I read this funny article in a swiss paper today that apparently our farmers believe that their cows will get sick if they stop feeding them corn and grains (they said that at least 10% of the cow's food should be corn/grain)? like, wtf? they did a 3 year study which showed that grass-fed cows give almost the same amount of milk and are not unhealthier... I could have told them that for free!

And your telling them for free would have included empirical evidence, rather than anecdotes? The only way to defeat bad science and anecdotes is with good science and evidence. And even that always doesn't work.

I'm sure there have already been studies on this subject! anyway that wasn't even my main point. I just dont really understand how they can think that something that cows have been eating for thousands of years would make them sick!

As it turns out, lots of studies get done that don't make sense from a purely common sense point of view, to shut up people who make arguments based on financial or political views. The main reason I personally consider those studies to be a waste of money is because people who make those arguments don't listen to anything inconvenient, like science.

Anyways, you can get studies to say just about whatever the hell you want, so there's probably (bad) ones that make the counterpoint.

What did they think cows ate before they started feeding them crappy agricultural products?

So after doing some reading I decided to start doing IF based on what I read from leangains. Since I don't like to eat in the morning but I do like working out right after I wake up. I'm following his advice and taking BCAA in the morning. Is this the right product and does anyone know of any place that would be cheaper?

http://www.amazon.com/Scivation-Xtend-Intra-Workout-Catalyst-Lemon/dp/B005CVG9T8/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1335825130&sr=1-1

At the moment I'll eat like 2 bananas and drink a glass of milk maybe 15-20 minutes before working out. Is this adequate? I usually try to eat a decent meal soon after working out.

Are you doing the fasted training protocol? Bananas and milk pre workout doesn't sound like it. If you intend on breaking the fast with bananas and milk before training, BCAAs shouldn't be necessary.
I know Martin recommended Scivation Xtend, but the product has gone under some changes since he last recommended it. It should still be fine but I'm not 100% confident. I buy BCAAs in bulk like this(but this is for australians): http://www.bulknutrients.com.au/amino-acids/flavoured-bcaas-1kg-2

At the moment I'm eating bananas and drinking milk. I plan to stop when I actually buy BCAAs. So just to clarify I'm not following fasted training protocol that he has up right now but I will once I purchase some supplements.

Can anyone comment on the changes to xtend? If they're significant anyone have any recommendations or would this still be adequate. Would it be a decent idea to find a cheap supplier for bulk BCAA powder instead? I'm pretty sure I can make do without flavored powder.

My wallet prefers in bulk and I noticed a significant flavour change with their new formula( which I don't like). Effect-wise I don't think the new Xtend should be worse than the older version. Whatever you choose its probably not worth splitting hairs over. If you intend to sticking with the fasted training protocol for a long time, I'd recommend bulk buying, but that would be solely because its cheaper.

Just to double check what are your goals with this IF / Workout combo? I have heard Robb Wolf talk at length about the problems of mixing in IF whilst trying to put on bulk/increase performance basically creating too much of a chronic stress on the body leading to a range of problems particularly in testosterone. Sure you can IF and workout but I would be keeping the workouts pretty basic and certainly be trying to focus on one goal only whilst IF. IF is great but it really only is worth the effort/time if you got everything else (sleep, stress, diet, fitness, vitamin D) under control IMO. Not to say don't experiment with it, just be careful and back off if symptoms appear.

When I strip away all the other stuff my goals are to lose fat and gain strength. If I had to choose just one I'd go with gaining strength. I don't really care about looks or losing/gaining weight. However I end up is fine as long as I get stronger.

About my life, I think I fit all the criteria for where IF would be beneficial. I sleep a good amount, 8-9 hours and eat well. I actually do schoolwork early so I'm never stressed about that stuff seeing how I have my shit under control. Diet wise I'm eating as many good meats and veggies as I can and eat fruits as snacks. I don't take any supplements but I'll probably start taking a fish oil, vitamin D and BCAA. Oh I already take a multivitamin I guess that would be a supplement. SS wise I'm increasing my weights at a consistent pace except when it comes to the bench and oh press.

Also as I stated in an earlier post IF fits my lifestyle. I hate eating in the morning but I love working out early. Because working out on an empty stomach is probably not the best idea I force myself to choke down some food and choke down a meal afterwords. Following the fasted training protocol seems like it would benefit me a lot. On a side note, anyone have any idea what's going on with me in the morning? I feel slight hunger pangs in the morning when I wake up but I detest eating before 11am. It's seriously a chore trying to make myself eat.

Last thing, can anyone comment on either of the two links I have up above?

I currently do IF and take BCAA's before and/or after my fasted training. However, I was reading: http://www.gulfcoastpersonaltrainingllc.com/why-supplementing-with-branched-chain-amino-acids-bcaa-pre-workout-will-be-detrimental-to-fasted-training/, which makes the case that BCAA's (which are very insulinogenic) actually hinder the benefits of fasting training by blunting the natural HGH response you get from fasting/training.

Leangains doesn't say too much on this that I could find from a brief search. Martin does mention that the insulin spiking of BCAA shouldn't really be a problem because fasting ramps up insulin sensitivity, but doesn't speak specifically to it working against HGH.

I'm going to try training completely fasted (without even BCAA) and then not eating for ~90 minutes afterwards to see how it goes. Would be great to save a little money on BCAA's as well.

great, and you tell me this after I bought 4 huge canisters of BCAA for my fasted training
doesnt working out completely fasted have some kind of draw backs as well?

I think all this knowledge is still so new it's hard to know what to make of it.

There is certainly a case for eating as soon as possible post-workout (increased protein synthesis), but this increase seems to persist for many hours after a workout; HGH only stays elevated for an hour or two as I understand it.

The theory is by eating right after working out you shutdown the autophagy (cell component breakdown) that exercise induces. This autophagy is thought to be critical to the health benefits of exercise.

Edit: and taking BCAA immediately pre-workout or right after does the same (insulin spike).

I am thinking about taking myself completely off caffeine to test the effects Nony is talking about here http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewpost.php?post_id=13756973

I am really unsure about the dependence topic. I don't think I am dependent on caffeine, as I often enough don't have any for a couple of days. But I definitely do feel better after a coffee in the morning. I can't really anymore tell if I am functioning less without caffeine and the daily coffee is just compensating the negative effects, or if I am actually having a positive effect from caffeine. That's why I wanted to test taking myself off caffeine.

How long do you think will it take to get off dependence, assuming I am experiencing bad effects from dependence? Do you think I need to go completely off coffee, or could I allow myself coffee just on one day of the week for example?

Currently I am drinking about a liter of coffee daily I would say. Like 3-4 cups in the morning and another 2-3 over lunch time. I usually don't have any after like 3pm.

So I started this and I am just over a week without any caffeine. Tuesday last week was the last time I had coffee (about 1l). 1l is usually what I would drink a day, during the week as well as on weekends. From Wednesday last week on I switched to zero caffeine. Observation:

Day 1 literally zero difference. This was kind of expected since I had days off in the past and didn't feel any different.
Day 2 I felt like crap. Really really bad, headaches, tiredness, etc.
Day 3 Not as bad as Day 2, but I still didn't feel well at all
Day 2 - Day 7 : Constant morning headaches. This was really interesting. I would wake up feeling great. About 9am, 1 hour after I used to have my morning coffee, headaches began. Usually the headaches stayed for most of the day, and wore off towards the evening.

Day 8 (yesterday) and today: Morning headaches seem to lessen. Especially today I only have the slightest of headaches.

In terms of concentration, alertness, etc I don't feel any difference after day 3.

Strength performance on day 2 and day 3 were terrible. Worst workouts in a long long time on both days.

My plan is to continue with the abstinence until I can't observe any change anymore in terms of headaches, concentration, performance etc. Then try to go with only having coffee on the weekend, because, well, I just love coffee way too much.

Keep it up I know when I started to notice a caffeine dependence (coffee freely available in the office everyday) I did not like it at all and cut back merely on principle. I'm guessing that's why Zatic is doing it? I know I've seen people mention studies where your mental performance after caffeine tolerance develops after caffeine intake is the same as a non-caffeine user.
