Too much hate on bodybuilding. That's pretty much all I do nowadays, and I'm still pretty strong. Everyone should be switching out of that tedious starting strength template as soon as they can.
The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

Even the Chinese weightlifters do some upper body bodybuilding. Partly as a break but also to strengthen some of the smaller muscles that aren't used as much in the olympic movements.

I don't think anyone would say a bodybuilder is weak, unless your standard for strong is top level power athletes.

Agreed 100%. BB training is super fun as well. 24 hours before the final selection for heavyweight, pretty nervous >.<

Bodybuilding also just safer once you start approaching advanced level weights like 350/500/600lbs for the longterm.

Pretty much every weightlifter does some degree of "bodybuilding" or non specific sport strength as a form of pre-hab and GPP
how reasonable is it to eat off wood instead of your tummy?

Yeah I hate that low volume template aswell, was poking fun on decaf. BB assistance has a place on the training on any powerlifting, oly lifting and *gasp* crossfit athlete.

I do hate the "texas method" where you go from low volume to lower volume.

That said, if I didn't squat/bench/deadlift regularly I might aswell skip the gym

Keep your overall calories restricted since you're cutting, but if you find yourself running out of energy halfway through a workout you're probably not eating enough carbs.

If you're not eating enough carbs, your protein intake is just going to get converted to carbohydrates through gluconeogenesis - especially if you've got a big energy demand being regularly placed on your muscles, so eating too few carbs is definitely counter productive.

Well, I've been training at this new gym for a solid two weeks or so now. The owner has me doing more bro-stuff, since he is sponsored by Optimum Nutrition and is basically a bodybuilder (he writes for bodybuilding.com and is friends with a lot of famous bodybuilders like Kai Greene), but I'm actually kind of enjoying what I'm doing, at least more than Starting Strength. Today I'm pretty sure I did box squats, hack squats (basically a machine that simulates high bar squatting), RDL, leg extensions, and leg curls with some mobility/foam rolling as a warm up.

It was hard to get back into lifting and I puked for the first time ever during training after a few sets of prowler sprints, but my work capacity has gone up tremendously and I am enjoying the additional isolation work.

LOL. I gym today too after 2 weeks none and still feel like puking after a nap. All I done was tricep abs

U will know wen ur not getting enuff carbs coz u will want to kill someone. Buy 12x apples pears bananas and ull be fine so long as u go to them instead of the takeaway

I'd be highly cautious with accepting the advice of someone who writes for bb.com; as a veteran of that site, I can say with total certainty that I've never once read a useful or insightful article on bb.com lol. They are shameless marketers above all else, so keep that in mind.

Yeah, I'm trying out the gym. I actually thought about PMing you if you know the guy, and I might do it anyway just to see if you actually do know him. He seems to have some idea what he's doing (he has a M.S. in Anatomy and Kinesiology and isn't having me do dumbass shit like squatting on a bosu ball), but he is having me do more BB type stuff.

He might very well be the exception to the rule, and one can hope that the site has improved since I became less active there. I've been on a bb with a touch of powerlifting program for 4 years or so, save for some deloading/boxing breaks, and I've found that it jives the best with my lifting profile, so he may not be leading you astray.

Hit 2 plates for the first time today on squat. Last time I tried was 7-8 months ago before I left on my backpacking trip and lost a lot of weight. Couldn't even do 1 rep, but it was somewhat close.

Today I went for a 1RM and got it without straining myself too much. Felt good so I went for 2 more and got them both. I think I could have gotten a 4th if I really pushed, but it was at the start of my workout so I didn't want to strain myself too much for the rest.

Max squat at the beginning of the year was around 1.5 plates. At 2 now which was my year goal, might try a bit higher next week.
Max DL at the beginning of the year was 2 plates. Was able to get 2 and a 25 last time (8 months ago) which was my year goal, gonna go for 300lbs this week.
Max bench was and still is terrible. Was basically a plate and a 5 at the beginning of the year, wanted 1 plate and a 25 before the end of the year but sitting at 1 plate and 20 right now... gotta push it this month.

So 2/3 year goals so far

tl;dr fuck yeah but my bench is still terribad. Really happy with squats today though.
