Not a big fan of the imperialistic system) tall and has unusually long legs (not very proportionate to his torso), so I don't know how much his knees should be sliding forward in a high bar squat. Anyone knows what to do with tall and disproportionate people in coaching the squat? knees sliding forwards isnt bad (it actually cant be avoided for tall people with long legs) as long as he keeps the weight on his heels and tracks the knees over his foot (no caving in!). stretches will help with the "buttwink" though, so its a good idea to do those.

This is pretty much exactly what I thought, but i remember reading somewhere that knees can slide forward in moderation. His knees were sliding pretty grotesquely out in front. I had a pretty bad problem with buttwink myself, but the stretches in the olympic weightlifting thread fixed that kinda fast.

I'm 6'1 with pretty long legs and i squat highbar atg w/out problem. I wouldn't worry too much about the knees sliding forward, esp with high bar squat. Just make sure his chest is out, back is tight, and he doesnt round/go soft at the bottom. Keep working on his mobility (check out mobility WOD and other stretches) YAY gym is open today. gonna be a shitty lift but it will feel good :D managed to stay sober for the last two days (wtf??) so hopefully it won't be too bad. Of the top of my head, myself, Rosa, purecarnagge, and boubou/celltech are 191-195 cm (I'm 193) and inimine is even taller than that (198 or something?) (so is the liftbigeatbig.com guy - fucking love that blog). If we all manage squatting without blowing our knees out, I'm sure your buddy that's not even squatting bodyweight can improve fast. Personally I'm having a hell of a time getting my little sister to squat properly (she's 191 cm) but that's more about her refusal to do stretches, pay attention when I'm going over form with her, or put in any effort in general than it is about a real "block" on her lifting. As for new years resolutioners, I haven't noticed any more people than normal. Back when I did crossfit, January fucking sucked because normal class sizes of 6-8 turned into 16-18, but the giant LA Fitness I go to now seems unaffected.

Anyone knows what to do with tall and disproportionate people in coaching the squat? I'm taller than him at a solid 1.96/1.97. Zero problems with ATG high bar squats, I squat on Starting Strength so heavy 3x a week. No problems so far. No reason to let anything slide forward, although it's harder for us skyscrapers than for the strong dwarves that generally frequent weightlifting. Still the knees should not be passing the toes afaik. It's pretty easy to check; the weight should NOT be shifting forward, so the bar should remain over the middle of the foot. If it looks good and the bar stays nicely over the mid foot then there shouldn't be a problem. EDIT: Stretching to get the buttwink out is good, but the CALIFORNIASTRENGTH guy says that the buttwink is a completely natural and harmless motion somewhere on youtube.

@Shadow - Noice improvements, keep goooooing @phyre - your little sister would look down on me rofl. Though i was reasonably tall at 1.85m Decent day at the gym after 6 days off, managed to snatch 110 a couple times but i had a billion misses at 100/110. I'd pull it pretty great but couldn't fucking stick it to save my life. CJ'd up to 130 a couple times but got tired so finished up with 5 reps at 120. The bar still comes out away from me and then crashes on me a bit. fucking annoying. getting slightly better. Squatted 315 for a couple singles to finish up. Not bad for my first lift of 2012 i suppose. getting back in tomorrow.

Thank you for the helpful links. Haven't gone through them all yet. Articles motivated me to the GYM right now and get my nutrition in order. You can really notice the difference working out when you are well rested and eating well. 2012 I will get back into fighting shape ^_^ Thanks again.

It was hard, ugly, and involved enough grunting and yelling to turn some heads at the gym, but I locked that shit out. I went from a 300 max to 315 in two months on Wendler's 5/3/1 without ever deadlifting more than 275 lbs. Considering I also shoulder pressed 125 lbs yesterday (up from a max of 102 earlier in the year), I'm really happy with the 5/3/1 program so far. Just keep sticking to 531 and you'll get even better gains ^^
