the campaign.
Sorry for digging this topic up, but couldn't get back to the viking game when i finished the game. Is there any other way to play it back again or do i've to restart all the missions and lose all my achievement too ?

You can just save your campaign and start a new one.
As a fan of good shmup games, I found lost viking to be practically unplayable. The slow movement, unresponsive controls(for some reason I couldn't move diagonally and fire at the same time) and the massive hit box literally had me yelling at the game. I'm really glad I didn't try and get the achievements if it takes an hour and a goddamn half. What were they thinking? It was good of you to provide this guide, I hope it'll help relieve the stress achievement whores will likely endure playing it.
while plasma may do more damage, i found that the side missiles are alot safer. you dont have to aim at anything, just dodge and youll still kill everything in every level. boss runs are slightly slower, but i think its worth it considering how much faster non-boss enemies get cleared out
also i got disconnected from bnet at some point between 250,000 and 500,000. had to redo everything for gold :/

It's strange but the controls were fine for me on Lost Viking (I could move diagonally and shoot, too). However, on a Touhou custom map back in the beta, I had the same problem (and a few other ones too) where the lag between hitting a movement key and the unit actually moving was unbearably bad.
I found plasma to be better for the protoss/zerg levels (NEVER use side missiles on zerg, the mass scourge detonations will kill you) while side missiles are good for terran. (otherwise you can easily get overwhelmed by Wraiths)
Problem with side missiles is, they take forever to kill the Terra Tron on higher difficulties, and you can run out of bombs and get killed.
Dude I got killed at 460k..... wow the terran mission on 3rd run is impossible with lasers. If you lose your drones on 3rd zerg, get ready to lose some lives unless you manage to get more drones or switch to missiles... good luck all, I quit this shit viking game.
The gold viking has to be the hardest achievment in the game, what a pain.
And controls are totally unresponsive and laggy here too. As if it wasn't hard enough.

LOL, I found it really hard when I played on my laptop because it was unresponsive and laggy. But then I upgraded my desktop and it runs fine. On my desktop I actually found it to be super easy to get gold. I think it needs a little bit of processor to run, because I think it's made using the Galaxy editor and is running in the RTS engine.
I fucking died at 400k. Perfect run until I missed a bomb at the 2nd terratron, and then I kept losing lives and upgrades. Killed it, but started the third protoss with 0 lives...managed to get through, but then got killed by scourge mass in the zerg level. aksjgh;lasdfwawv
Dude I feel your pain, definitely, but now no more! I finally managed to get the 500k: + Show Spoiler +
Not satisfied, I went a little further and played a bit more of the game, more relaxed this time... + Show Spoiler +
Died at the Leviathan of level 17 or something like that. If there was a diamond achievement, and thank god there isn't, I would probably have gotten it. What an annoying game though. The autofire could be faster.
Guys, just use the side missiles. You have them when the drones get shot and you just really don't have to mind the aiming.
Anywhere you are on the screen you will be killing stuff. I found that I made higher scores on the levels and also killed stuff FASTER than with the laser (except for end level bosses) because I didn't have to stand in front of battlecruisers or whatever to make damage to it.
PS: my friend just told me he used a macro program called "Macro Express Pro", the trial version and it was a breeze because he didn't have to bang space all the time. Wish I knew about this 3 hours ago. Cheers.
What made this far more manageable for me was this simple AHK macro. Makes it play more like a bullet hell, hold space and dodge (and it fires far faster than you're likely going to be able to). It can bug out on bombs, however, so either bomb again (which usually fixes it for me) or pause and reload the script:
Played 3 hours straight, got way farther than 500k, but battle.net was down when I hit 500k >_>
The hardest parts of this game are: - figuring out that tapping the fire key will fire faster than holding it - fighting the boredom of this stupidly easy game
Sure, it may be hard to keep yourself alive after the 4th run in the 3rd stage due to boredom... ...except if you use bombs. The game gives you So many of them, you can usually spend one to collect three or four.
Seriously considering never getting the Lost Viking Gold achievement, it's just TOO BORING.
You know you can hold down spacebar to autofire right?
Also use the side missiles, you'll kill more enemies = get points faster and also makes the levels easier (the bosses aren't that difficult except sometimes the terratron has annoying attack patterns).
You'll use up more invincibility bombs on the zerg stage cause of all the scourge but you should be able to get through three runs no problem, and get the achievement before fighting the terratron the third time.

yes the space bar has auto fire, but you shoot much faster and therefore get points faster by spamming the space bar.
Does anyone know why I lag on lost viking? I can play SC2 with almost all settings maxed I thought it might be my cpu since it sucks I have hd 4850 with athlon x2 240 tried tweaking graphic settings to no avail

Dude try playing on low and on a window, instead of fullscreen. I made it a small window and it became better. I have athlon x2 5400+ cpu (never planned on playing games).
This should help. But I played on normal after and got the achievement even with the lag. You get used to it I think.
I preferred going Plasma the whole way because I find I lose lives to bosses far more than to the general mobs. It's also much easier to bomb your way through the levels if you meet trouble (and pick up more) than slowly chip away at a boss (for me, in any case) and try not to run out.
If ou can't move diagonally and shoot, it's probably a hardware limitation on your keyboard - some keyboards can only register 2 simultaneous key presses, some can register 3. It's rare that a keyboard can register more than 3.

If you have a ps2 keyboard it should be able to register any number of key presses. this is because ps2 keyboards send CPU interrupts and USB keyboards have to be polled
I'd like to promote Phenrei's script on the first page for everyone new attempting to get the achievements.
On my first few tries, I couldn't even get past the lvl 2 Leviathan, but after reading this thread and using Phenrei's script and this program http://www.autohotkey.com/docs/Tutorial.htm, I did 500k in about 45 minutes without any trouble (finished on lvl 9, before reaching the third Terratron).
I had 7 lives and 20 bombs left before I quit. I lost a total of 2 lives, both on the first Terratron, because I didn't use bombs, but since you have so many, use them whenever you're about to get hit! (When the screen is full of the green zerg bubbles or Terratron's helpers' bullets). It's easier to get back bombs than drones. I used 2x side missiles and drones for the whole time.
know this is an old topic, but i found a slightly different way to get the achievements that take advantage of a glitch which i wondered if it was unique to my system or potentially could help everyone.
basically in the zerg level simply don't kill both guardians and rack up kills (and powerups) on the scourge. eventually the guardians are supposed to fly away, but i found this aspect to frequently glitch allowing for infinite enemies (and thus powerups, points, and lives). often times the guardian remaining even stops shooting at you.
this method still takes forever, but when you suck at killing the bosses as much as i do, this method makes the points achievements much easier (though you still gotta struggle through actually beating the zerg and terran bosses for the boss killing achievement).

Shame there's no mac version of autohotkey.
I tired writing a script in Applescript, which almost worked, but ended up almost blowing my computer up because I couldn't stop the spacebar spam or click on anything else. Had to force-restart.
Does anyone know a mac alternative to this? (or a better way to do it in applescript?)
By the time I had gotten the bronze achievement, I was already bored to death, but I knew I had to keep going, because the last thing I wanted to do was go through those agonizing 125K points again to get up to gold, so I just did it all in one sitting. I thought the side missiles were best, they allowed me to get more normal enemies than plasma, and you can still be shooting the bosses while dodging.
