the FOX Sports interview with Jon Jones is now on youtube.com

i wonder how skilled of a liar Jon Jones is.
and i wonder if FOX showed him the questions before the interview.

it looks to me like there is an edit or cut at 6:00.
and it appears there are other cuts in the interview.

but, he looks pretty honest overall.
this is a pretty good piece of damage control.

I'll bet Rory MacDonald is behind this.

Can't be, he's not as popular in Canada as GSP.

the UFC might not be that great, but i think they realize Montreal doesn't have a majority of native english speakers unlike some of our posters in this thread.

Now, here is a guy with mad promo/pr skills: Conor Mcgregor.

Mcgregor v. Siver blew away the viewer #s of any of previous FS1 fight.

2.75 million average viewers.
the previous record was set by Sonnen v. Rua and drew 1.78 million average viewers.

i'm no math whiz but 2.75 >> 1.78 well played Mr. Mcgregor.

i think the fact that Mcgregor is a featherweight makes this accomplishment all the more astounding. the larger the size of the fighter the easier it is to promote them. heavyweights are always the easiest to promote and always the easiest to make into really famous guys.

Ahh, the real question, imo, is how much of that is attributed to McGregor and not 1) An insane marketing push & 2) setting it up perfectly to piggy back NFL playoff football. No doubt that McGOAT has turned himself into a legit star, but given how the UFC set this card up I kind of think that it would have pulled big numbers regardless of who was headlining (edit: and I don't mean THAT high, obviously so of it IS McGregor, I'm just curious as to how much).

edit:

So, I just started to think about something - how much does the perception of a fighter impact the judges scorecard? I remember hearing Joe Rogan (or someone, not sure) say it was bullshit that it feels like a fighter throwing his hands up after a close round and acting like he won it, has an impact on how judges score it. This got me to thinking,(recent example, not discussing the fight specifically) if a guy like Benson Henderson isn't landing take downs and working his grappling, and instead just striking with someone like Cowboy do the judges give credit to Cowboy for "shutting down" what Benson is "known" for? I mean, even Cowboy before that fight was pretty damn confident it was going to be a wrasslin' match *spit*...but it wasn't. At all. So, do you think the judges have this sort of...bias when it comes to scoring fights? That if Fighter A isn't working the game plan they are "suppose" to work its because Fighter B isn't making it possible? (And this isn't the case for all fights, but a lot of close fights with bad judging)

Another example could be Sanchez/Pearson. From what I remember Pearson allowed Sanchez to just stalk him while picking him clean in exchanges and making him bleed, but he fought the fight that Sanchez is known for and allowed the judges to think that sanchez was imposing his will or something. I dunno, that one was real poopy.

good points. and even if you don't look at how a fighter acts outside the fight (fighter throwing hands up after fight), the scoring system is subjective and there's no way around it. if you have rounds, and the fight ends without a ko, tko, or sub, then you're leaving it up to them to decide. how do 3 "significant" strikes compare to 1 "very significant" strike that clearly rocked the guy? what's a takedown worth if nothing happens because of the takedown? if a fighter is constantly backing up because that's just the way he fights and he's good at counter punching, is that good for aggression and octagon control?

another interesting thing is judging based on damage. some people think that the fighter that did more damage should win. so if fighter A landed less significant strikes etc than fighter B, but fighter B is all cut up and bruised while fighter A looks fine, then A should be declared the winner. some other people would argue that this isn't right because the win should be given to the guy who had the better technique and skill, and that if he looked like he took more damage, then it might only be because he bruises or cuts more easily. and then the first camp would argue that being more prone to bruises is a physical trait, just like strength and speed, so it's part of how a fighter should be evaluated anyway. and so on...

speaking of the points system, i'm wondering if you guys would rather watch fights that have no time limit (only finishes or forfeits), like how some of the old japanese bouts were done. i know this isn't feasible for the UFC, but is this something you guys prefer? the fights would certainly play out a lot differently - probably a lot more defensive fighting, guys holding on to each other on the ground trying to tire the other guy out..

Yeah, it certainly isn't something that is measurable and in the end, I think, it comes down to uneducated judges/bad scoring system. If those were fixed an idea like I posted above would be lessened substantially.

@above - All fights 5 rounds :D

When fighters celebrated after the bout went the distance, I never figured it'd matter to much to the judges. My thoughts were always right after a round ends, the judges look down to their scorecard and write down their scores, without bothering to know how each fighters reacted after the bout went the distance.

At the same time, yeah, I can't help but think every fight will have subjective judging regardless of whether or not the judges have experience in training MMA themselves or knowing of who the fighters are.

As for which kind of bout system I'd prefer, I don't mind the one that's in place right now, with 3 5-minute rounds and the occasional 5 5-minute rounds. I tried watching boxing some days back (it was Pacquiao vs Bradley), which I believe are 12 3-minute rounds and though the bout itself was entertaining, I felt like it was really long, even as a viewer, to go through 36 minutes of action like that. Maybe I'm just used to the UFC format, I didn't watch/follow MMA during Pride nor am I particularly fond of their rules either.

judge's dont even know what a 10-8 round is. Making it even more complicated would be worse with that scoring system. They also don't give out enough 10-10's.

Agreed. It all comes down to how well the judges know MMA. The sport does need more 10-8 rounds, and more 10-10 rounds, but to pull that off it needs judges who know what the hell they're doing. The athletic commissions, one of them, need a person to step up and really push for changes in how MMA is judged, ref'd and all around regulated.

Boxing has also had judging problems for decades. In fact, any sport with judging has always had problems with the judges.

Judging can be improved upon , but it'll always be an issue. Even after some good improvements get made you will always get the occasional really bad decision.
