That Ashley Cole thing is hilarious.

edit: MU looked quite good. I can't really say any of their players look sluggish or bad today, aside from Cleverly. He had some bad giveaways and heavy touches. Kagawa looked real good for the short time he was on. Mata was great. Going to be a fun season.

What's going on with Benfica guys? Didn't they collect like +80 millions from sold players? Where are the replacements?

This year Benfica Sold:
- Markovic (25M€) - we only had 50%
- Oblak (16M€)
- Rodrigo (30M€ + some more depending on performance)
- André Gomes (15M€)
- Garay (6M€) - no one knows what happened here, benfica only had 50% of his pass
- We just sold Cardozo to Trabzonspor for almost 6M€

On top of this we sold some players that never got A Team play time:
- Alan Kardec (4.5M€)
- Derlis Gonzalez (5M€)

We also loaned out Djuricic to Mainz for 0,6M€ plus is salary with a buy out clause of 15M€ at the end of the year.

This is just rumours in the portuguese media but we'll probably also sell Enzo Perez to Valencia for 25M€ and Gaitan do Monaco for a fee around 30M€. With that we'll completely destroy a winning team and we'll for sure go through a desert of no glory for years to come.

We got like 15 new players this season that altogether cost 19M€ or so. The rest is just for the club to stay alive... Benfica debt is astonishing.

It will be a fun year....

80 million from sold players and 40-50 million goes into the pockets of investment companies.

That's only half true. The only players that we have or had in the past in deals with investment companies are Markovic (went to liverpool for 25M), Ramires (went to chelsea for 23M) and Ola John that will be in Benfica indefinitely because he lacks the will to be a better player.

But for sure that a big chunk of that value will go to someone elses pocket other than the club.

We will only know some of it when we get the Annual Report and Consolidated accounts in the end of the year.

Plus Rodrigo and André Gomes were sold in January to balance things in JANUARY. Freaking Portuguese media insists on putting them as "this year's transfers" instead of including only proper summer sales just like they do for every other club.

That money was already burned down from Jan to now so it is not new money entering right now. If you take those 45M away, the amount is much more accurate and will help people understand a little bit better the room the club has for new investments (in simplified terms of course).

anyway Sporting was also overspending the fun part is that Sporting got worst placement ever (6th) in the League while overspending with a retard president... now we got an awesome president that is balancing things (getting team back to 2nd place while doing so) we still have massive dept but thats why we are not spending much.. and all that the media can say is that we buy unknown guys and all of them suck.. while Benfica buys guys like Talisca and they are treated like best players ever lol and Porto just buying Spanish players everyone thinking they will win the championship me included but then saw them playing and wasn't impressed.

Louis van Gaal agrees, but the finance and marketing department of the clubs strongly support this tour. 109,000 fans at Minneapolis and I don’t know whether this was true I assumed the tickets would be quite cheap to fill the stadium but the commentator of the match on the English stream said the cheapest tickets where about £80.
Either way the clubs are fighting to sell merchandise and make new fans in the pretty large American market.

Its great for United fans that Louis van Gaal is been hard on the players and making sure everyone’s in shape and working their hardest. I go the impression with Moyes that he was slightly too much of a nice guy and didn’t work the players hard enough, but that’s complete conjecture from me I have no evidence.

Its only the final I think is unnecessary, both teams have to extend their tour by a few days. I read that the finalists gets 2m quid though, so I guess the accountants doesn´t share my lack of enthusiasm!

The story of Porto, Sporting and Benfica in recent years is very interlinked with that of the Portuguese banks.

Once upon a time Portugal's big banks were BPI, BES, BCP. Life was nice - they had good access to political power since they financed the political parties and gave jobs for retiring politicians, they had interests in most large portuguese companies and construction was going strong, with huge contracts from the government giving them tidy profits at little risk.

Our politicians' appetite for concrete was insatiable and today we have 50 highways - in a country whose geography is LITERALLY A STRAIGHT LINE - an abandoned airport in the lovely town of Beja, pristine public transportation in the major cities and we were set to build a new airport and high speed rail between Lisbon and Porto - two cities already connected by 2 highways, a relative high-speed pendolino and multiple daily flights.

Because life was so good, these banks somehow thought it would be sensible to lend money to eternally-loss-making enterprises in the glamorous football business. I really struggle to understand why, but I guess in the short term these clubs are paying out very high interest rates on their loans and most of their revenue is more or less guaranteed (fans will be fans). The big three quickly amassed a tidy 1.2 BILLION EUROS in debt altogether. Someone pointed out this was a higher figure than the debt of all Bundesliga clubs.

Then the crash came and with banks highly dependent on mortgages that people were not able to pay anymore, they incurred huge losses. BPI was saved by Angolan and Spanish money, BCP crashed to the ground and today we are finding out that BES was also a house of cards.

So the three clubs, who have been very competitive in Europe in the past decade and a half, now owe a bajillion moneys to banks that are probably no longer interested in financing them. Sporting was the first to hit the fan last year, and has undergone a restructuring of its debt before the BES collapse, so they have some oxygen and may be competitive this year. Porto is managing to stay alive by selling a big-name every year (Falcao, Hulk, James, Mangala). Benfica was caught in a situation where they had around 60 million to pay back to BES from a rolling loan the bank was no longer interested in financing and this was the perfect time to gut the team and sell assets.

Sunday express claims Brendan Rodgers set to make a move on former Man City striker Mario Balotelli. Super Mario could make an Anfield switch for just £14 mill this off season. http://news.ladbrokes.com/en-gb/football/premier-league/liverpool-man-city-striker-7th-summer-signing_206028.html

According to spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo, Rodgers also is looking to sign the 31 year old RB of Barcelona, Dani Alvez. Alvez has supposedly been told hes not in the plans of new Barca manager Luis Enrique.

Can also report that Javier Manquillo is ready for his medical at Merseyside.

Thanks for kind replies Portugese fellows. The situation seems really fucked up out there. It's about time to find new Cristiano Ronaldo in youth academies to make things more cashy. Fortunately, things change quickly. I still remember that around 2001, Dortmund was one step from bankrupcy and look where they're now.

Also, I don't understand why anyone on Earth would want Balotelli now. That guy is just trouble.

Yes. Although Casillas never was a good goalkeper in air play or foot play, He had the best reflexes in the world. Their reflexes were so astonishing that he made awesome and gamechanging saves all the time. He was the best of the world a lot of years.

But now, He is out of form and his reflexes are not so good, He is mentally insecure now too. He is a very unsafe goalkeeper right now. Diego Lopez was a much equilibrate keeper and I understand why Ancelotti used him in la liga.

Last year keepers.

And ask to any Real Madrid fan that have watched Casillas this ~20 years. They will say you that Casillas never was so great in air play. There were a lot of better top goalkeepers in that regard. He was awesome in reflexes and with saves.
