Against Germany Portugal was caught tactically but stil put up a fight and it was a very entertaining match. VS France, Portugal was the better team for at least the first half. Last night Portugal were the more threatening team in the match, despite not scoring. We're talking about the last two world cup winners and the first ranked team in FIFA atm as opponents, while all other teams have faced much poorer opposition. All PT matches were great entertainment, unlike the Euro 2016. We got to see one of the greatest players ever being a beast at age 36, we got to see Renato Sanches rise up from the ashes again to boss the midfield vs Kanté and Pogba, and we saw Nelson Semedo trying to keep up with Goosens like a headless chicken due to tactical mistakes from Fernando Santos. Obviously Portuguese fans like me are sad, but overall the Euro is a little less entertaining for everyone. I mean, you're still having a Sweden-Ukraine in the round of 16 and a Czech Republic vs Denmark quarter-final. These teams are several notches below. Sorry but I have seen another game it seems. A game where Portugal should have only 10 players left to end the game ... Portugal that took 87 minutes to score against the oh so mighty powerhouse Hungary ... That got declassed by a non-top form playing Germany with ease ... I rather have Ukraine vs Sweden than a Portugal from 2016 lucking their way to OT/pens, Portugal that couldn't win a game in regular time the whole tournament. Don't understand why people are saying Belgium is not good while they have more than just one top player. Belgium is top in rankings for a reason.

Our defenders are getting older and don't play at top tier clubs but they're still really good. Vermaelen owned Ronaldo. Only 1 goal conceded this tournament yet and it was due to a mistake from Jason Denayer who won't be fielded again unless two of the above mentioned drop out (assuming Boyata would be first choice sub). So the back line of our squad is solid. The front 3 is Hazard, Lukaku, KDB. Best front 3 in the tournament? Depends how Hazard performs on the night but if he plays like last night then for sure, no other team comes close. So where are we overrated, midfield? Witsel and Tielemans are great players, Thorgan Hazard and Meunier too. Honestly how can you call a team like this overrated? Easily the best 11 in the tournament on paper. Of course now that Hazard is out injured and potentially KDB too it changes a lot but come on, this team is underrated if anything. Should be #1 on any prediction. On paper a top 3 team for sure. Actually playing on the field not so much top 3 if you ask me. But hey, they've got another chance to prove themselves now. That game vs Portugal could have gone easily the other way and it would be deserved because both teams played rather poor. Belgium was just a bit more lucky with scoring

You should also agree that France and Germany are top teams. Therefore, you should agree that a team that almost knocks out Germany and draws vs France was playing well. And also that playing at the level of France and Belgium makes Portugal quite good too. Finally, regarding the entertainment value, here's what the Guardian (picking a random source) had to say about each of the Portugal group games: Portugal v Hungary "Portugal dominated from start to finish [...]. it was certainly a deserved win." Portugal v Germany "This was the tournament’s best game so far " Portugal v France "thrilling draw with France"; "epic contest in Budapest" @deacon.frost "Portugal ended third in their group. What kind of system do you propose so Portugal doesn't meet anybody strong? " The criticism is on how the groups were made up. One group had 3 of the top6 teams, while others only had 1.5 top teams at most.

Tbh I'm fairly confident Courtois would've saved Thorgan's shot yesterday.

I dont think any portugese player was so happy with this game. 3 -> drawing because france knew a draw is enough to be first And sorry, Portugal looked non-threatening against belgium. Ronaldo must have been gifted a penalty to equalize in that game.

Scroll down to the "overall ranking" section to see how this was made possible. France topped their qualifying group but did so less convincingly than 6 other nations. Hence as a 7th, they got lumped in with another country that won their group. In this case Germany. Portugal finished 2nd behind Ukraine and had a bad seeding, 13th. If they hadn't been beaten by Ukraine or gotten 1-2 more points during qualifying then they would have been 1st/2nd pot instead of 3rd and could not have been part of the group of death. So really both France and Portugal should've just done better during qualifiers and the only team that got really screwed here is Germany since they qualified well and still ended up in a group of death. I don't think anything is wrong with this system. Play well during qualifiers and get rewarded with being the top seed in group phase. France and especially Portugal just didn't play well in qualifiers. e: Someone above said that three top 6 teams should not have been in the same group, but the reality is that based on qualifiers Germany was #4, France was #7 and Portugal was #13, them being in the same group based on those positions is perfectly fine.

The seeding needs to be based mostly on the effort and results in qualifier. Also it's a Cup system and the randomess is part of the beauty. Not everything is fair but not like the favorites always win like we saw with Holland. Maybe the winner will again be an underdog.

I hope it is OK to post here because these 2 songs are played at every single game. I include a little surprise for Messi fans near the end of the video. I hope you like it!
