today was the hottest day in the uk in 40 years or something like that *tx facebook* so here's probably the smallest ROM AND lightest weight deadlift you've ever seen but i think you can see at least i have some sort of confidence doing it compared to the shitshow i posted the last 5 years. i think usually i have better form/go a bit lower and not that sway, and much more leg-centric, but will see in the future. i mean it was so hot i was barely getting out 5 reps at 90kg or whatever the fuck that is and then collapsing with my head against the wall or lying on the floor in between lul. jus posting coz i can

A new study that seems to poke a hole into the rhetoric about how "99% of diets" fail.

After a 2-y intensive CR intervention, ∼50% of CR-induced weight loss was maintained 2 y later, which was probably the result of lasting effects on acquired behaviors and dietary restraint.

I'm being a bit pedantic, but to my mind 99% of diets fail always read as, "I couldn't stick to the south beach diet, or the zone, or w/e for amount of time XYZ"

Compare that to, I changing your over all diet as a matter of habit.

diets were conventionally regarded , if memory serves, as being like 2-week or month crash courses to get your weight down by x amount, with no regard to what happens after the fact

Write a book, make millions. On the ice cream note, for a cheat that halo top ice cream is pretty good and you get some decent volume of ice cream for the calories.

Hey, for self-described "hard-gainers" I still recommend the ice cream diet. Cakes are another matter, and are imo total poison/sabotage/good-for-nothing. Context is everything. For a scrawny 19 year old looking to add mass diet will be different in comparison to a late-20s, early-30s person who now has to contend with a properly "adult" metabolism, joints/ligaments/tendons that have been abused for decades, and providing for themselves under modern "working conditions."

Halo Top is the only ice cream I eat now (early 30s), when I eat anything with added sugar at all.

Halo Top and I have an Italian Market near my place that does homemade gelato that is amazing. I'm 28, so in a similar boat. I also don't really seek ice cream, which I can't say for my wife.

so i got blown out of any kind of sports cause of beeing lazy and inguinal hernia surgery(? had to google the eng term) stopped all sports and now 18 months later ended up having to get surgery for a herniated disc. its getting better now and i really really need to get back in shape.

im in phys therapy but they dont have a clue about anything outside of very very basic exercises. what is the next step after i feel ready? i still have my eq so barbells/dumbells rack/bench and resistance bands all at home.

any recommendatios or maybe someone had to start from surgery from zero also?

So since you are recovering from a hernia, you really need to take it easy on movements that require a lot of stop-and-go exertion. Unfortunately, nearly all good weight lifting maneuvers revolve around precisely that kind of exertion, so I'd start with resistance bands/very light weight and really work on RoM, movement pathing, and technique. Additionally, once the surgical opening has healed properly, I can't recommend swimming enough. Particularly relative to hernias and other problems that are easily exacerbated by doing too much exercise that requires that "pushing" feeling, swimming laps, aquatic plyometric drills, and similar exercises can really speed up the strengthening process you need to go through before starting back at serious lifting.

yoga, like running, is something that out of shape people think is a good "easy" way to get into shape. unfortunately for people who already have compromised movement patterns following years of disuse and abuse, both pose considerable risk for those who practice them without understanding and knowledge of form. yoga, in particular, is risky for neophytes unused to proper core engagement and spine movement

i second farva's swimming recommendation. i used it extensively in the last nine months after hip impingement surgery

I will third this opinion. How do you feel about Airdyne? Swimming, while healthy, is really hard to learn and accesing a pool is sometimes not possible.

its not really hard to run per say, if your goal is to lose weight. Out of shape people just need to take it easy to not hurt themselves

Started lifting in my MMA gym, but the bar is total trash. Anyone have any good recommendations for bars? I've used Rogue's specialized bars before (Deadlift and Ohio Power), but never just the standard Ohio or Rogue bar.
