I do dread ever going to the States though. Dudes there sounds insane. Going through Europe this time was a breeze. Locally I've been pulled over once maybe twice and it was just a polite hello, ask for license and move on in 30 seconds. Maybe my White privilege is stronger lol.

HOU launch party: + Show Spoiler + Rares: not foil Scorpion God + Hour of Glory 'cause I passed the packs to someone else instead of keeping. + Show Spoiler + Hour of Promise Bontu's Last Judgement Ammit Eternal Rhonas the Indomitable Imminent Doom Glorious End Still nice outside of the R garbage since I didn't own Rhonas yet, did badly everytime there was one. But not as bad as for Liliana, the other card I'm missing from AKH, but fuck that one, got variance'd way too hard whenever there was one for it not to be my kryptonite. U was unplayable despite 3-4 excellent cards like Ominous Sphinx, as usual, and W had maybe 11 cards so jund combo again. Red had 2x Khenra Scrapper, Blur of Blades, Open Fire, Magma Spray, Manticore, Magmaroth... but no bombs and a single 2-drop, so I couldn't go RG like I'd have wanted (Prowler + Firebrand Archer are kinda light as 2-drop to play aggro). B had the rares, Torment of Venom, Banewhip Punisher and a couple flyers. Couldn't play BR removal 'cause the creature base was lacking because of B. And since my big cards were double B in their costs, I had to go BG for playables, splashing R. Had I had actual bombs, splashing woulda been easy: Oashra Cultivator, Gift of Paradise, Beneath the Sands, Manalith, Spring // Mind, Hour of Promise, and Suvivor's Settlement, come at me 5c mana base any day. Or I could have just opened one of the very best pools I've ever seen, right in front of me. Sultai with: - Scarab God - Hapatra - 2x Kefnet's Last Will (one foil) - Rhonas' Last Stand - Fetid Pools - Torment of Hailfire - I forgot the last one, but Hapatra and the land were basically his worst rares, he played all 8 he opened (2 foils). He also just put the strong/very strong cards he had (Hoopoe, Final Reward, Bitterbow Sharpshooters, etc.) and had 21 playables. Slap in manalith and amulet and go. Round 1 vs RG aggro + Show Spoiler + I don't remember much. He played a bunch of small creatures, I destroyed his board with the wrath and won afterward with my bigger creatures (Torment of Venom still efficient vs Rampaging Hippo to shrink it). Game 2 I mull and keep a land-heavy hand since I have the wrath and am on the draw, he goes t2, t3, then doesn't play stuff, since I haven't played a thing (spoiler: I only had a single goddamn creature in hand) I assume he's playing around the wrath, so I cast hit + Bone Picker t4, eot Electrify on the bird. He rebuilds a board, mine is more menacing (Tenacious Hunter, and that unco 3/2 that can grow creatures for 4R), but he plays Overcome and swings everything. I survive with my tapped flyer, one of the blockers and 1 life. I play Gilded Cerodon and swing, threatening lethal next turn if he doesn't add a blocker since I have a desert, and he slaps Hazoret's Undying Fury. Blur of Blade's amongst the cards so he wins. He said he casted it 'cause he just drew 3 lands in a row so he should get none... 'cept I had other half lands drawn and he had like 45% so he was just as likely to hit a bunch, do your math! Game 3 goes to time, and I keep a creatureless hand 'cause I have the wrath and my boarded in Chandra's Defeat. 0-0-1 Round 2 vs RW not aggro + Show Spoiler + His pool was meh, not sure how I'd have built it, he had the makings of an esper zombie build with the lord, Temmet, removal in W and B and a bunch of eternals and cards with eternalize in U. He played RW for that W mythic curse and Chaos Maw basically. Game 1 I went wider and bigger than him, but right as I had him in the ropes he played Chaos Maw + Magma Spray on my 4/4 to clear my whole board. Thanksfully I topdecked a flyer (tho a ground creature would have left us in a topdeck war for a 2nd creature). I flooded pretty hard again so I think I'd have had a decent shot. Game 2 he went slower and I think Hour of Promise + Rampaging Hippo + the Shefet Desert to give it +3/+3 closed it fast. 1-0-1 Round 3 vs GWr go-wide + Show Spoiler + I probably shouldn't have played him. He didn't win game 1 last round because he forgot some creature had trample and didn't use that +0/+3 paria-type aura, and when they moved to damage his opponent refused him, pretty vehemently and getting angry, to rollback, so he didn't insist. But he was visibly annoyed from how it came out at casual REL, and I know his opponent can be very strict and blaming/salty when that kind of stuff happens (during KLD pre-release, a spectator asked me how big the freighter was, so I said "4/3 (slight pause) oh and it becomes 5/4 when attacking", then 2 turns later my opp lets me attack, I kill a creature and he doesn't have enough blockers not to die. He played as though the freighter was a 4/3 and blamed me for giving false information and abusing him... wtf? He just didn't hear the second part, and I was talking to a spectator anyway, he could have asked for himself at any time!). Game 1 I have the wrath but play normally, but Cast Out on Defiant Greatmaw after I dumped the counters elsewhere hurts, then he kills another creature and I have to chump going to 6. So I play the wrath, and manage to rebuild better than him using my removal and the Gilded Cerodon. Game 2 goes Wretched Camel -> Rhonas -> Bone Picker (no 4-power plays), t5 I decide to cast Hour of Promise instead of pumping a creature, which would have let me punch for 10, but now with wider board and 2 Rhonas activations, attacking with 2x 4/4 trample, 3/2 flying, and 5/5 kinda ends the game. 2-0-1 I suggested to play some more since his deck didn't draw well, but we played some EDH instead waiting for the round to end. Round 4 vs sultai bombs + Show Spoiler + He dispatched the salty guy and there's only 10 of us so I'm the higher opponent. Being paired up means losing drops me hard tho. We're all 4 people who opened together at this table, so my round 3 opponent gets to play against Glorybringer with B Cartouche, then get mana screwed at 3 with Cast Out in hand, vs flood with Scorpion God, so their match ended fast. Game 1 I have theorically a great start on the draw: t3 Ammit Eternal into t4 Tenacious Hunter, so if my opponent plays a spell... he does: Doomfall. Welp. Then when I try to attack on my turn 5 it's just casual Final Reward on the Hunter. He gets a wide board, I've got Ruin Rat and Carrion Screecher so he cycles and draws and gains life with Hoopoe a couple times instead. Thankfully for me, he slams the Scarab God as soon as he draws it, so I get to swing with everything while he doesn't have 4 mana to activate it, then cast Magma Spray on it and wrath the board. It looks cool, killing 5 creatures and exiling the god. But I spend 2 very good cards for it and lose 3 creatures so we're at parity and he drew. I follow with Wretched Camel and start hitting him. So he casually drops Torment of Hailfire for X=6. I discard 2 (including a cycling desert I only held because Hour of Promise wouldn't give me zombies otherwise) and go from 15 life to 3, only to keep my camel since we're apparently in a topdeck war. He doesn't play shit so even with him complaining about too many lands I guess he's on Kefnet's Last Will but doesn't want to steal a 2/1. I'm right and he ends up taking it, so I immediatly play Banewhip Punisher to get rid of it, and discard one of the 2 lands from my last 3 draw steps. When I get him to 3 life, I play the Greatmaw to threaten lethal next turn even though I know it's unlikely he's got nothing. So he plays the other control magic on the Punisher, I expect him to use it to kill the Greatmaw so I let it happen, but he instead uses Ambuscade to kill the Greatmaw, I topdeck 2 more lands (6 lands and 2 creatures were my draws during the topdeck war... come at me with your flooding complaints! Over half lands again) and concede. Open Fire, Hour of Promise while I held the desert, or the Shefet Desert for +3/+3 would have been a win. RIP me I guess, I could have sac'd the punisher on my own creature to play around him having removal that'd let him keep it, but I'm not sure I'd have topdecked before him. Open Fire was way at the bottom. And these 2 Hoopoe activations actually won him the game for the life alone. Game 2, he plays Hapatra turn 2, then answers my t3 Ammit (again) with Ruin Rat. Looks good to me, I kill the rat with Banewhip Punisher, get it for 4 and get a 5/5 back. Here I could have played the B desert t1 and have B untapped atm, but I played it this turn instead. So my opponent goes t4 Lethal Sting on Hapatra, getting a snake and killing the Punisher. He then swings with Hapatra, getting a 2nd snake off the counter on Ammit. At this point it's 2-for-2, since I have to suicide the Ammit into a snake before it gets shrinked to death. But I have Open Fire, Torment of Venom in hand, and something else. So I will have to trade the 2nd snake for a full card, and probably another for Hapatra. TL;DR I got the best, or 2nd best if you count what I did game 1, opener possible for my deck tempo-wise, and his pool just fucking casually 5-for-3'd me. And he crushed it just as casually last game too. The game's over at that point anyway, he gets a new 2nd snake before I kill Hapatra, and when I get a blocker, Gilded Cerodon, he just steals it so I'm even more dead 'cause I'm again one mana short from playing 2 cards, and he's obviously got a desert too. Hard not to be salty when I just get crushed by rares upon rares upon rares and perfect mana (he's got all 3 colours turn 3 both games, tho it was using the Settlement game 2) and synergy that destroys the best things my pool can mount up. I didn't even fucking play game 2 after not having B untapped turn 4, despite having one of my best openers possible. Fucking geez. I end up 4th since the 3-1s are ahead of me (including the aggressive guy from earlier). 2-1-1 Ammi Eternal turn 3 is supposedly backbreaking, or just Ammit Eternal on an empty board later on. Here's what happened to mine: - Electrify eot - Doomfall next turn - Pouncing Cheetah + Fling to exactly kill it eot - When it had a counter, another spell followed by Magma Spray to its face. So I'm just gonna assume it's a lot worse than it looks aside from dumb starts, till I play against it and it's the t3 Ammit on the play and I don't have a thing to handle it and lose there and then, 'cause that's how it works. Bontu's Last Reckoning played better than I thought, but I've been spoilt by being able to kill stuff and chain it with Bone Picker twice on turn 4 (Bone Picker got removed eot once and I was sad that time). Sand Strangler isn't as bonkers as it looks because of the amount of X/4s in the format. It's still pretty dang good when it kills something obviously but you'll often have to settle for a bear or use it as sorcery-speed removal post-combat on something that blocked.

Oh, also the bomb-laden guy played against Liliana. In his own words, "he plays Liliana, plus, mills a big creature. Next turn minus, then the turn after plus again, mills the green mythic. Untap, topdeck the missing black mana, play Scarab god. Liliana couldn't minus 'cause I'd exile the target in response, and I'd target whatever good creature he mills after the plus. She became useless and I won." Granted Liliana doesn't work against him, he was already the guy whose P1P1 Never // Return killed my P1P1 Liliana right after I dropped her turn 5 on the play. ![]()

This is the old "dies to removal" argument all over again. A 3-drop is not asking a lot to be good. When the best reasonable answers are only tempo-neutral and most are tempo-inefficient, that's a very good 3-drop.

If pixel art and cute animal people beating the crap out of people don't turn you off then I'd suggest you also take a look at Rivals of Aether (which is already out). It has a lot in common with smash but plays super smooth, and the character movesets are designed really well I think. It also has good single player modes for a fighting game, is pretty fun in your casual smash-esque 4 person FFAs, and the online community is small but really nice.
