Can't go from bottom of the barrel to second round playoffs in a year, it'd be pretty hard to do with a team like Detroit.
Signing big players also means that people may want to come to the team to play - Drummond/Monroe/Smith/Jennings those are some pretty big names to have on the same team. I'm hoping we get into playoffs this year, do a bit of work in next offseason, and see what happens next season.
Still, you can't deny that you feel A LOT more optimistic about this team compared to the start of last year.

Come on, this is delusional. There's one big name there.
They signed one big player and a below average starting PG. Moose is like the third best player on a good playoff team. I feel optimistic because of Drummond and Smith. Knight is worse, but he's not a commitment.
This team will get to the playoffs and stay at the 7 or 8, because they signed another player to a medium length 8m contract. They'll be kicking themselves by year 2 and 3.
What? Those are all big names for a shitty team like Detroit, compare that to the fucking Raptors.
I guess this is where we agree to disagree because and we can pick this discussion up a few weeks into the actual season where we can compare literal gameplay.
They're not big names. Everything about Drummond is based on his potential. He's probably not even a 30+ min/game player next year. Monroe is a good offensive player and bad defensive player. Jennings is a bad offensive player and horrible defensive player.
Every team has players like Monroe and Jennings. Hell, Utah just let 2 Monroe's walk.

It's almost like your GM is in the last year of his contract and desperately needs results to justify an extension...

Yeah, but I think they could've made the 8th seed in the terrible East, even with Knight at PG.
Siva's probably the only part of this I like, and that's a pretty big stretch.
Maybe the goal is to allow Drummond to grab 15 offensive rebounds per game, and score 26 ppg on putbacks.
Yeah. They might be relatively big names for Detroit but it's not going to convince anyone to come there.
You know players that convince other players to play for that city? Dwyane Wade. Lebron James. CP3. James Harden.
Not Drummond, not even JSmoove.
I think my biggest problem with the signing is that you overpaid a player at the deepest position in the league. Even if Jennings is an improvement he's not that much of an improvement. You can get other, just as good PGs for cheaper. Hell I might take Nate Robinson over Jennings and he got paid what, the minimum?
And I heard Monroe is looking for something close to the max and is willing to leave Detroit to get it. Not that I think he'll get the max but he's going to get some form of big money (look how much average centers like Splitter and Javale got paid). even if he does stay in Detroit he's going to eat up a lot of that cap space you were hoping to use for "offseason work".

Monroe actually grades out as a positive on defense. Not as good as elite wings and solid bigs but he isn't terrible. (based on xRAPM anyway)
It's basically a harmless move. Jennings is still very very young, just hit restricted free agency. He's a better defender then say...Tony Parker or whatever. He plays a crap load of minutes and is pretty baller. He's basically a young player with really ugly slash lines but about average production. So, yeah, slight overpay but you get the potential.

I've seen little of Detroit, and thus Monroe, but I hear nothing but bad things about his defense from those who do. Zach Lowe claimed to have watched a lot of the Pistons' defensive possessions when he did his article on the team, and described Monroe as a pretty terrible defender. I've also read that many think that Monroe does his best work as a C, and is exposed as a PF on defense because of his lack of athleticism and mobility. All in all, it sounds like the Pistons would be better off playing Smoove at PF and moving Monroe for help on the perimeter.
Instead of trying to dissuade Jennings from chucking, I say encourage it. With that front court they'll be getting most of the rebounds in good position for easy putbacks.
Zach Lowe is pretty good but he bases a lot of his stuff on points per 100/ and basic plus-minus which results in retarded conclusions. Monroe isn't THAT bad on defense (like a Harden or Melo level). I could look for his RAPM numbers or Synergy Stats and I doubt it's that bad. I think he is a low impact defender which is different than bad.

I think it's an okay gamble for a team like the Pistons. Jennings definitely has potential, and could do some damage if he gets his head right and cleans up his game. At least he has talent, and now he has a guy like Chauncey to help him take advantage of it. Better to gamble on his talent being realized, than playing it safe. It's not like Detroit was going to do any serious damage this season anyway.

The article didn't read like he was basing his opinion heavily on numbers, and more on watching actual possessions. Add in the consistently poor opinions regarding his defense from other sources and I think it's safe to assume that he's at least a weak link on that end of the floor. He's still relatively young though, so there's always hope that he can improve. Plus, the other parts of his game are strong enough that he should be able to get away with being just an average or slightly above-average on defense.
