On the other hand, I often see Ronaldo wasting good opportunities. Yes, he can take over games but he can also give away games when he acts too selfish. I have seen too many shots of him going into the clouds or too many shots/dribblings that should have been passes to better positioned teammates.

Don't know about top 3 because it's not something I thought about, but the single player that impressed me the most over the course of the whole year is Philipp Lahm. And it's not because of the first half of the season including the treble, he just did what he always did during those months(being the best, most consistent full-back).

Oh yes, absolutely. It makes no fucking sense whatsoever.
Lahm is an amazing player but he's getting overrated when you're putting him above the likes of Messi and Ronaldo... These guys are scoring 60 goals a season and giving assists, numbers might not mean everything but when you score that many they mean a lot. It means you have the ability to score in every situation and decide games by yourself.

I see your point but to my mind the idea of the ballon d'or should really centre around the question:
"If you put this guy on your team what would the impact be to your squad?"
I think it's going to be very hard for a full back to therefore win this award. It's hard to get into the territory of being a terrific supporter and role player. Lahm is right up there as a player and a useful part to any team. He is also vital for building a team ethos I think; a determined, level-headed team player.
But I think if you are talking about the Ronaldos, Platinis, Zidanes, CR7s and Messis of the world you are going to be hard pressed to throw in a player like Lahm.
I think Lahm is the only one with a legit claim other than Ronaldo though. He's been the best player who plays in a position not really comparable with ronaldo's position. Attacking players will necessarily be compared with and fall desperately short of Ronaldo's performance.

You just cannot argue like that. Imagine the PERFECT defensive player (just theoretically). According to your logic this player would still be overrated, because hey, 60 goals for these other folks, who play on completely different positions.

I dare say Messi has more goals per minute and more assists, with less games played. Also less goals from penalties.
No source tho, would love to see one myself.
Edit: ^ Oh Stats posted just as I wrote this :D Edit2: Turns out Ronaldo has a slightly better ratio of goals per minute. Same number of assists as Messi with +1200 minutes on the pitch over him.
i hope this opens the eyes to all the "60 GOALS RONALDO" sayers.
You can clearly see that Ribery for example has a whole other task on the pitch. It is not his main goal to score. He has other duties and he does them excellently.
He leads in terms of total passes, pass completion, total crosses, cross completion and chances created. Also it can be concluded, that he does more and better defensive work (tackles made/tackles won). Additionally, he played less minutes than Ronaldo overall.
Ronaldo is better in other fields of the game and statistics are not everything of course. I just wanted to point out, that some players have different roles to play than others (that also concerns the Lahm-debate).
OK. Can anyone actually say they'd prefer Ribery in their team over Ronaldo? Let's say a bunch of weird footballing aliens invade and you had to choose the best 11 humans and there's only one winger spot left because the UN demanded you fill other positions in accordance to their ethnic quotas. Does any sensible teamliquider prefer to have Ribery in his team?
Also, what are Chances created? How do you have a guy with 160 shots ON TARGET and 94 chances created and another one with 149 chances created and 56 shots on target? How does this work?

Of course not. Ribery is there as a representative for Bayern.

First of all: he is not only a full-back anymore, which is why I said that it's mostly because of the second half.
And I exactly picked Lahm because of what you wrote in quotation marks. Lahm makes every team in the world better, no exception.
You don't win leagues and especially not CL/EC/WC because some dude scored goals number 2-5 against some shitty team. Looks nice on paper but nothing more. Stability, intelligence, tactical excellence, versatility/adaptility, consistency are the most important parts of any team that wins something right now. Individual skill is the sugar on top. Aren't you a Chelsea fan? You should know !
Bayern had lots of problems in the second half of 2013, things didn't go nearly as well as the results might suggest. They got the results because they had this amazing little guy playing 3 different positions close to perfection, bringing the attributes I mentioned above to the team. It went so far that Löw thought about putting him in Germany's midfield aswell - it's insane to even think about it considering that we have only 1 good full-back, and that is Lahm. And we don't have to talk about Lahm's quality as right-back, he had games where he was basically the playmaker of Bayern on that position.
He embodied football on the highest level like no other player in 2013 in my opinion and therefore is my personal favourite. I totally understand why people disagree tho.
Midfielder - Andres Iniesta Midfielder - Xavi Midfielder - Frank Ribery
Forward - Ronaldo Forward - Ibrahimovic Forward - Messi
That completes the 2013 FIFA World XI These questions are hilarious haha
Ruud Gullit asks Ronaldo Messi and Ibra "Who would be top scorer if you all played together" - Ronaldo "...." Ibra "Ronaldo" --- Messi "We would be all equal"
Hahaha
Oh wow they gave an award to the Olympic chairman, the man with the most boring voice EU xD
WTF Random Adriana Lima is on the stage xD
Kinda sad when you see how big Ronaldo is now....damn man xD
i think that Ballon dOr is just a way to sell more nike or adidas products to fan kids. i dont care much about it. imo Messi or Ronaldo are the only ones that it should be awarded to. ok Ribery won all the titles, so why does he need a Ballon dOr then? cause hes still a little fankid
