I took the first flight I could to where he is located, on no sleep. Been a long 2 days, and I'm flying back home tomorrow. I have to collect a bunch of documents at his house later in the week and send them off to where he's at (he was visiting my sister- which fortunately for him, has a hospital nearby that is one of the best in neuroscience). It was rather fortunate where and when he had his stroke, because there are a lot of secondary issues that would have meant he would have been taken care a lot more slowly (probably 4-8 hours or more), by a less well equipped hospital. It was also partly triggered by him being irresponsible and not taking his stupid blood pressure pills for months on end (years?). That's my dad though... which is "funny" because he bugs me about stuff that is orders of magnitude less important than this as if the sky will fall. He also had a road rage incident the day of that might have helped trigger it. I'm going to go to bed though, I'm exhausted. | ||

But it still dazzles me, that throughout 10+ years playing online games i've met 1 single girl, that i actually considered skilled. The rest of the girls i've encountered played for funsies, or were failing try harders. | ||

Said friend grasped LoL and improved at it way faster than me (and than the norm I've seen, before level 20 she was already above most fresh-30 and low silver players in every area but mechanics and willingness to play aggressive), however she didn't have the dedication to become good or even improve in general, no drive, so she plateau'd early and lost most of it after she took a break. Playing's a social thing to her though, even coop for the win of the day she wouldn't do without friends to invite, so there's no way she'd tryhard unless you'd provide her with 4 friends of hers, both decent at the game and able to tryhard while having fun. | ||

OMG Dominions 4 is out? How long does a multiplayer game take on average? Let's say a small map. I've met a girl who was decent at Tetris, but I didn't like that so I trained to get better and destroy her. I then told her to stop wasting her time with garbage like me and to actually play in the competitive season. Several months later I'm not even close to her level. Goddamn. I also a know a couple who play fighting games that are around my level. The problem is not really that girls suck at games, but that there are so few of them so that while the ratio of good players to bad players is the same it's even more magnified when the male to female ratio is like 50:1. If just a third of that would be good, that's about 16 good guy players and ... 1/3 of a girl, lol. | ||

I've looked at some alternatives for MoO2 and D4 seems awesome o.o The beta is out for those of us who pre-ordered to help with the bugtesting and general balancing concerns (for instance, the effectiveness/rate of hunting for blood virgins to sacrifice to infernal powers with new unrest mechanics, how OP 2-province Sailing is [nerf pls], etc.). You can order now on Desura if you wanted to try the Beta, but the manual/tutorial isn't out yet, and there are bugs to be hunted. As for a multiplayer game, regular games take some time. Multiplayer is usually done PBEM (Play by Email) so a single turn is usually every 12-24 hours, with midgame turns taking ~48 hours (late game turns at times reached 72h a turn, but late game and especially the micro is significantly less daunting with the new version). These are games with, generally, 12-16 players, mind. If it's a small map with a small group of players (say, 2-6), we're talking about what's likely a blitz game (and usually organized via IRC), where turns are submitted every 5-10 minutes, for several hours. Never played a blitz game, but people do and they can be fairly short. Solo Play is also an option, and there have been several major improvements to the AI (notably barring them from purchasing shit units, somewhat sane pretender/scales choices, etc.), though when you've gotten experience, the AI hordes are merely chaff before the wind, even with 300% resource gain (same as your regular 4X, though). Again, time commitment for multiplayer Dominions 4 is generally fairly relaxed, given turns, even with endgame grind, was at most 30 minutes per turn (with a large empire; large blood economies, and LA Ermor/R'lyeh/Ulm and Carrion Woods Pangaea took longer due to extra micro from freespawn [again, note this is for Dom3, while micro for Dom4 has been significantly reduced due to several UI/other interface improvements]), while early on you can take 1-10 minutes at most per game (minus diplomacy, which, depending on pre-game agreement, ranges from Formal Treaties to Diplomacy-level diplomacy). You can generally juggle several games at once, without a large time commitment, though it's over the course of a month or more. The official release date is now scheduled to be September 28th. I'll probably set up a thread in the Sports&Games section of TL and probably put up a LP for the game. Still need help to decide which nation/mythology to play (input suggestions of mythologies you're interested in!), but currently leaning towards Irish Sidhe/Tuatha for gameplay/LP purposes. It may be a few days until the community ends up converting pre-existing Dom3 multi/blitz servers for Dom4 use, and a few weeks before major mods start floating about (Dom4 is eminently moddable with just Notepad and maybe Paint, if you wanted to dabble). | ||
