oh yea and vinny went to philly for 4.5M(5 years), i think they overpaid by 500k but its not that big of a deal.
Vinny's deal isn't that bad in terms of cap hit, but the length could come back to bite them when he's 37~38 and isn't putting up numbers.

And the cap situation is do-able for the Flyers. Unlike a certain other team from Pennsylvania... They have $49M locked up in 8 players for 2014-2015.

Flyers like assembling old guys I guess.

you'd think Vinny would want to sign with a playoff team, flyers don't even have a goalie signed an they are $318k over next years cap according to capgeek.

EIGHT YEAR 58 MILLION contract for Letang. You'd think he was Lidstrom or something, considering how much faith Pittsburgh is putting in him... they're getting pretty top heavy, especially since Malkin didn't exactly give them a discount on his extension. They'd better hope their inexpensive role players can keep stepping up, or else their years of dominance may be unfortunately short.

pittsburgh just gave dupuis a 4 year $15mil deal today too.. they should have let him go an try an build defense b/c that's what has cost them the past two years

Is Pronger going to retire/get bought out? Are they going to move one of their 4+ million dollar AHLers to a team desperate for any semblance of defense (hi edmonton!)? Why is Hartnel the highest paid forward? What is their plan for all those RFAs they might actually want to resign -- Geroux, Coutirier, Scenn?? Philly makes the Flames look like a well run organization with a well though out cap strategy and long term goals.

Pronger will be put on LTIR to mitigate his cap hit, but yeah the rest is pretty funny

As perhaps the resident Flyers fan here, I can assure you all that PHI is in perfectly fine shape, and comparing them to the Flames is insulting. They'll be fine for the cap this season because after game 1, you can put injured players on LTIR which takes away their cap hit. That means Pronger's 4.9M cap hit goes away. The issue is making it to game one, where you have to be cap-compliant. Currently they have 9 defensemen on the big club. If they can move Meszaros they save $4M. Also, a number of their players on defense and forward have slide-eligible contracts, meaning they can go between the NHL and AHL without trouble. This means that they might put B. Schenn in the AHL for the first game, or do that with some of the defense. This gives the Flyers room to sign a goalie as well, with a budget of about $3-3.5M.
@Sub40APM - If the cap goes up to the 2011-2012 number they are fine. And considering that he cap is directly tied to revenue, I don't see any reason that wouldn't be the case. So if the cap goes up ~$6M, and Timonen's $6M cap hit comes off the books, that means they have an extra 12M. Giroux will probably get a 4M raise, Couturier a 2.5M raise(use Giroux's contract as a reference), and Schenn a 1M (he makes 3M now). That's $7.5M. Read might be gone if they want to sign a better-known goalie. Otherwise, the cap situation is fine. And if need be, trading Lecavalier isn't exactly going to be difficult.
- The Flames have been treading mediocrity ever since 2003-2004. They consistently overvalue 2nd-line players and veteran defensemen. They make terrible trades. They have drafted poorly. The comparison between the two teams is extremely unfair. Jay Feaster is a complete moron, where Holmgren is sort of an idiot savant at times, and a short-sighted but good talent evaluator the rest of the time.
Also, @kyuu - Who is there to sign for defense? The Flyers don't have a bad set of players per se, but rather they played poor together last year, and there were a good share of injuries. It's not that the Flyers need more 2nd and 3rd pairing guys, they need a true No. 1. Unfortunately his career is over due to concussions and we're still paying him! They tried to get Weber last year, and NSH matched. This year, they picked up the best FA defenseman already in Streit, and the best forward in Lecavalier. It's been suggested we go after Matt Hunwick, who can be had cheaply. I'd be down for that, and it can fit in the cap. Sure we lack maneuverability, but that's the way it always is in the Flyerland.

vinny cap hit is totally fine, however, that term is awful even if philly wasnt in cap hell. plus, the last fucking thing that team need was more offense. shero and holmgreen arent exactly identifying their needs this offseason. philly has alll these needs and is blowing very limited cap space on shit it doesnt need at bad prices. theyre gonna waste giroux's prime years with this bullshit. bryz wasnt great but he is 10x the goalie mason is, and theyve not addressed anything about their awful awful defense. also, if you put schenn in the a to start the season i am like 99% sure he has to pass through waivers to come back up, which absolutely will not happen. hes not a stud but hes certainly an nhl body
looking forward to the yotes being i nthe same ownership shithole in five years. how fucking dumb.

I heard the Coyotes were moving to Calgary so that Calgary could finally have an NHL team.

Schenn's entry level contract is two-way. That means he can be brought up and down a finite number of times, and I believe he still has some of those movements left. And they have addressed the defense in some way, bringing in Streit. What else could they possibly do to upgrade the Dmen? As I said before, it's not like they lack 2nd and 3rd pairing guys, what they need is a number one. They have one who is chronicly injured (Pronger), and tried damn hard to get one last year. Number One defensemen are the hardest things to get via trade in this league. Everyone here (and elsewhere) keeps saying "upgrade the defense!" but there isn't really a functional alternative.
As to blowing cap space, you have to understand that the Flyers are all-in every single year. Holmgren believes unused cap space is a waste. Even if Schenn isn't the one who can be shifted, there are other eligible players to do that, i.e. Laughton, McGinn, and Akeson.

the best way for the flyers to deal with pronger is to talk pronger into retirement, he's never going to play again, an that would be the best way to get that contract off the books. sad though b/c pronger was a beast before that concussion.
|
i thought schenn was on a one way for some reason. however, i completely idsagree with addressing the defense. philly is horrible in their own end. streit is an old, offensive defensemen, and they signed him to a retarded deal. it does not address the problem of keeping the puck out of their net. also, everyone not named timmonen and mezaros are somewhere between meh and horrible, and both those dudes are useful but past their prime
while there isnt exactly a ton of good ufa dmen out there, at this point those guys are question marks. it's a fact philly d is awful at this point. and theyre more or less standing put on it rather than trading any number of forwards they have for a top two pairing guy
holmgreen has been really really brutal these past couple of years. i have no idea how he still has a job. him and gillis both need to be canned by next year if they dont have massive turnarounds.

Pronger signed that contract when he was over 35, so even if he retires it stays against their cap. LTIR is the only way they can deal with it.

Hey guys, still hating on the contract Gillis managed to sign Edler to?

Exactly. If he retires, then the cap hit stays no matter what. And you can't buy out an injured player. The only option for Pronger and the Flyers is to stay unretired and wait til the contract is over. I do wish the league would make some sort of exception for him, but that's unlikely.
