The real problem is that as in most Canadian institutions you have an old guard that is way past its prime and only a string of funerals will move forward the state of broadcasting. Personally, I think TSN has a much better coverage team. While certainly far from perfect, they win out by virtue of how shitty the competition is - there is no one employed at TSN who even remotely approaches the asinine idiocy of guys like Glenn Healy, PJ Stock and Don Cherry. CBC has one good announcer in Jim Hughson, two decent interviewers in Scott Oak (who is hilarious) and Kelly Hrudey, and one decent analyst in Elliot Friedman. All of whom would likely join CTV/TSN if hockey moves there entirely. The thing is, I love the CBC. I just cannot stand hearing guys like Healy/Stock/Cherry talk about hockey. It ruins the experience. Just my opinion.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/leafs-beat/mirtle-leafs-central-weakness-exposed-by-bruins/article11675693/ No team in recent memory has had as good a record as the Leafs did this season when being out shot by an average five or more a game. More advanced shot differential numbers, like Corsi or Fenwick – which incorporate missed shots and/or blocked shots – are even more highly predictive of teams’ future success or failure, and the Leafs have posted some of the worst numbers of any club in that department in the past five or six years. And time for... The funny thing about shot differentials in hockey is that traditionally they haven’t been considered a key statistic, with many around the game using anecdotal evidence and recalling games where teams are outshot but found a way to win. But in the NHL over the past decade, having a positive shot differential in a season has correlated pretty strongly with winning, to the point that it’s a better relationship to being a good or bad team than having a strong or weak power play, penalty kill or team save percentage. Time to bring up some outliers or small-sample anecdotal garbage to explain how the Leafs are number one best team ever.

When talking about a game, they always talk about some intangible bullshit like "Player X has to dig deep" or "Team Y is working hard out there." There's almost never any real discussion about strategy, tactics, or anything tangible. If I didn't know better, I'd conclude that coaching hockey basically boils down to an exercise in motivational speaking. The best is when they key in on a player to show how awesome of a night he is having based on like one shift where he did one thing like block a pass with his face. And then it turns out this "beauty player" is an absolute anchor when on the ice and is killing his team's overall performance. But hey, one play, saw it good, so whatever. Like Don Cherry did when talking about Ryan Johnson - statistically the worst puck-possession player in the league for several seasons.

Yeah, the Wings have a good tandem, too. However, there are a lot of really boring and stale local announcers, too. The biggest obstacle to me getting into the Avs (despite living out here and despite the team sucking) is that their TV announcers just suck. Totally vanilla and uninteresting.

I hate the MLB playoffs for that reason. I love the Tigers casters then in the playoffs we get to hear boring Joe Buck every game... I guess that's what the mute button and a radio are for though.

To be fair there are only a handful of really good guys in the business. ;/ Have to deal with what you get.

Oh well, go sens go! 1-0 so far in the series :D It is absolutely brutal to listen too. His anti-Ottawa bias is so bad... Pretty bad game by Ottawa overall, Andy was the only reason we stuck in it. Hopefully our play improves next game and maybe, by some miracle, our PP finally figures out what the fuck it's doing.

"Can the Penguins win their first-round playoff series against the Islanders without Sidney Crosby?" Also, the Blues look really good so far to me.
