Meanwhile, right after the crash in the beginning, protesters took to the track to block it

If I told you before the race that Sainz was going to pass Leclerc for the win, followed by Leclerc, Perez and Hamilton was fighting for second place, while Verstappen was busy fighting Mick for 8th, I think you'd be calling me an absolute lunatic

So while Max was having an issue, Ferrari decided to give Sainz the win and left Charles with only 6 points gain from the race. While Charles was the fastest driver with damaged wing.

Fighting for the championship, am I right

Ferrari fucked this up royally, there's no way around it. Still, very happy for Carlos

Ferrari strategy masterclass. Snatching another defeat from the jaws of victory.

But do you really want to deny your other driver his 1st win after all the fuck ups in the race?

We see this time and time again. Teams put track position as higher importance than literally anything else, and refuses to take any action that could see them losing said position, even if that obviously makes them better off in the long rung. Like Mercedes leaving Hamilton out on inters while literally everyone else pitted last season, refusing to make use of VDC to pit for better tires in the WDC deciding last race, or McLaren not pitting Lando for wets when literally everyone behind him did, making him not only lose P1, but out of the points completely

Ferrari just looked at the timing sheets and went "Well, we can't pit him! He'll lose position!"
It annoys me to no end how common this trap is. You can never rest just because you have the position, you need to fight for it all the way to the flag

Indeed. Of the top 3 only Red bull seems to be able to resist that urge

That was a great race and I'm happy for Carlos to get his first win. Would have been interesting even without the SC if Lewis would have won, it actually hurt his race again.
Bit surprised Perez got away with overtaking LeClerc like that but the RBs were both feisty.

Fun race. I'm glad Zhou's okay and I hope everything's fine with Albon. Congrats to Sainz. I was skeptical he would be able to pull it off but with a bit of luck he did. As usual, when a Ferrari driver ignores Ferrari strategy and tactical calls, things go much better for them. Trying to back up the cars behind like Ferrari wanted Sainz to do seemed like it would either have ended badly for Sainz or have accomplished nothing so I don't know why they'd bother proposing it. Leclerc was way slower on the older hard tires and I don't think any amount of defending would have saved him from losing places. Their decision not to pit Leclerc is quite odd to say the least.

I was really worried for Mick at the end because Verstappen was defending way harder than I think anyone would have expected him to.

I was wondering what was going on with Ricciardo but apparently his DRS broke which messed up his race and forced to do an extra stop. Rotten luck for him. I was confused because he was in the points but suddenly lost a whole pile of pace then dropped to the back of the field and ended up on a weird set of tires.

What a crazy race! Now, that's what I call pod-racing!

Yes, I don't get this strategy. I'm a casual fan with little technical knowledge. To me, keeping track position just seems like a conservative mindset (hoping your opponent doesn't screw up pit stop and cant race hard enough to catch up). When you're in the lead, you should take charge of destiny in your own hands (switch to whatever tires that will let your drive harder and extend your lead long-term). Staying on merely to protect a lead just seems like running scared.

Red Bull seems to have this fortune-favours-the-brave approach which is exciting and also driving their success. That's why for all the talk about rules, luck, conspiracy and what not, I thought Max and team deserved the championship last year.

P.S. The only circuit which you may want to be more careful and prioritise track position is where overtaking is difficult like Monaco.

When you're 1 & 2 it's not unusual to 'split strategies' in these scenarios to make sure that one of your 2 cars stays in the lead, which is exactly what happened.

Of course it ended up being their WDC contender who got shafted, which is a bit awkward. Their explanation is that Carlos had older tyres so it made most sense to call him in.

In hindsight it's easy for us to say they should've both pitted, Ferrari's concern was that they both went in to pit, and the next ~4 cars stayed out so they went back on track in p5/p6. (I don't remember the exact lead they had and what track position they would come back on if no one else pitted so these numbers are made up.)
People will argue p5/p6 would not be an issue to get back to the front, but you never know if another safety car appears during the restart etc etc.

Another issue was that both cars were close to each other on track and it would not have been possible to pit both in the same lap. Recall Monaco where they tried a double lmao, didn't go so smoothly.

Ferrari played it safe and Leclerc got screwed over.
