Yeah, go France ! :D

By the way, Josep Maria Bartomeu has been reelected by the socios as the president of FC Barcelona. He gathered 55% of the votes vs 33% for the former president Joan Laporta.

so i gotta ask, and maybe this is really obvious. but why does cuba keep sending sport teams to international competitions when they know that like half the team will just defect?

Ugh, sucks. Was hoping Laporta would come back.

im watching club america vs man utd and his showing is literally the worst ive seen from any new signing since ive started watching united.
embarrassingly poor

Maybe these are only his succesful ball contacts but it doesn't seem all that bad as you make it seem?

yeah those were pretty much all the "successful" touches
id be interested to see his stats for the game. he would definitely be on the lower end of the scale for avg speed, distance run and pass completion
ive never seen someone so afraid to come into contact with anyone on their debut for man utd. on top of that when rooney is yelling at him to press and pointing out where to be, memphis is just walking around hoping his team gets the ball back for him. pathetic display of heart for your first game

Haven't seen the match, but based on the summary I saw and on this video, it seems he was playing as a shadow striker? Depay always played left winger, so perhaps he was a bit lost as well. Don't think he has any injuries or anything.

yeah he was playing behind the striker
i figured that may have an impact on his performance but it doesnt explain his lack of work ethic

Here in german media, I've read several articles over the last weeks, stating that U-XX-competitions tend to get dominated by players born early in the course of a year, since at younger ages, being a few months older makes a big difference physically. Go check out some squads of recent youth world/euro championships, and you will see that most teams consist of >75% of players being born in the first half of the year (the deadline defining date is always the 1st january). According to these articles, most "new xyz"s that fail to live up to the promise are born early in the year.

Of course, I dont much about this player, but it was just the first thing that came to my mind to check his day of birth, and well, it fits the pattern.

Beach soccer is fun to watch. Lots of acrobatics, beautiful goals, constant action and length of the games is perfect. There also seems to be more and more heterogeneity in the talent in different NTs. Lots of fun seeing a strong Tahiti squad - I had assumed they'd be rich retired football players from Europe, living in Tahiti but they were actual Polynesians - and teams from four different continents in the QFs.

The book Outliers defines how pro athletes end up being those born in the first couple months of the school year in most sports. Instead of 1/6th its like 1/3rd born in the first two months. You just start ahead and get more opportunities because you are the best due to that big development lead (6 months at 4 years is huge, and that's when my kids started playing).

If you haven't read that book I would suggest it. It gets into programming, athletes, students, musicians, and so forth and analyzes why the best have been the best. Its a great read.
