Oh yeah, let's all pity France.

They must face the allmighty Swiss (3rd place finisher with a stunning group stage performance), and then, oh horror, might have to play Spain, the team which placed behind Sweden, who are supposedly the freebie of the lower half of the bracket...

Or we might play Croatia, finalist of world cup 2018 and still a scary team with Modric. How can you even deny that the top half is far more stacked than bottom?

Croatia wasn't very impressive in the group stage though? Modric had one good game, yeah. But otherwise? Didn't look like a great team. They are similar to Germany in that regard I guess.

Being impressive in the group stages doesn't mean you are gonna perform well in the playoffs, and the contrary as well. Portugal had a shitty group stages phase in 2016 and look what happened. Same for France in 2018.
The most likely thing to happen is that top half teams will be too burnt out in the finals to win so any team that had an easier time in bottom half will take it.

Both Croatia and Spain had pretty lackluster performance in their groups IMO. So unless they were hiding their BOs for the playoffs they should be easy to take for France even on a French worse day. C'mon.

Well it's still a difficult match and semis should be even worse. I would rather face England than Spain though.

Yes, semis should be difficult :D Yes, bracket luck is a thing, but that's the way it is. The true champ should defeat everyone so who cares who's silver anyway It's not like Spain's playing Protoss and thus has an advantage

It's not just about determining the champion. But also the top placements. Every team deserves recognition for its performance.

By your logic, might as well randomised all knockout matches without seedings. Or put all the higher seed teams (group winners and best 2nd place finishers) in the same bracket. Since all that matters is determining the champion, doesn't matter who finishes as runner-up, semi-finalists, and so on.

My logic is that there's plenty of seeding already encountered. This system is fine by my standards and yes, some teams will get lucky(Cze, Greece), some teams will get unlucky. That's how it is.

Edit> I mean Cze 96 and Greece 2004 where we can talk about Cze being unlucky considering the form and the lineup

That's true, but it's no fun watching a Spain-Sweden final or semi-final where one team is playing to score goals and the other just parking the bus for 120 minutes. Having high quality games has a commercial spin too. Why else do people come up with the European Super League (bad idea as it was)?

Just watched back some of the previous matches. Scotland really played their hearts out - feel bad for them. Good performances from Denmark, Switzerland, Poland and Hungary. Results can be deceiving. And there's some huge element of bad luck from injuries and COVID (Eriksen, Gilmour, Busquets, etc)

I agree that watching a Spain-Sweden final would be pretty meh, but that's what I don't get about complaints about the brackets being 'bad' in this championship -- a Spain-Sweden final would require Sweden to beat the winner of England/Germany first, then what will likely be Netherlands or maaaybe Wales/Denmark in the semis... if they get that far, that's not the problem of bad brackets, that's the problem of other, higher rated teams playing like shit.

Exactly... Sweden is never gonna make it to the finals. I felt they looked rather shaky and even their win against Poland was somehwat lucky. I felt a winner for Poland there was more likely than the 3-2 (dang, actually thought it was 3-1 lol, had a few beers too many last night I guess and couldn't really remember Poland scored the 2-2, Sweden looked pretty shit though imo and I felt Poland deserved to win there). But yea, great that Sweden made it out, but they have no business battling for the tourney win. They will run out of luck at some point. Same goes for Spain at the other side of the bracket, although they've been playing some good football (with the finishing lacking).

I read somewhere yesterday that we are W 3 - D 3 - L 5 against Czech Rep. We were relieved when we heard we didn't have to play Portugal, but it's slowly sinking in that it's by no means an easy opponent.

Today UEFA has decided that the Away goal rule will be gone in all their tournaments (mainly CL, EL whatever that new useless league is named)

There won't be a replacement tiebreaker, so those games will go to extra time + pens.

This is mainly due to the growing number of complaints about the 2nd game away advantage a lot of top teams were not happy with...

I'm skeptical, but oh well. The rationale for the away goal rule is sound imo - it incentivizes the away team to play attacking football and not just park the bus. Still, I don't have any data, and I don't know if this actually has any truth to it.

I mean, removing the rule should create more frequent extra time and more frequent penalty shootout, which is always fun, so I'm happy about that. This, in turn, should mean that having the home advantage for the final game should be an advantage..

Data and pretty much all the big clubs also confirmed it, that so far the 2nd game away was a large advantage, because you always had this moment, where suddenly a goal kinda counted "twice", especially in extra time. (effectively you had 120 minutes to score those valuable away goal, the opponent had only 90 minutes)
Many suggested to actually only remove the rule for the extra time, but keep it in place for regulation. But looks like this was too messy for the UEFA.

Yes, the rule is really unfair against the home team in extra time of game 2. Then again, if you scrap the rule in extra time, there would be unfairness against the away team playing extra 30 minutes of the game away with no benefit of the away goals rule (there's no extra minutes when they were playing at home in game 1). So the asymmetry can't be resolved equally - just different advantages and disadvantages. Kinda like Armageddon mode in chess (black wins by winning and drawing, but white has more time).

I meant that I don't have data for whether the away team will play more defensive football or not if we scrap the away rule.

According to google we haven't played against each other for 6 years, so it's not much telling And our current team isn't exactly good at defending nor good at attacking. So if you, unlike England, score goals from your chances, you're fine.

You don't have to fear the reverse sweep like 2004 Euro

From what I understand/recycling of football writer Jonathan Wilson’s opinions over time the rule has vaguely cancelled out the intended consequence by virtue that teams playing the home leg first are more concerned with avoiding conceding the away goal than necessarily scoring themselves.

What the away goal rule does enable, and we’ve seen it in recent years are absolutely improbable comebacks being possible by virtue of it, which is entertaining although, not necessarily fair. Be it Liverpool v Barca or Barca v PSG or whatever.

I’m not sure it really tilts the scales either way or is basically a neutral thing vs not having it, one thing I 100% agree with Wilson on is away goals counting specially in extra time is really distorting though.

UEFA should protect the players in case the Hungarian fans(in this case) get wild. OTOH UEFA should stop any politic gestures on the pitch. And after some of the statements I read this is such gesture. At the same time UEFA is currently in a corner considering their recent standings.

I don't get why people need to bring politics into the sport. Can I have something WITHOUT the damn politics agenda?!

Also if he's in a such big need of helping people I have a pretty solid nonpolitical suggestion
