^ a little obvious imo but good explanation by him. Which is why Klay's extension to me was not that big of a deal to begin with (if it ends up overpay then it's only by a few million). Having a player 24-29 is the best thing in the NBA. You get them at their best time. Contract length and stuff like this might change soon so it was/is a good time for teams to act on this.
Which brings me to WHY I waaaanted the Lakers to sign I. Thomas and L. Stephenson this offseason!! They were bargain contracts for players in their prime. Stephenson even has a 2nd year team-option ffs. Thomas even wanted to play for the Lakers...ugh.

off-topic: Looking up from my comp. to TV and seeing that Randle had gone down was probably my lowest moment as a Lakers fan. The only player/thing this season that really had some still-unfounded, possibly game-changing upside. The main representation of hope on the team. And went down on the first game...

The Lakers are better than any other team at randomly becoming contenders again. Not this year IMO, but I can imagine them with a top 3 pick this year, Randle, and pick up a max free agent in the summer (Rondo perhaps), then they'll trot out Kobe + Top3 pick + Randle + Max player + Good bench (Lin, Young, Ed Davis, etc) .. that's a playoff team probably, then they get another max the following summer + further developed Randle/Top3 pick + older Kobe ... that's a championship contender.

Not outside the realm of impossibility

the next time they trade some corpses for anthony davis, yea, lakers will 'unexpectedly' rise again. there's nothing magical about the lakers in itself. you are kind of relying on unlikely good trades to happen.

all this without claiming anything inappropriate to competition went down.

I don't consider that a good bench and we don't know what Randle will become. He's a young and raw, this is a pretty terrible setback.
