Yeah I'm thinking that is the prudent option. I wonder if I need a permit or signs or something. Not sure what the local law is.

I've been playing a lot of Hearts of Iron 4, and I have to say, the completely automated systems in this game feel awful. I conquered Turkey as Japan, and all the oil+aluminum I was getting from the Caucaus region suddenly starts flowing through the Black Sea instead of over land (and I had built a lot of infrastructure in Siberia so my troops don't take a million years to get to Europe), and since I'm at war will all the Allies there's 0 way for me to control the Mediterranean given the AI is awful and Germany/Italy are getting destroyed, so now I'm 140 oil and 30 aluminum poorer.

Everything being so abstracted results in weird situations like this. Now I'm going to get pummeled by the American navy because I can't build naval bombers or ships fast enough. >_> They oversimplified! Paradox plz.

MTG POST INC:

+ Show Spoiler +
Went to likely the only draft I'll get to do for some number of months now. Only managed to scrounge up 6 people but hey, better than nothing.

P1P1 was Exquisite Archangel. I debated back and forth on this a little because if you're really far behind this thing isn't all that likely to save you anyway, but I took it, 'cause hey, mythic. I was a little wary to be in W going forward since I horribly lost two MTGO drafts so far going W with either R or B so I was looking to try to be in G. Things were looking good as I was passed Prey Upon and Greenwheel Liberator, but then, 2x Spire Patrols, Hinterland Drakes out the wazoo, Dawnfeather Eagle....UW fliers it was. Since it was only 6 people I wheeled basically anything I could ever want the entire draft, INCLUDING ANOTHER ANGEL, passed by the guy right next to me in WG. No idea what he was thinking but whateva.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/angelsdec-1/

The only relevant sideboard cards were Negate and Metallic Rebuke.

Match 1 v UB artifacts

This guy picked up every U bomb in the world. Completely cleared my board one turn with Baral's expertise on 3/4 of my creatures, free-casting the -2/-2 scry 1 to kill a Spire Patrol. Replayed my hand with relative ease though and beat him down with fliers both games.
Highlights - Topdeck wars---He pulls the 2/3 copy-an-artifact creature to use on my Treasure Keeper then realizes token gets exiled and not killed, so instead he Control Magics it (I forget the name of that rare. from Kaladesh. Oh yeah Confiscation Coup). Things are looking grim for me after his topdeck but then I grab Consulate Crackdown to wipe his board of anything useful (including my own creature) and wreck him.
Learning is Important - Drop a Copter early one game and right after I crew it for the first time he Fatal Pushes it. Next game I drew Copter and Consulate Skygate so I dropped them both, then Countless gears Renegade with a sideboarded Metallic Rebuke in hand. Crewed up the Copter, as predicted he had Fatal Push again which I countered for a single U mana (and improvise). Felt good.

Match 2 v RG aggro

Dude was splashing B for Scrapheap Scrounger. G1 was intense as hell, I was lower than him, sitting on a bunch of fliers while he sat on a bunch of huge creatures. I needed one more turn to swing in and kill him but I had to survive one attack. I swung in to prepare his life for the next turn but I kept back one creature too few because I forgot he had the 3/3 that can give other creatures haste with energy. I would have had to chump to survive but then when he attacked, he also had the 2/3 uncommon that lets you rummage and he picked up Welding Sparks, clearing away a blocker for the win. Should have just help back and tried to play a longer game.
G2 was mostly uneventful I forget how I won it.
G3 was down to me on super low life again but it was my turn to top-deck: the Exquisite Archangel! I was free to swing out and ignore my own low life for the win.

Match 3 v WG aggro

So this is that one guy who takes 100 years to play. He wasn't too bad tonight but he plays...suboptimally I guess you could put it? He doesn't play decks like you'd expect so sometimes you find yourself losing to silly things, like giving a servo Larger than Life on turn 3 just to smash in for 5 damage. He is also the guy who didn't snatch up the Wispweaver Angel so...I dunno. He's new-ish (though he's been playing over a year by now so does he still have the excuse? I dunno really.) In any case his deck was full of pump spells and low end creatures. Oh and Ridgeback Tusker, which may as well be a mythic. Oh and an actual Mythic, Ajani.
So his deck was actually seemingly really well constructed despite some subpar choices. Load up the board with low-midrange creatures then drop a Tusker, or stall and win with Ajani. Oh and to add to the annoyance, he also played Authority of the Consuls to stall even further.
G1 I was able to smash in a bunch real early with fliers but then he started playing his own so I couldn't profitably swing in anymore. Then he surprised me with Ajani. I tried o kill him in one go with my larger boardstate but it wasn't enough and then I flooded out drawing 5 Islands(!!!) in a row while he just sat back plussing and minussing Ajani.
G2 He kept a 1-lander with Authority so....free win I guess? G3 he aggro'd me way down to 6 as I gained him life just by playing creatures. Totals were 28-6 at one point. I dropped a Revoke Privileges on his Tusker only for him to drop Felidar Guardian and completely blow me out, removing my removal and re-buffing his whole board. Thankfully he opted to trade a bunch while I kept drawing creatures. I slowly slowly clawed my way back through card advantage, drawing cards with Merchant's Dockhand, and then ultimately playing enough lands to do silly things like return Wispweaver to my hand each time he tried to tap it down with that artifact tapper and blinking Cloudblazer with it. At one point he made me nearly shit my pants by saying 'Man, where's my Fumigate?!' but he was kidding.
Eventually I overwhelmed him to my first (and only) 3-0 of the format!

All-stars: Nearly every card in this deck. Honestly I don't think any card was underwhelming at any point in time. Aside from Skywhaler's shot which I simply never drew in any of my games, ever.

HOI4 is a really nice game, but the AI is god awful. Almost every AI aspect is broken in some way, from division numbers for Germany (fielding over 400 when the war breaks out???) to stuffing 20000 planes in one region (that's been patched I've heard) to ignoring a concentrated breakthrough spearhead all the way to Moscow. Going to have to wait a year for Paradox to patch it to a good state. That and a lot of game mechanics are not explained well with no way of figuring out how they work (such as naval combat, it seems no one knows what composition you should have). It's shaping up to be a fantastic game, the mechanics are there, but the AI is going to have to be even better than EUIV for it to work.

The biggest problem I had with HOI4 was that every game with every nation felt almost exactly the same. You build up for a while, sometimes with some flavor events if you're a big nation, and then you fight in the standard blocs and you win or lose based on how good your buildup was. Strategical diversity with the battleplan system was really low, same goes for unit variety. And then there was naval combat/invasions...
But on the other hand I only played it just after it came out, so maybe they improved it.

Yeah, I bought it about a few months after it came out (Christmas sale) because I read the early reviews. The game is improving every patch, as with all Paradox games, but it still has a way to go.

You thought every nation felt the same? You have to roleplay a bit to get the most fun out of the game, like Communist US turning all of the Americas into puppets, or Italy trying to reform the Roman Empire by expanding into Anatolia. It's a bit like playing CKII in that regard.

Try out the Kaiserreich mod, it's already fantastic and only get better.

I'm curious as to how between his Authority and a board buffed twice by Ridgescale Tusker (and you at 6 life) he ended up trading and not gobbling up whatever blockers you had available, Wave.
Re: Cogwork Automaton, he can simply sit back and copy your Treasure Keeper to block when you attack (works better with a Skygate or something to block your own Keeper without anything dying), or do it EoT, then again during his turn and attack with both. At worst he makes you chump or you take 3 damage... but if he doesn't have anything to handle your armada of flyers I guess it's too slow to be affordable.

None of my draft games lasted long enough to really use him or something like Aegis Automaton though, was yours that slow? Your deck looks like it can win pretty fast once it's got 2-3 flyers out and you just play Spire Patrol/pacifism to stop a race/get rid of blockers.
Cant take LMS hipsters serious.

A) double/triple blocking is a thing. For whatever reason those 2 for 1 trades were acceptable to him? He never had a ton of creatures on board to buff.

B) by the time cogwork could start doing work I was able to exile it all, but yes, flying pressure is a thing

C) aegis automaton fits perfectly into the plan. Its not an aggro deck. I clog up the ground with walls, get a bunch of artifacts on the board, and put pressure on in the air. If they can't deal with the pressure I win. If they can, I have the long game through card advantage generated by some of the combos I listed. Plenty of games went long enough to use it, but obviously it depends on what my opponent was on.

The problem is with naval combat is the abstraction. Naval combat is essentially completely random. You can have the exact same setup or very close to it, and one time you might sink a carrier and 6 heavy cruisers at almost no losses, and the other time you might lose 6 heavy cruisers and kill 0 capital ships. I had that exact scenario happen, first outcome let me challenge the British dominance of the Atlantic and basically have control of every sea lane short of the channel, 2nd outcome screwed me until like 1944 when I had all of Europe and Asia under me because the remnants of my fleet got pummeled into oblivion. It doesn't really feel like you're controlling your units at all, stuff just sort of happens and you passively watch it. Which is okay if the underlying system is good (as in Victoria 2), but when it feels completely arbitrary it's just not a good feeling.

I suppose on the bright side, as soon as I took the Suez canal the ports flipped to being on the Red Sea side, so I get my resources again. Here's a screenshot of Coprosperity sphere Japan for anyone who cares:

+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

As for all nations feeling the same... ehh, I think they do an okay job. Axis vs Allies feels very different, you're starved on resources as an Axis member until you conquer the Soviet Union. Although you can just trade in peace time so who cares. The US and the Soviets feel pretty differentiated to me. Problem is once you start conquering a lot, everything starts merging into general sameness. I guess Japan has kamikazee and those super long range torpedoes, and the lack of resources means you have very few tanks the first 5 or so years.

They really need to fix 2 fundamental AI issues. 1. The AI doesn't understand attrition and packs fronts, making them nearly useless as allies. 2. The AI doesn't have a clue how to execute naval invasions in the Pacific or how to upgrade ships. So the US just enters the war and kind of sits there, maybe helps a bit in Europe/Africa but not a whole lot in the Pacific. I suppose all those islands except the Dutch East Indies and Singapore/Johore are pretty useless so it doesn't really matter much, but it just feels really weird how little occurs in the Pacific because of how bad the AI is.

Ooooooh shiz. Did you read Side Jobs too? That has most of the short stories, the rest are scattered in other multi-author books and I can't find a couple, but the ones in Side Jobs are pretty good. There's also a comic series - there are comic versions of some of the books, but also a couple independent stories that are quite good.

What do you think of the series so far?

Side Jobs was my last read. I read the intro comic before starting the series, about a zoo or something. And I think I read a comic version of the first story? Been almost a year now for those.

I definitely enjoyed the series. Characters are very likeable, interesting ideas, plot formula is standard but as Day9 likes to wax poetic on, it's necessary and done well. Very accessible and enjoyable.

Also, watching day9 interact with purge as he tries to learn dota 2 is both enlightening and funny.
