Next, what we need is The Leafs need to find a 20 year old goalie and "develop him" at the NHL level then get Nonis to stare straight into the camera and say "we're developing our young goaltenders" It's content riddled more than anything else. Kadri isn't awful and deserves a fair chance. Randy is looking for balanced scoring in the lineup because he doesn't have the proper personnel for a shutdown line. I have no problem with Reimer and Scrivens either. Before the concussion Reimer was pretty solid and I'm sure he'll be able to find some level of consistency. He does need work on that glove side though. Show nested quote +On January 19 2013 15:50 Taku wrote:On January 19 2013 13:25 GolemMadness wrote: Edler signs six years for $30 million. Good stuff. That's not much of a discount man considering the injury he's coming off from and he'll never truly be the same player. 1/3 of their cap is in their D and for five years. It's a bit of a stretch. Edler would have gotten 6mil per year easy on the market.

Man, Canucks got manhandled. 4th line looked preeeeetty nice though.

Starting off a season with a Pens win when wins mean more than ever. To top it off, it was against the Flyers. So happy :D

2+2 for both the old farts Selänne and Jagr on first game of the season, damn.

You'll be lucky enough to get another 3 good years out of him. With that said the Leafs just extended Lupul's contract to another 5 years after this at 5.25mil. He had a good year last year, but at 5.25? It's going to be hard to keep a lot of our young guys. >_<

Erickson and Quincey are 3rd pairing defense men playing 5-10 minutes too much and it shows when people walk through them. Howard is serviceable but he isnt one of those "I am ready to face 40 shots a game every game" guys. Franzen is too slow, Samuelson is even slower (I literally have no idea why they resigned him except as some kind of meta-game to get Lidstrom back). Kronwall is not a pass moving dman no matter how hard Holland wills it, Erickson will never use his gigantic size and Ian White does what he can but he is smaller than Datsyuk.
Oh well. It was a nice run they had from 96-2009. After that they faked it well enough for another two years. Maybe they back into the playoffs this year before getting smoked 4-1 again. I guess what troubles me is that Holland really doesnt seem to have much of a plan in place. Always cobbling together teams with projects and castoffs. But I guess after 14-15 years of being a top 3 team its hard to stack up draft picks. In effect the way they drafted was a lot of luck. People love to rave about the Wings scouting but you can't hit so good in the draft the way they did without some luck. Howard I wouldn't worry about. He isn't one to carry a shit defense consistently but he put up good numbers with the Wings horrible D last year. They need a couple of quality D men badly and for the forwards to commit to what they were doing defensively back when they won their last SC and went to the finals the year after. I know they missed out on Suter but I wonder if any good D men are FA this year? Or maybe Holland will sacrifice some of that forward talent prospects they have in a trade (would rather not this as Z and D aren't getting any younger) It was lucky to draft Lidstrom, Datsyuk and Zetterberg with picks as low as they did. But I also get the feeling their scouting department got away with not working as hard anymore because the last 5 years the Wings have consistently left talent on the draft board with their 1st/2nd round picks. Which just points to a front office that has done a good job of running a team they more or less finished building in 1998 but kept adding little pieces here and there [although adding Rafalski was huge and probably was the reason they had that great run in 08 and 09]. You just said that you'd be impressed if Gillis signed him for under 5.5 million...

I guess I am. Both of your names start with an S, though. You're basically the same person.

Good game between Edmonton and Vancouver. Fun game to watch.

2-0 Wild Parise gets a goal

Rough day slightly salvaged by the Hawks spoiling another banner raising and looking way better as a team then they did at the end of last season

Awesome game between the Oilers and Canucks. Man, Eberle's backhand is sick good.

nhl talk:
The Rangers got seriously clowned by the Penguins last night. I'm sure they're still getitng their legs under them, but damn yo.
What do people think of the Lupul deal?? I think that's way too long for a guy who is hardly ever healthy and had his first good year in a while. Way too much risk.

Poor Vancouver
Lupul's deal is basically what I wanted Zajac to get actually. I think, assuming Kessel re-signs too (otherwise.. LOL), it'll probably work out alright, because I can't see Lupul being anywhere near productive enough without him. I suppose he's earned his raise in $, but I was under the impression he was still more of a stopgap/trade deadline fodder than anything else.
Also, quite pleased I used my last fantasy pick on Vanek so far haha.

Zajac, outside of that injury and his one shitty year, has been pretty consistent and is useful all over the ice. He's just not a genuine offensive stud. It was overpayment, but not a huge amount, and he's still an important part of a team that lost in the SCF last year.
Lupul is injured more often than not, had a good year for the first time in ages, and is a cog on an awful team that doesn't seem to be getting better any time soon. They'd probably be better off moving him for kids or something and doing a full rebuild. I just don't see why one good year justifies a five year extension. You couldn't let the season play out a few weeks to see if he keeps it up?? (this goes for Zajac too)
|
The Lupul deal is a typical Maple Leafs signing. 1 good statistical year, nothing really in the minors to get excited about and no trade bait to start a real rebuilding. This is just like the McCabe or the Finger signing. But hey, what else can they do to keep Kessel around? The Zajac signing is in a similar vein too. Sure he is a good secondary player but that much money for maybe 50 pts?

But this is Toronto, where optimism > facts, and I really don't see Nonis blowing the team up. I'd love to see MacKinnon in blue and white though.
edit:

Sure he is a good secondary player but that much money for maybe 50 pts? Without Zajac the Devils would be royally screwed though. It's a good case of a player being worth more to the team he's with than as a player in general. He's the only one who can win faceoffs regularly, plays well with Kovy and is good defensively. I don't have a problem overpaying a bit for him, NJ still has tons of cap room.
and Jesus Christ, Tarasenko just scored another beauty goal.
