Holy shit Yuki. Alpha Tauri looks ridiculously fast. They got a bunch of Red Bull staff for this year because of the cost cuts and last year Horner said that Alpha Tauri would become more of a sister team than a junior team. That certainly looks like the case from what we've seen of them. edit: Otmar Szafnauer just confirmed Vettel hit two yellow flags because of Mazepin but also Carlos Sainz, who had his engine briefly cut out and had to slow down. double edit: and there go the sandbags from Mercedes. | ||

Ferrari looking fast. Maybe third or fourth fastest. Them, Alpha Tauri, and McLaren are going to be close. edit: Red Bull saying that Verstappen had about 0.1s worth of floor damage on his car also. So he did all that without a car at 100%. Factoring that in and he'd be up almost half a second on Mercedes and that much or more on Perez. | ||

Overall, this could be the closest season since the beginning of the turbo hybrid era. There are also lots of great team pairings and interesting drivers on the grid right now. We've got some legends (HAM, VET, ALO, RAI), some really great established drivers (VER - I know he's still young, but..., PER, RIC, SAI, BOT), amazing younger drivers (LEC, GAS, NOR, RUS), solid midfielders (GIO, STR, OCO), some great rookies (MSC, TSU). Latifi is also there. And there's an idiot in the other Haas. Wasted grid spot. Give me Shwartzman or Illott, please. | ||

That being said, the spin was supposedly BBW issue, and after watching it, I think it was just him braking on the kerb. From his onboard, it should be a rear left lockup, which causes the left side to overtake the right. Going frame by frame there's basically no wheel movement up until he yanks it due to the rear stepping out, and he's lost it well before the turnin mark(~50m). Hamilton and Max both avoid the kerb on their quali laps. If there was time to be found by braking there, they would've done it. | ||

edit: Mercedes appear to be eating tires in a way Red Bull aren't. Both cars are wearing through hards faster than Verstappen is wearing through mediums. And there goes Bottas' race. Pit problems. Norris into P3. | ||
