I honestly never heard of that guy until these playoffs same here! he was kind of nothing spectacular when he played in Russia but seems that he had a couple of very strong seasons in AHL before he was pulled to Kings last year. Also last year you wouldn't even see him that much, but today - BAM! guy is productive as hell!

This kind of stuff happens in Edmonton. The Oilers represent the front-page in a 365-day news cycle. You can't say stuff like that. Man, I feel for guys like Horcoff and Hemsky. Horcoff has been a whipping boy ever since he said 'yes' to an outrageous contract passed his way. The fans vilify the player but not those who made the offer. And they ignore the Sarlacc Pit that the Oilers stepped into last season when Horcoff got injured. It's all fine and dandy to want to improve the center position, but don't talk about distancing from a player who is not repeated in any way, shape or form elsewhere on the roster. He deserves better than that. Hemsky is confusing too. People talk about him like he's all washed up but he's 30 years old. And he's still a very talented and dangerous hockey player. But this is Edmonton and Edmonton has some of the most brain-dead, group-think fans on the planet. They called him soft since he entered the league and now complain that he's injured all of the time - a direct result of his not being soft. And his contract is good. With his declining numbers, it's likely he can be signed at an even better rate. He has taken less in the past to stay in Edmonton and now the Oilers have up and thrown all of the good will out the window. Who wouldn't enjoy a player like Hemsky on, say, their third line. A team that has him on the third is a damned fine team. I need a new sport.

Hemsky has been mentioned in trades every day for the last 6 years because he is a good player on a good contract that can bring back some kind of value. So that's nothing new. But for it to come from the GM... I can kind of see what's going on here. It's rebuild version 21.103. If Hemsky can be traded for help defensively, it does make the team better. But I still don't see how Horcoff can be traded for anything that can be considered an upgrade. Unless someone with a similar contract is demanding a trade elsewhere.

The team just had an 18 year old win the rookie scoring race. So what's in the news? You guessed it - talks about trading him! Seriously, it reminds me of that conversation about monetizing Facebook from The Social Network: "We don't even know what the thing is yet..." They have no idea what kind of player Yakupov will be. What they do know is that he just took the rookie scoring title as an 18 year old on a shitty team playing a lot of 3rd-line minutes. He might be the most talented young player on their roster. Fucking assholes.

and yeah I figured Hemsky probably only moves if it is for a bonifide defensemen. Horcoff isn't worth squat. and yeah that is a very Oiler reaction to Yak hahah

Sure in a way it sets up a dominant position for a few teams that are immovable from the top but at least the really dumb teams get punished. Which is what should happen to the Oilers and the Flames. I don't know that they are so dumb. It seems like you could almost make a profit by investing fuck all in your team and pocketing all the money you get from league revenue sharing and TV contracts. The league should get rid of owners of these perpetually shit teams. I can understand when teams tank for a few years to rebuild, and to acquire young talent through drafts and let the retarded contracts they made run out. But it makes the sport look bad as a whole when you have owners that actively make their teams uncompetitive like the Oilers, Marlins, and Browns and the league doesn't do shit about it. At least in soccer if the owner(s) run the team into the ground they will accrue massive debt and have mobs of angry fans calling for their head on a platter : /

Also there are clubs in soccer that can absolutely print money even if they had mediocre or even shitty teams. ManU, Juve, Barcelona, etc etc there are a bunch

In the 80s and early 90s it was a legit top team, and now its trash. And all because its owners ran it into the ground. And its been demoted down two leagues for it. Right now you get a terrible douchebag owner and he just destroys his club. Look at the Oilers. Look at Chicago before the current owner.
