Will probably take me a couple of weeks to recover from my random sicknesses and get back to where I was a month ago... Haha dude, I was in Africa over x-mas/new years. Got so fucking sick that I had to fly home earlier (high fever, pounding headache, diarreah etc). Had gotten sunburnt the day before I flew home... and on the flight it all turned into blisters. All over my shoulders/back and thighs. Walked through the airport with shorts rolled up so they wouldn't touch my blisters and it looked so SUPER gay, got stared at massively :D I also woke up on the plane home with a weird pain in my foot. Rolled down my sock to reveal a gigantically swollen foot covered in a purple blotch. Guess something bit me as a goodbye present - couldn't walk for two days when I got home. Africa sure did a number on me as well :p I'd like to see Africa but there's a reason why i really wouldnt travel there, all the diseases and stuff going on + the body not being used to the food and the climate :s It's a beautiful place and I don't regret going, even though it set me back quite a few kilos and lots of progress in the end. I myself was an on overland truck from Tanzania->Victoria Falls and while we ate african foods on the trip, we were fed mainly western shit like cornflakes and white bread with peanut butter. The latter did much more to cripple my immune system than anything else I think. I took probiotics but it didn't seem to help versus the inevitable travel stomach-> diarreah :/ On the plus side we butchered a pig, skinned and gutted it, then spitfire roasted it for dinner one day. It was primally delicious :D If you guys ever come to South Africa let me know and I'd be happy to give you a tour. It's got most of the advantages of Africa without many of the dangers

Haha I've heard too many stories from my rugby buddy that was an EMT down there to believe that!

Ironically, I was supposed to go on a garden & addo route trip in SA as the second leg of my journey, but I was too sick and flew home instead. South Africa was gonna be my highlight. I wanted to ride an ostrich damnit! In all seriousness, I'll probably come back to SA within a year - whereabouts are you located?

Lately I've been getting hip flexor pain from high bar squats. I started using oly shoes and I'm going pretty deep. I think I need to descend a bit differently now wearing those shoes since the heels are elevated, I think I need to lean a bit more forward now. Anything else to be aware of?
Also I started doing some stretches, namely "the best hamstring stretch ever", "hip flexion plus external rotation" and some ordinary calf stretching. On the same note, I'm also doing shoulder dislocations to improve my press, is my arm supposed to maintain a perfectly vertical line with the back at the lock out from a pressing movement (when you look at it from the side)? If I try to bring up my arm without any weight there's a minor angle in there, basically like this (red line):

I like squat/power, I would rather just stick with that.

Crime is damn high compared to Europe and the US, but that's just because those places are super safe. I've never been mugged or robbed in my life and neither has any of my friends. HIV is insanely high but it's pretty much restricted to the poorer parts of SA. The only person I know with HIV is our gardener. Other than those two, I don't think there are any real problems for tourists :p

I live in Pretoria (which is right next to Johannesburg). It's reasonably central and close to things like the Kruger National Park, but SA is a big country so it's still quite far away from many places (for example, 1500km to Cape Town). My family has a small holiday home in the Drakensberg though so if you let me know early enough I can probably organise a trip there

Todays Workout
Squat 5x5 43 kg
Bench 3x5 63.5kg || 2x4 61kg || 1x8 52kg
Chin Up 3x5 4.5kg
Overall I felt pretty good today except for my squat. I decided to take it easy since I was very sore and I immediately regretted that. I should have just skipped it all together My legs feel like they're broken now.
BUT on the other hand my chin ups felt great. I pushed those out quite easily so I'm looking forward to next Tuesday when I'll throw on another 2.5kg

Weight: 175 lbs (same as yesterday)

I know this will come off as insulting or rude or whatever, but how come you're struggling wtih 43kg squats? Is there a medical problem?

43kg is a lot to squat if you are not perfect with it. The technic is actually pretty hard and I would say 90% of people do squat wrong. Better for him to do 30kg squats and learn technic of it, or even 40+ kg will damage his knee.(meniscus) =.= And for an untrained person, what do you expect him to squat? Bodyweigth? Not gonna happen with good squats.

But now that you have found this place, there is hope.
On topic, there is obviously nothing wrong with starting low on squats and work your way up. Learning right form that way is definitely the best thing to do.

Why exactly do you die a little inside?

When I did squat progression (from 20kg, using stronglifts @60kg BW) I didn't miss a set until 80kg. I'm just wondering why he's faltered so soon.

Let it hereby be known that I passed judgement too soon onto our beloved german brother NarutO, and therefore apologize for my misbehaviour. + Show Spoiler +That is in regard to training, still disagree on nutrition

I'm not struggling with the weight, it's just that my hip flexors(?) were super sore these last couple of days so I dropped the weight rather than skipping the squat all together. I haven't hit a wall yet in terms of weight for my squats, just the soreness that I am not used to is what's holding me back. Makes life a bitch when it hurts to walk and I need to walk across campus after every class ^^

Anyways, I'll be hitting 60kg squats tomorrow as I'm feeling great today
